Canadian National's former Wisconsin Central route in southeastern Wisconsin is a relatively level grade, with the exception of a short six mile stretch south of Fond du Lac. Known as 'Byron Hill', this one percent grade puts heavy southbounds on a crawl and many trains require helpers to get over the hill. After an attempt to visit this area in 2016, I returned in 2023 in hope of seeing more interesting locomotives and experience better weather. Fortunately, both goals were met on this trip, with a slight exception being a hazy morning due to fires north of the boarder in Canada.
