A small safety tip scott: the company I work for recently introduced hydrogen detection tape. You can put it around your fittings and if there's a gas leak it will discolor so it's a great additional safety feature that's quick and easy to set up.

From South Africa... ever consider a Trangia? I'm cognizant of your space costraint but having an alternative fueled heat source is worth the consideration. Trangia run on de natured spirits, are cheap to run, fuel is available everywhere and the stove will never let you down, no matter the temp or weather conditions. In my landrover discovery II budget self done stealth and off grid camper, its invaluable and very useful as heat source, and tide me over when my propane says to here and no more.
@StaticCamperVan
@StaticCamperVan 2 года назад
@Warren De jager I’ve owned a Trangia for about twenty years. It’s a nice backup stove. But it’s not a stove I enjoy using. Because of space issues, I’ve found it best to stick with propane as that’s the fuel my heater runs on. It simplifies everything by using one fuel source.

@@Russellbeta A bit late but I found this...Butane, either of two colourless, odourless, gaseous hydrocarbons (compounds of carbon and hydrogen), members of the series of paraffinic hydrocarbons. Their chemical formula is C4H10

Butane is more expensive if you buy the canisters online or at many sportsman stores. I buy mine at oriental stores where you can get 4 canisters for 5 dollars.

Thanks for sharing your research results. I really liked the shutoff valve idea, safe at all levels. Also with propane you should add a filter inline. I learned that lesson with my gas Mr. Buddy heater.
@winstonsmiths2449
@winstonsmiths2449 Год назад
Many gas hoses are made flexible by adding oils to the plastic. The oils will leach out and clog up regulators, the burners. I have a buddy heater and bought a house that was not manufactured using oils. I also use a trap (filter) on other hoses. It catches the oils that leach out, but they call it a filter, not trap.
@pavel9652

I would never suspect that! Someone mentioned filter and I was curious what sort of contaminants are in the gas?

I learned a long time ago to pay close attention when you see the word "proprietary" I mean it's all good that they want you to buy it from them, therefore securing future revenue, until the company goes out of business and... I kinda like the footprint of the new stove, it's a cleaner look if that makes sense. Glad to see that you are still alive and kicking, and hopefully doing well ATB!
@StaticCamperVan

Fair point about proprietary products. When I bought the first Gas One stove, I figured that I could use butane if something happened to the propane regulator. Then I found out butane doesn’t work well in cold temperatures. Just my luck. Haha.

A few weeks back I noticed your gaz one and was curious about it... In my van I have a butane stove from Iwatani its the size and looked that I found appealing. While traveling in the US this winter, I did however noticed they are a little harder to find. I live in ram promaster so I store a propane 2 burner under the bed. My go to for finding butane almost anywhere in the Us was Asian markets. And they are so much cheaper then REI or Cabellas... There was another reason why I bought the Iwatani this amazing Japanese cook was using it in his vlogs and there isn’t anything this guy could not cook. Thanks for all the in-depth Info!

I took a $25 Coleman camping stove (the single burner model that attaches directly to the 1 lb propane bottle) and drilled a 4 inch hole with a hole saw into my counter and just dropped the stove into that put a couple of screws to hold it into place. Never had an issue. I just open my cupboard to turn on and off the propane valve on the under side of the stove.

Thank you, Scott, for sharing your research. An issue operators of these stoves need to know is if you modify the valves, fittings or the hose on the stoves those modifications void any warranty on the stove itself AND, more importantly, if there should be a fire or injuries caused by the stove, legally the company may not be held liable for any injuries or damages due to the modifications.

Always use a lighter to light any stove. Your fuel lasts a lot longer because you are not wasting it while turning all the way to the clicker. My butane lasts about thirty-percent longer. I love my butane version, but I also had a scary situation this month. I turned the knob off and disengaged the bottle. I always disengage the bottle, because I have found mine leaking butane before. I was just doing a few things in camp and went to move move stove. It was STILL hot. Looking closer, the flame was really low and the stove was actually still on with the knob off and the can "disengaged." I found you CANNOT trust the disengage lever to disengage the bottle every time. This could have been a massive disaster. Now I disengage with the lever AND also verify the can disengaged AND visually verify the flame is out.

I wonder if you ever do van tours. I follow people on RU-vid but I do not have a RU-vid channel so I’m not looking for personal fame. whoa, i'm heating coffee water in my van on that exact same gas one dual fuel stove right now. i did just like you- had a gas one stove but saw this small one and bought it to take up less space. i loved it so much i bought another just like it. i keep one inside the van to make coffee and cook on when it's cold out or too windy- i use a butane can for that, so i have no need for a hose inside the van- the butane can is neat and simple and takes up no space on the table. i set up the other one outside on a one gallon propane tank to cook messy stuff like popcorn, and to bake on with my omnia oven, etc. options! 😀 plus, i figured too that by having two, if one stove broke i have a backup- because life without hot coffee is NOT an option. i love this setup. so small that two burners now store in the same space i had been storing one. i have had them well over a year without issue. the chrome looking burner grate cleans way easier than the other gas one burners i've had, and they still look good, which was a problem i had with my last gas one burner- impossible to clean. so apparently i got lucky with the quality, since you demonstrate that it's not always up to par. good thing i have two, so that if i develop problems with the hose i have a spare. i wonder exactly what the problem is you were having with the hose? i have been leaving mine hooked up to the propane tank outside without issue- until recently. i've been thinking maybe i have a bad batch of propane, because the flame is sort of not really sputtering, but making puffing noises like it is. sorta like the wind is hitting it when it isn't... huh. anyway, coffee time! have a great day!

The popular buddy heaters have an issue when using the adapter hose. There is a filter that is supposed to solve the issue. Propane make something leach out of the hose and the filter catches that. I suspect something similar has happened to your gas one stove. The filter that I mentioned won’t work for your application, and I suspect gas one doesn’t sell one. A good disassembly and cleaning will probably get the gas one stove working again. While space is precious in the van, keeping 2 stoves might be a better option if fuel availability is the bigger issue. This video has great information, thank you. 👍😎 I already have two stoves to cover both fuels, so I probably won’t be getting the gas one stove. But it’s good to know about and it’s limitations should the need arise.

My Gas One is operating fine after a few years. I, like you, don’t have much room in my van, so the stove gets stored away after each use. I guess that’s a good thing because I disconnect the propane each time. Question for you: How long does a 1lb green propane bottle last you? I hear people complaining about always having to buy more propane. One 1lb propane bottle lasts me about a month. That is coffee every morning and oatmeal about every other day, then usually dinner a few nights a week. I carry 3 bottles in my van.
@StaticCamperVan

Great to hear. I don’t want to give the impression that Gas One stoves aren’t great quality. You’re proving that if the stoves are used correctly, they will last for years. I can get as long as six days out of a 1lb propane bottle. But usually get much less. With this new stove, I am back to using my 2 1/2 gallon refillable propane tank. With bulk propane sold for about $3 a gallon and the 1lb green bottles $4 a piece in this area, I’m happy to not have to buy the little bottles anymore.

I have many health benefits of the carnivore way of eating. As a nomad, it sure cuts down on cooking, only needing to brown the surface of the meat, mainly beef and lamb. I eat med rare. Very fast prep and easy clean up. Get grassfed/finished. You save by not needing anything else but salt.

You probably talked about this before, how and where do you store your propane safely. I have it just inside underneath my bed. Never had any problems but sometimes think I should change the way I store it. Whats your view on this? Thanks agian
@StaticCamperVan
@StaticCamperVan 4 года назад
I have my propane under my bed as well. I keep it right next to my floor vent. Propane is heavier than air. My idea is any leaks with fall down through the floor vent. It’s one of the many reasons why I have a floor vent and never close it. I’ve never had any trouble with propane. But I have experienced several butane canisters leaking in hot weather. My personal opinion is that propane is generally safe. We just need to keep an eye on the hoses because they do wear out. Propane hoses are the weak point and should be replaced regularly.

I would have to agree with the other commentors that suggested using a filter. I discovered this issue when I started using Mr Buddy propane heaters. They even make a hose that doesn't leach oil for their heaters because the oil will clog the burner.

My camper has two burners, an oven And a grill. In the four years of going on extended trips plus some short trips, I've used the oven twice, the grill once and the two rings/burners together probably a dozen times and all used mainly for the First two years, the last two years I've been using one ring. My last trip I didn't even get the 7kg bottle replaced as the old one was empty, I used a little single burner camping butane stove and it did just fine. Even at home I usually get away with using one ring/burner but the air fryer is also handy. You can get foldaway/pack away oven that sit on top of a single burner then stow away easily, Coleman Packaway Oven (amazon) seems Good to me for cooking a pie, sausage rolls and/or pizza etc the odd time. I've recently purchased a tiny foldup caravan 9'x5' and I'm taking out the cooker and gas bottles to replace with a one burner and I'll probably purchase the above mentioned oven as I too want more space on my little worktop. Space is premium in small spaces 👍

I recently purchased a Coleman single burner butane stove for my minivan. I was tossed between a two-burner or single but could not justify whether or not or how often I would use two burners at one time, except for when I make posta, that would prob be the only time I need two.. for the sauce and posta. I went with a single burner. But I'm glad I learned about the points you made in this video. But, I did stock up on butane and propane because back in mid-March, stores were depleted of both gas bottles. So I keep a stock pile in my minivan, but I wonder and worry if they are safe in a hot van. Anway. thanks for your video, enjoyed it.

Butane was almost impossible to find in my area during the lockdown. But, propane was plentiful. I’ve had several butane canisters leak gas in hot temperatures. Now, I never keep butane in my van in the summer. There’s a trick for cooking pasta. I did a video about it a long time ago. Put the pasta in a wide skillet and cover with Cold water by about a half inch. Bring it to a boil then turn down to a simmer. When the pasta is cooked, almost all the water will be absorbed. I never boil pasta in a large pot anymore.

What I do if I’m using commercial/canned pasta sauce is after I dump the water is I just add the sauce to the pasta (which heats it up well enough for my liking, anyway). It’s already pre-cooked, and generally they are “heat and serve”. I like that tip about using a wider skillet to avoid the issue of having to dump boiling water, thanks!

Years back our propane lanterns in hunt camp started running crappy. Same with the rv stove. They were plugging. Sometimes in those propane tanks, including the refillable rv sized you get a wax type substance in with your propane. Royal bitch to clear. Just an FYI. Oh, that GasOne that wouldn't burn all around, partial plug. If it were actually flowing those non-burning ports would have burnt. I use the BBQ size bottle (20 lb.) and buy propane for $3.99 per gallon. I have an old 2 burner Coleman Stove that worked with white gas but I use it with an adapter for propane. I also have a single burner propane stove that still works great that I have had for 50 years. On your stove that was not putting out flame on one side I would recommend blowing out the burner head from the out side with compressed air. If it was putting out propane from the dead side a lighter would show it up and burn it.

You won’t have any issues. This stove is a good combination of quality and price. The only reason I had an issue was from using a bulk propane tank which the included propane regulator was wasn’t designed to handle. I wasn’t sure if it’s OK to copy and paste, or to include a link here. Please advise.
