BEYOND MEAT burger vs. REAL burger: Worth It? 

Sorry! I mistakenly read the ingredients as beef extract but it's BEET extract. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My husband had a heart attack when he was 60. His doctor told him not to eat meat - also cheese, butter, mayonnaise... Everything my husband felt he couldn't live without. Well, he decided that he wouldn't live if he continued to eat like he used to. For 15 years now, he is a vegetarian, going on vegan. His checkups show no blockages in his heart. This is why Beyond Meat exists for him.

I tried Beyond meat today. It is beyond exceptional. It tastes like meat. I am stunned.

I buy beyond meat burgers for $5.80 for two at my local grocery store. The beyond meat sausages are good as well.

Hi Flo, I’m a fan of beyond meat burger at A&W. We have tried cooking it at home. The first time we cooked the beyond meat patties at the recommended time, it felt like we were eating raw meat, but the second time we cooked them twice the recommended time. It tasted a lot like meat! I do agreed for the price of two patties, you might as well go to A&W and skip all the works and mess. Also, I always enjoy your guest tasters😄 They seem to be very mature and intelligent.💜

I just tried BM patty for the first time. Overall a positive experience with good substitute texture and a surprising char grilled undertaste similar to a BK (burger king) burger. The fattines of beef is missing but I applied a buttery toasted bun which helped bridge the gap.

Curious, since most beef patties are around 80%, would the size/weight comparison change due to the 20% fat being cooked out of the beef burger? Maybe they’re equivalent as end product.

Great review and comparison. Thank you! I was just talking about these with a friend who’s a vegetarian a couple of days ago. She has tried them and rated them “just ok”. I just went to their website and checked out the ingredients as it seemed weird that they would add “beef extract”. It appears to be “beet extract “, not beef (easy mistake, not a criticism ), which gives it the red color and “bleed” while cooking. For years, I have heard the argument from vegans and vegetarians that producing meat, dairy etc. is less efficient and far more costly than a vegetable based diet etc.. To be honest, I could never see that a vegetable based diet was any cheaper and the pricing on this product is most definitely way higher. But I do agree that we would all benefit from eating smaller servings of meat. Just my .02. Thanks again. Your videos are always enjoyable, informative and honest.

Thanks so much for reviewing this. I'm looking forward to trying it once it's more readily available. I've had no problem with the 'veggie patty' burgers sold for years but they're nothing like a real burger. This holds much promise. And as a former vegetarian, a lot of what sent me that direction was unhappiness about how we raise our meat animals and the extreme environmental impact it has. Getting away from animal meat would be a wonderful change. Just having a good option would be great.

Beyond burgers are only $4.99 here for 2 ! I could not see myself spending $9 for 2 unless it was a fully cooked dressed meal. But they are so worth it !!!

I thought this was a great review on this burger. I'll admit I came into this thinking any review Id watch would most likely be biased. Either heavily leaning towards the beyond brand because of its environmental implications or the other direction, heavily leaning towards the traditional burger because of the beyond burgers political implications. But I must say you achieved precisely what I would expect from an impartial judgement. Good work on this one.

From what I can tell, this is an honest opinion that is not influenced by outside forces. I think the time has come that we should give consideration on what influence the cattle industry is making to our planet. There is no ecological reason not to switch to plant based foods. It is true that it is more expensive to purchase plant based burgers but for the cost of your health and the environment it might be better to eat less than save more.

Thx for your efforts with the demo. A lot of folks are hesitant.....remember Soylent Green? On Jan 30, 2020 Denny's restaurants are offering a free Beyond Burger with purchase of any beverage.

You can get used to eating anything. People with high blood pressure have to give up salt and other things and they have learned to tolerate their different diets. I would eat a meat substitute like beyond meat if my doctor instructed me to.

Really interesting video, I think that I have tried most "meat substitutes" over the years, not found one that came close to "real" meat. As Dude quite rightly pointed out, "the price differential" will decrease if the demand increases. I'm somewhat dubious as to whether it'll actually take off, folks will baulk at the price, which will mean the demand won't be big enough to stimulate the growth required to bring down the cost. I just made my first Beyond Burger and had to search "beyond burger review" while it was cooking. After a few bites, its very close to a beef burger! I made two of them. One of the burgers was plain with just bbq sauce, the second was a plain cheeseburger with no toppings. I prepared them like this because thats normally how I have a burger. I'd still choose a beef burger over this for the taste, but if i was trying to cut back on beef i'd have no problems substituting this. 100 percent viable option. It also almost taste like pea's for a second, but very interesting stuff!

Very interesting review! My husband and I gave up beef about 5 yrs ago because it turned out that beef was a trigger for his gout attacks. I gave it up just so he wouldn’t have to watch me eat a nice juicy burger in front of him. So this review was quite helpful for me. Happy Mothers Day Flo. Places like BK Have had veggie burgers for decades just they are harder to find on the menu. My problem with faux meat has always been they are usually made with soy. Just does not seem like a healthy alternative eating something so processed. At least the vegetarian lifestyle is easier now with so many alternatives compared to when I was growing up.

My great-grandfather was Shawnee Native American and as with many native tribes they were carnivores. My grandma ate meat eggs liver chicken Etc she lived to be a 105 years old. My doctor informed me that many of the diabetes cases are due to too much carbohydrate in the diet and they place people on a ketogenic program to reverse type 2 diabetes. So I'm not really convinced that meat is a bad food.

Great review. For me, cost is important. For those who have a choice because cost is not a concern, then it comes down to a conscious decision for other reasons such as health, environment, as you mentioned. Otherwise, beef remains affordable and until the costs come down, it will remain a challenge for "Beyond Meat" to be adopted by the masses. Twice the cost for half the amount impacts a lot of people. Great honest review I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that there would have to be a health reason to switch completely over given the present price disparity. Not that I object to supplementing plant based foods into my diet. I suppose if it’s an ethical choice then it becomes a no brainer and the price is not an issue.

On the A&W website, the Beyond Burger has the same amount of calories as a Teen burger containing bacon and cheese, in addition to the beef patty. Both burgers are the same serving size, around 230 grams, with the Beyond having more fat but less saturated fat, but also more sodium than a Teen Burger. I don't think it's a healthier option but perhaps a more enviro conscious one. If I were to go for fast food, I think it'd choose the Teen Burger. There are other brands of meatless options that are indeed healthier vs real meat.

For the people who watched cows' and pigs' bewildered eyes in fears and the way they are slaughtered in slaughterhouses, the slight difference in taste wouldn't be big of a deal.

It tastes just as good, you're helping the environment, and there's no animal torture, and STILL you prefer the beef burger simply because of money. That's fucking stupid.

Great review Lum Family! I’ve been wanting to try the Beyond Meat burger patty, but was hesitant. For Ella to have chosen plant based over beef, speaks volumes. I will definitely give it a try now. Del Taco is our local fast food taco chain. They recently introduced Beyond Meat tacos. I had one last week, and was pleasantly surprised to find, how close in flavor it was to their regular taco. The texture of the Beyond Meat “taco meat,” was a bit softer-like you’d mentioned, but the flavor was definitely there! Thanks for sharing! Blessings to you and your beautiful family!

The “now meatier” version is superb. My 7 year old won’t eat beef burgers anymore. She only wants this “plant burger”. I do add a little garlic salt and serve it as a burger with all the fixings...tomato, pickle, mustard, etc. on a brioche bun. Superb. I don’t feel the need to eat a beef burger ever again when I have a burger craving.

Nice to see a 3rd member of the family for "the taste", as well :) Since I'm on the Keto diet, I wouldn't change from eating beef...and even if I wasn't, that's quite a difference in price. Almost twice the cost for half the amount...that's significant..like a 4x difference, if my awful math is correct. As Dude said, I would think Beyond Meat will have to lower their prices to be competitive.. I love beef, but I would be curious to try the alternative....Thanks again, and have a great week!

Having tried my first Beyond Meat burger just yesterday, I was very interested in your vlog post today. My experience was similar to yours and Dude’s that the pattie was mushier than a regular burger and didn’t exactly taste right, even though it seemed to be infused with beef flavour. So it’s like the argument of margarine versus butter… the natural one is still better... to me! Once carne, always carne. o_0

BM you get everything, you get protein, fibres, get save animals, you dont get fat, dont get red meat obesity, BM is about better world without having to stop eating what we want.

Great video, you should try the Beyond Burger 2.0. It fixes all of the issues. So much better than the original. Texture, smell, and robustness.

We eat very little red meat, pork. Still eat it though. Moderate amounts is key. I think we eat less than 30 percent now. It will catch up to you eventually.

My husband really likes the beyond burgers. For me, I think that if I"m consciously eating vegetarian, I prefer a black bean burger or the indian style burger from trader joes. If I want beef, I'll eat a beef burger. For me, I looked at the nutrition facts of beyond burgers and I don't feel like it's that much healthier than a regular burger. I might as well enjoy the beef!

First thanks for doing this video and bringing attention to a plant-based option! If you haven't investigated the life of a factory farmed animal.. you may pick the meat. If you have looked at the life of a factory farmed animal then your choice is made. Beyond Meat wins. Beyond Meat is a fantastic, tasty option. I am confident that as time goes on and it becomes mainstream the price will substantially drop. Also, there are sausages available now!! I'm so happy we've finally gotten here. Animals and the environment are rejoicing. ❤️

Haven’t tried Beyond but have tried Qorn products. Not too bad. Still never stands up against the beef though. Also Happy Mother’s day Flo! Your daughter is so precious.

We have had both the Impossible and the Beyond Meat burger for over a year. I haven’t tried the Impossible Burger as It isn’t gluten free which for people with celiac makes it a forbidden fruit. While I find the Beyond Meat products to be good I haven’t been able to make the conversion full time. Maybe when the cost becomes more competitive I will make the conversion but till then I’ll just eat less meat and not substitute plant based meat for the real thing.

The world just hit a new record co2 level. If we can sacrifice a little taste to help the planet that alone is worth the switch. It's not about the health benefits, it's still junk food It's about the planet and slowing down the suffering of animals.

While I'm not a vegan, (as I'm originally from a large farm) in Alberta, I'm curious as to how this tastes. I did see it at Safeway, and I also saw the burger at A&W. The burger was costly at the fast food outlet. Interesting video. Cheers!

I’ve been eating vegan for over 3 years & I find the beyond meat patty to be disgusting! I did have an Impossible Burger at a restaurant in AZ on the Colorado River and that was delicious. Creepily delicious - I asked the waiter 3 times if he was sure it was a vegan patty.

I cooked beyond burgers for dinner last week. I was trying to trick my husband into eating vegetarian burger. He came in the house while I was cooking and said are you feeding the dogs canned dog food . The initial scent was dog foodie . I have to say we both enjoyed the beyond burgers. I will Definitely cook them again but put in a little dales sauce or something else to change the smell.

On a different note, with summer coming up, and with you having access to fruit stands, have you considered doing a jam using the IP?

$9 for two small burgers is too pricey for a family of four. They need to find a way to make the price more reasonable. I've read that the sodium level is high with these burgers. I saw them at Safeway too, but two small patties in a package for $9.00 in my area was a turn off. The ground beef was $3.99 a whole pound. There still remains some question as to how healthy these synthetic burgers really are.

The thing that will make the world think twice about the new generation of meatless burgers won;t be the price or quality. It will be the first massive recall due to listeria contamination, especially with the major companies currently scrambling to keep up with ballooning demand. I can easily see cleanliness in the production lines falling off as pressure to pump out the patties increases and McDonalds jumping on board is only going to create more pressure. Always cook the patties to a safe temperature, despite them being plant based and if you get one in a fast food restaurant which is cool inside, I would recommend that you request a replacement. One thing that wasn't considered is the chances of eating diseased meat/ground up tumors. Here the price for Beyond Burgers is $5.99 for 2 Burgers. Good video though.

The red juice you see when cooking it is beet juice , they add that to give the effect of cooking beef, I too am a meat person but the Burger place we go to {Islands} has the impossible burger , I will order that every other time we go, Great Video

From trying these burgers at the restaruant chain Bareburger, the taste and texture is definitely there for me. Would definitely eat this instead of the veggie burgers i have had in the past. One thing, If the "burger" sits for a little bit like waiting for your kid yo finish eating, the burger starts falling apart and becoming really loose. Once you add the price though it becomes tough to buy this on a regular basis unless you can afford it.

Food is definitely changing and like you I saw the two films you've mentioned and a couple more. I have tried plant based 'meat' which we don't call beyond meat - I'm guessing that Beyond meat is not only a slogan, name but also what became a brand in some countries - and I would pay more for either grass fed beef, Japanese steak ( the real stuff) instead of something like beyond meat. My country has developed plant based 'meat' and is really good. I don't think we export it but rather, we export the technology. Either that or I would not eat meat at all. It puzzles me people who turn into vegetarians, vegans and than spend endless hours to produce something similar to cheese, to meat... If you don't eat meat, ( I have never ever tried pork or anything made from it my entire life as an example) there are thousands of alternatives in terms of ingredients. So if you want meat, eat the best you can afford. My opinion only and I was a vegetarian for 3 years when I worked in India and Nepal. And I love a great vegetarian meal. As much as I enjoy meat, hygene and food safety comes first and there is nothing worst than being sick in a foreign country, away from home. Thank you for the video. Beet extract for red coloring. Beyond has lot of sodium. Has pea , mung beans and coconut oil.

I love, love, love the Beyond The Meat burger for flavour but I would still choose a beef burger but not for the reasons that most others would. I had gastric bypass surgery so I am careful about protein levels, sugar levels, fat content etc. After I have eaten, I have to be quite mindful of how I react to anything new that I've tried because it may or may not be something I can tolerate. Usually, when eating meat protein - I can be satiated and quite happy till the next meal 3-4 hours later. After the BTM burger, I found myself ravenously hungry after barely 2 hours - like a rebound reaction as though I hadn't eaten. I wondered if it's the apple or the pomegranate that did it. I tend to avoid fruit because of the sugar content but I am not completely sure. This has happened each time I have had the BTM burger. (That being said - if I do have one - I plan an extra snack... they are too yummy to avoid.) The price is also a deterrent because I am quite frugal and if a buddy burger for approximately $2 will fill me why pay up for a BTM burger that will leave me hungry so soon after? LOL Heather xo

I have had the Beyond Meat burger at A&W and I have to say I really liked it. To eat less meat, I always do "Meatless Mondays", and sometimes even more days of the week, I don't know if I could ever go Vegan, I consider myself a flexitarian. If I showed up at a party and there was nothing but, Vegan food I wouldn't be complaining. I have to ask you where in the lower mainland were you able to score those Beyond Meat burgers for home? Superstore has a meatless burger (Presidents Choice brand) that’s better than the beyond meat, in my (and my 16 year old daughter’s) opinion. And you get 4 for the same price as the 2 Beyond Burgers. However, we love getting the beyond meat from A&W 😋

Tried one today for lunch and it tastes and looks like a meat Patty! Really impressed. I’m happy to switch. Well impressed. You don’t need oil to cook as it produces enough oil when heated up.

A Porsche will go from point “A” to point “B” but at twice the cost or you can do the same distance in. VW at a faction of the cost. Not very convincing! Since you’re in Canada 🇨🇦, that’s equivalent to selling ice to Inuits!
