Follow the former Northern Pacific main line across Western Montana, now MRL's route toward Sandpoint, ID. We'll follow the 10th Sub west of Missoula, over Evaro Hill and on to Paradise, where we'll head back east for a bit along the Clark Fork River. We'll return to Paradise and continue west to Thompson Falls. MRL's popular Gas Local will be seen sporting the Veteran's Unit, and BNSF overhead trains make regular appearances.
MRL announced in January, 2022 that it would be terminating its lease of the former Northern Pacific line across Montana, giving BNSF full control of the line well before the 2047 expiration date. While the STB has yet to rule on this matter, the odds are in favor of a BNSF takeover, ending a 35 year run of one of America's favorite regional railroads.
