The reason butane stoves can be considered “better” is because many “camping stoves” burn too hot and don’t have a decent low control. I have this stove and it allows the same low controlled cooking with propane! I believe it is the ultimate stove I have used it for over a year trouble free

I love my Gas One Butane/Propane Stove. When I got my van I wanted something that had a stable base, and didn't have an arm sticking out, so did a lot of researching first and decided on this. I've used this with butane mostly, but I have a one gallon propane bottle to use when I run out of the butane cans I have in stock. My plan is to have a butane bottle or a green bottle as back up to use when the propane runs out (until I get it refilled). It's quick and easy to use. I save gas by putting a shield around my pan, so the pan gets more direct heat, I save on fuel that way (more direct heat). I'll be keeping my 1-gallon propane bottle inside as well, but because I move a lot I'll have to be sure to burn off the propane in the line before I drive anywhere, or pack my stove away. I have had problems with the butane cans in cold weather, if I know its going to be bitter cold, I'll sleep with the butane can. Of course, they all have their individual issues in cold weather. All in all, I like having the choices too, and a stable, light-weight stove that works very well.

Thanks for sharing. This is exactly what I am planning to do. To have a small propane tank, maybe one of the refillable 1 pound propane as well, and I'll buy a set of those butane canisters as well just as a temporary backup in case I run out of the propane.

These small stoves are great many brands make identical items in every way One small can of butaingas lasts me 6-7 days for 2 meals a day and 3-4 coffees per day. To acheive this I always keep the gas low and only boil enough water for one coffee at a time. In Asia most people and market traders use this type of stove. They truly are simple and amazing the design can never be bettered and has been around for many years. The paint work always chips easy and flakes off with use but at the end of the day it's a great tool and not bought for its looks. When buying gas in bulk keep to the well known top brands there is many very cheap brands but they always tend to have several faulty tins in each batch. These stoves can be purchased very cheap indeed on Amazon, shop around for a bargain does not matter the brands are the same but the adaptor pipe is an extra. I've used this stove daily for over 3 years.

Bought my Matilda about 6 weeks ago !!! I can remember watching you a couple of years back... and Now I've finally Done It !!! My van is a Mercedes Sprinter 170 wheelbase 1998. Already self converted but I'm changing a few things. Matilda has a full cooker and gas run fridge but for me personally I didn't feel happy with a large bottle, so have decided on this one you're showing. I'll use my oven for storage lol !!! I know I know everyone says the big gas bottles are fine but for me i just didn't feel relaxed with it. Also I'm really not going to be cooking a 6 course dinner, so one ring is fine for me. Might buy 2 just incase the odd time need 2 pans going at the same time. Thanks to YOU, i have my Matilda and when everyone was saying my ideas were stupid, YOU MADE IT SEEM POSSIBLE!!!! Thank You !!! Blessings Mimi

@CheapRVliving
@CheapRVliving 7 лет назад
Is the fire ring smaller or just the case?
@gloshafer5205
@gloshafer5205 7 лет назад
CheapRVliving - I believe the difference is the size of the case. The mini stove dimensions are 9.6 X 8 X 3.9. The fire ring is 2.5 in. The pan supports look a little smaller, they are just under 6.5 X 6.5 from corner to corner. A reviewer commented that the largest pan it would hold is 8.5 inches. I'm solo so my pot and skillet are only about 6 inches. The item is available on Amazon.

Butane bottles are half the size of the green pounders, but contain more than half the heat because butane contains more BTU per ounce rendering the price difference insignificant. A standard grill tank left indoors blew up a two story home when I was a firefighter.

Propane tanks are painted silver/white/off white for a reason, so the tank doesn't heat up from the sun. I know someone who didn't like the white 20lb tank for his grill, so he matched it and painted it black. All was good, until it ran out, and he went to fill it at a propane pump station. The filler refused to fill it.

The wide availability of propane makes it a superior fuel for most people on the road. The fact that you can strap a large tank of it to your vehicle is a massive bonus.

It is. For some people, especially car campers the severe lack of space is what makes butane the more attractive option.

Thanks Bob for everything you do. You have a special channel that I love to watch almost every day. I have built my van based on all your videos and other RU-vid videos. The only problem I have with a dual purpose stove is that once you adapt the propane bottle there is no safety mechanism to stop the propane from leaking if the on/ off Nob is slightly moved by accident. Where when you have the butane bottle installed the safety mechanism is built in. Thanks for everything you do

Nice find there with the dual fuel stove model. This is also an excellent stove for emergencies to keep on hand. 2$ a gallon for propane is an amazing price, it is generally about as costly as gasoline or a bit lower, but gas is quite low these days, at least for awhile, but expect that to go up again. At 4 pounds per gallon that's about 50 cents per pound. At $1.50 for an 8oz butane bottle that's about $3 per pound. So there's a 6:1 ratio in cost, but comparing bulk to bottled is a bit of a stretch. With prefilled propane green bottles the ratio is only about 2:1 but of course prices do vary a lot, as does availability as Bob points out. Dual fuel is a useful option (if you can keep track of that separate adapter hose). Propane vaporizes at a much higher pressure, so the green bottles are made from much thicker steel and as such are a much larger contributor of metal waste than the thin, light, lower pressure butane bottles. Both bottles are made of metal which can be recycled. The green bottles can be refilled, however they use a low quality valve that often leaks after refilling (sometimes even before refilling), and Federal rules prohibit transporting refilled one-use propane bottles over state lines. One thing that is very nice about these cartridge style stoves is the lever that disengages the bottle completely when the stove is turned off. So the butane bottle is backed away from the stove inlet and disconnected, controlled by the lever and knob. The lever pushes the canister into the stove, and the knob ejects it when turned to off. There's no screwing on and off and need for expensive propane adapters and hoses. Valves in propane stoves sometimes leak a little, and it is harder to remove the green bottle every time you turn it off, so it can slowly leak down. Another nice feature of the butane canister stove is the excellent flame control. Most propane stoves have very poor adjustments on the flame. The old Coleman stoves were very good, but the new ones (and most other brands) are poor due to the cheap valves they use. The valve is basically on-off and it is difficult to get a low or medium flame. The cartridge butane stoves generally have a large knob with excellent flame control over a longer rotation. For heating water it doesn't matter but for regulating temperature in a pan the control is important. For outdoor use most butane stoves have a very soft low-pressure flame that is blown by the wind. Propane stoves generally have higher pressure flames that are not blown around so easily and are better suited for outdoor use. This is dependent on the stove, rather than the fuel, but in general propane types work much better in a breezy environment. Propane bulk bottles are nice, though there is often a minimum refill fee so refilling bottles smaller than 20 pounds is often not as cheap per pound - you may have to pay for more propane than the bottle will hold due to the minimum fee. Bulk propane bottles are date stamped and need to be re-certified periodically or replaced, so there is ongoing cost there. Fluid ounces and weight ounces are not the same for these fuels (they are less dense than water by about half), so use ounces weight, not fluid ounces which is a volume measurement.

I didn't know they were dated. Silver lining is was going to get a bunch on rebate but was a limited. Smaller propane places quit refilling portable bottles due to regs/expensive remodeling. Some places that refill bottles charge about triple price vs the 150-200 gal min home delivery. I spoke with Pennsylvania oil company and they fill for same costs as bulk, but that area has way higher LP price than where I live. So great to share info. Mark Twain, "why can't countries share technologies". I am a follower of The Venus Project but in my version I feel a smaller/easier new infrastructure change(they say takes only ten years) would be to develop for just the youth(free education for ALL), and free the old to live as they please knowing they will be leaving kids and gran-k with a future. Could you imagine a educated healthy new generation with the tech we (will)have...? Actually compared to the inefficiencies we are slaves to it is hard to imagine where we could be in VERY short order. We need truth, and the sound of silence. Silence because the adjustment would be soo ....different, and the adjustor even more capable.

I'm a little late to the party, but just bought a Gas One 8,000 BTU dual fuel unit, for the most part because I read a lot of reviews, and this one was the clincher. Thanks Bob, you did a great job. Not only that, but I also watched numerous other of your videos and want to now buy one of those inflatable solar camp lights. One thing to know: 1 gallon generally is 128 ounces. The 4 butane cans total 32 ounces, so 8 cans would only be half a gallon. You'd have to actually buy FOUR (4) of the 4-packs, not two. That would be 16 cans, not eight. This is 2020, and I bought the 4-pack from Amazon for $14 (about $3.50/8oz can), not including tax. I would need 16 cans to make 1 gallon. That would be $56/gallon!!!!!! Just so people know. The GasOne 50140 converter hose (4-feet) is $16.50 on Amazon, and connects the portable stove to a 1-to-20lb propane tank.

I first got one of these stoves back in around 96'. I drove truck for 30 years and I found it at a T/A truckstop. It was made by a company called Burton. Loved it. I have two Gas One stoves right now. I retired from trucking, and work part-time as a security guard. I take one to work with me for coffee and food. Works great. I also take them camping with me. The only problem with Butane is if it gets real cold, below 32°, then it won't work. But I think they are great myself.

That confirms it! It would work for me initially with the ability to upgrade in a different set up!

Helpful video Mr Bob! I like to cook for free with wood on a camping stove. I do have a propane stove for backup.

Safety Regulations are written in Blood. If it leaked while you were sleeping, you wouldn't wake up. You want your van to be air tight during the winter to keep the heat in. I hope you're cracking a window open when you're cooking. Having a tank bracket on the back of a van would be a pain in the gluteus maximus. Just be safe Bob and keep the videos coming.

A 27' sailboat blew up in Annapolis in May 2018. The live-aboard sailor was awakened by fire from a 20 gal propane tank in the cabin with a heater attached at the head. The sailor escaped while the boat was completely destroyed. He thought, being very experienced and capable, that he could manage the risk of propane storage inside his cabin.

I had one of the butane stoves before someone stole it out of my Van. Worked pretty well. Some notes to make if I may. 1) Most Asian grocery stores sell the butane bottles, prices are usually pretty good. 2) Some of the burners are painted, some are polished metal. If you buy a polished one usually no problem. If you buy a painted one you may get a weird odor first couple of times as chemicals in paint bake off. Might want to fire it up outside and run it for a bit to burn off any fumes. 3) My stove had the curved bottle cover that stuck up on side. You were limited to about a 7 inch diameter pot or skillet in order to limit the amount of heat reaching bottle. The Gasone stove seems to be flush on top which may allow a larger diameter pan to be used.

Thanks for the info. I've been using, and love, the Gasone GS-800 mini butane stove for over a year now. But it's butane-only. Thanks to your video I was curious to see if the Mini had a dual fuel version and lo and behold, they do. Happy days!

Hi there great video , I live in the UK and believe me when I say ours is twice the price of yours. The can you show has a disadvantage of the amount of gas left in the can , The can lasts about 23 minutes and the can will still have about a quarter of gas left in it that can't be used , to me thats a design fault so every four cans you buy you are throwing one away, ive been using them for 16 months and its my biggest gripe.

Iwatani stove have a feature called "heat transfer panel".... to transfer some of the heat from the stove flame to keep the butane can warm, so that you will use up all of the butane gas in the can....interesting design... Look it up.... 👍😊

I just ordered one of these gas one stoves after watching your video thanks should be getting it in a day or two. I will be living in a dodge grand caravan. I will use a 5lb (1 gallon) mini tank in the van and use that for the bulk of my cooking. Will only use butane or the 1lb green bottles for convenience on occasion. Thanks for the good review!

I love watching your videos, you are so real!! What instructions???? LOL I want to buy one of those models also, the one I have now is a single burner that screws onto the top of a green bottle, making it very high and easy to tip over - it's got to go.

Most people that start out with stoves like yours find that to be true Janice.
