This is the key rule boys and girls. Getting good at something and building a life worth living takes time, energy, commitment, and persistent repetition of correct fundamentals. The few years at the start are worth the struggle in order to get the the fun stuff that pays for itself. Best of luck to yall with your endeavours! Edit: for some reason some people got overly sensitive about me saying boys and girls even though it's a common turn of phrase on internet comment sections. If you're getting sad over that then maybe growing a thicker skin should be the first thing you imagine yourself that you could be.
Here’s my favorite takeaway: “You can have whatever ideal you want as long as you are willing to reduce your movement forward to achievable increments.” That means that you can aim at something great and inspiring. However, the path is difficult. Proverbs says that the father rebukes the son that he loves, and that the wise son is grateful for his father’s rebuke. When you are aiming for a great ideal and fall short, especially when you consciously betray that ideal and cave to temptation, your conscience punishes you harshly. When this happens, be grateful for the rebuke, pick yourself up, and learn from it. The harsh rebuke of your conscience will discipline you to stay on the path.
I’ve read 12 Rules for Life: Antidote to Chaos , 12 More Rules: Beyond Order, then Maps for Meaning, took your personality quiz and I’m starting your psychology course and I wanted to say thank you. Self author will be my last destination. I have found out so much about my weaknesses and strengths.
Chaos will always return to your life, no matter how much time has passed. What better way for the world to remind, and remove you from the pursuit of being the best version of yourself. You'll never be able to get bored of being your best self that way.
I've fallen foul of this rule several times and witnessed how much destruction that resentment, deceit and pride rain on your life and the lives of others. This is definitely one to get good at obeying.
We all fall short of the glory, but do not focus on what is, but the start of sin. Immortal and mortal body. When we became mortal our debt is paid when we die. Just obey your heart and think twice when the devil tempts you to become angry against your fellow man. Noone likes prison or " hell" on earth. We all want to be free.
this is not Christian, but theory regarding Chakra stuff --> ACCEPTANCE (RED) is associated with the 1st Chakra Organs of Elimination. its shadow emotions are RESENTMENT and RIGIDITY. i'm using vocabulary author of The 8 Human Talents uses - not sure where she plucked it all from... i appreciate the word choice, and the antonyms thusly...
@@chelebeaqueen maybe not, or maybe so? I'm a believer in one word, one God. Any literature you read was written by the soul. So you want to talk about the 8 symbols of body and energy. When you find yourself in this world, you become only a small part of it. Everything in this world works together to provide for each other.
@@tykyfoster7028 there may very well be scripture which speaks on this directly. alas, i do not know it. i was baptized Congregationalist sometime between K-2 and have always believed Jesus does indeed love all the children of the world, even despite having had doubts during my late teens, specifically... i just happen to know the 'build your own rainbow' of chakra theory. a friend gifted my ex-hubs the book (The 8 Human Talents) and i circumstantially inherited it in our free-for-all his-was-a-proper-narrative divi-ing of 'communal propperty' (🤣🤨) ... the Beatitudes were my favorite Sunday School subject matter. plus the little white church on the hill had a wonderful pastor and wife, and a very friendly congregation that congregated together near and far from church grounds. anyways, please enlighten with scriptoral citation -- i would love to have this knowledge in my own religious text referencing. 🥰
@@chelebeaqueen this is what I'm here for, nothing is much spoken about Jesus teen years. It only speaks of his childhood and when he was in his 30's in adulthood. Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. Whatever your beliefs are if your spiritually in the light as an individual then you are on the right path. That's why it's called the narrow path and not the wide path. The relationship between and Your higher being is the only one that matter, the world will see whom you walk with and unfortunately this world tends to judge all faction of life. You can't be to happy or misery will come knocking on your door. THE LORD or higher being you believe in build around the Temple where the darkness comes in from. Think before you react and your chances of succeeding in this world is greater then most. The Temple spoken about by Jesus was your thoughts and the evil thoughts you skip pass when confronted with a trial. That is the fight in the desert between Satan and Jesus. Control your angry and the devil will be behind you always. It's okay to have outrageous thoughts we will never control that but we can control our body functions.
I started with that at 15 and got my whole family as enemies, exept my mom. But I continued, had only some friends, worked a while got fired, then new job.... etc. Never financial strength enough to be interesting to a girl... But I worked in spare hours, steadily on my goal and training, because I liked the concentration. Now I am there. I do that what I envisioned as 15. I never thougt I get there, it is a wonder. It is really possible!
This one stuck with me. Went to university, worked really hard to try and be a psychotherapist. Got my first job recently in the field I aimed at, I think I'm going to be able to some good work for these folks. Thank you for all you've done for me, Jordan. Stay well, I'm holding out for the full-circle return of NDP Jordan in 2024
I love this. I’m still working on only telling the truth, or at least not lying. It’s changed my life and people around me, because people know I’m going to tell the truth and not placate anymore.
Same. My main focus. I just can't believe how much better life has become. So excited to play 'the game of life' and not some made up game I was playing before.
I’m so glad you said this. I got the impression as a kid that telling the truth was all important and what adults said was always true. Boy did have it wrong. Because of this I struggled to trust adults. I noticed the lies. After all my father instilled deeply in me to always question authority. Now I see the value in this. First, is the authority truly an honest expert or a dictator? I too began to tell white lies. The most dangerous among them told to myself.
I too was raised with "honesty is the best policy" by my parents. For one thing, you don't have to remember what you told who. Your stories are consistent. But being honest about our shortcomings can be really hard. That adds impetus to do as few bad things as possible. Mistakes? Well, those are unavoidable in many cases, but if one learns valuable lessons from them, then be glad they happened. Honor their contribution to your growth.
The real game is being honest with those who want to work with you and who need consistency from you. Learn to recognise lies and which people tell them by thr boatload and stay the fuck away from them.
I just love his mind. It works on a much higher caliber, but similar process as mine. Especially being a hairstylist and dealing with my own personal life and pursuits while simultaneously dealing with and encouraging others and teaching really each other. He can tap into so many different levels while trying to articulate them all at the same time.
For me, this conversation full on encapsulates the core essence (& meaning) of Free Will itself. "Choose your Path. And, *all* Paths lead to The One." Truly Beautiful 🙏🏼.
whenever I came to hear his lectures, every pieces of his words r sth out of well-written literary classics passed down on generations... and his brilliance of composing what he's trying to convey in a very disciplined and organized manner seems way beyond out of my reach...just making me speechless
@@steven5054 yea no questions that he has been insisting the significance of a Bible tho he by no mean claimed or had any sorts of remarks as to the Bible is the ultimate remedy or answer (whatever u wanna call em) for every issues
You absolutely are articulating Divine Truth, confirmation of the importance of stepping up & speaking out, when you see a desperate need for wisdom & can't be selfish & just watch society descending into chaos! To see evil & do/say nothing IS evil! In these times it takes more courage than you think yourself capable of, & a willingness to sacrifice your ego & perhaps your life! Thank you for your courage, it's contagious!
Thank you so much for your work Jordan. I'm reading beyond order currently, and have been been inspired and enboldened by it. As someone who gets anxious often about death and failure to make anything of my life, it means so much to me to see a way out, to take responsibility of even the small things, and bear suffering with courage.
Hi Jordan, I've recently watched your 4 part series with Sam Harris and I just watched your podcast with the 4 kings about 7 months ago... It was truly amazing to watch, like a beautiful dance. But I feel you guys didn't go deep enough. You only began to scratch the surface in the very last hour of the 4th part. I just wish you two could see the big picture of what we call life. In a world where you're both 100 percent right about everything. An it's so much more beautiful than you ever imagined. One of my biggest wishes in life is to meet Jordan peterson. When you find the real meaning of art an it's importance to humanity you will be so humbled it's almost beautiful. "You can't see the forest within the trees"
When I ran out of empathy in my teen years, I trained myself to Think Empatheticly to help avoid becoming evil. I was on psych meds that didnt help (my mental health was trauma related). Think for yourselves 🤞 save your souls
"handbook says : there is no handbook" ... well, no ess eff wtf, right? with the invention of the printing press in, what 1420?, and there is the commonly accepted "circulation" argument, i.e. the ideas blossoming during that time and forward to present were held in a particular place and time and then spread like wildfire via the circulation of the printed word. no, though. say the intellectual historians (of which i am one humble number), these ideas seemingly circulated are/were indeed 'of the time' in such a way that the spread of information was by means of dissemination --> the wide circulation of a set, printed text. i always remember here that anthropological argument, something about parallel populations of island monkeys that figure out 'i can crack open a coconut and get "milk"!' at relatively the same time. p.s. how 'bout that Erasmus, eh? p.p.s. why isn't there a division of Christianity called "Erasmusarian" or whatever? do i have to actually make this how-is-it-not-so reality? (don't dare me, double triple or otherwise, because methinks i shall attempt this anyways. so there. [cue Lily Tomlin as Little Girl In Big Chair "...and that's the Truth 😝!"])
Good job! If I might ask, what do you think was it that made you not giving in and choosing to change that? your conciousness? the knowledge that that would be the "right" thing to do? Or sth else? Just trying to understand where people get the beautiful power to change their lives/behaviour conciously (and hopefully gain a hint to help someone who does not)
Thank you for helping me to literally save my life Dr. Peterson, still have a ways to go, its a lifelong road to walk but am willing to walk it I am off of booze & dope & going to school for psychology in fall , I just turned 30 & have overdosed on Xanax twice both times waking up in an ambulance , I never thought I’d make it this far but I got a cat & an apartment in Colorado been in therapy for the last seven months have helped greatly & I am grateful for you and others I have started to learn from , mistakes & successes , thank you eternally , Tammy has also inspired my faith quite a bit
Thank you for posting, because when I went to listen to one of Dr.P’s lecture’s I could only focus on how amazing it was to be at his lecture and Im not sure how much I really heard! 😂 He Is my rock star! 😂😂😂
You have been an inspiration to alot of people, given them voice and stood firm in this Era of ideological Warfare. I wish once in my life i could meet you and shake your hand and tell you that you have completely changed my life.
That 'Heaven on Earth' explanation was spot on. Happened to me when I went to Key West a few years back...it was so peaceful and time literally stopped. We were just hanging around and chilling thru town with my wife and all of a sudden it was 7:30pm...we actually felt like we just woke up and it was early afternoon maybe. Incredible. We spontaneously booked 2 more nights, there was no way we'd drive back to Miami that "quickly".
I love to put JP's talks in the context of creationism. And I find it suits that mentality very well. To the point it doesn't matter which view you have, his mechanical knowledge of the Bible and life is amazingly helpful.
I recently have met and been talking with your friend Charles, turned our daughters go to the same daycare. Thank you Jordan. You help me try and navigate this journey through life.
In life you may not always know what you want or should do, But you damn well gonna learn what you don't want and shouldn't do. All are still good opportunities to grow from.
This is basically my starting point with those I am providing support to. What does "hope" mean? To me it is having a mental image of what your life looks like as your best self, and the assurance that it is not only possible, but inevitable. I use the "light at the end of the tunnel" analogy. In the dark, that vision is nothing but a distant light, but as one leaves the tunnel, the vision comes into focus. Therfore, the development of that vision is the engine that pulls one out of the tunnel. And it is the motivation of that vision which supplies the energy, determination and discipline required to make that vision manifest.
Hi Jordan! I watch your videos regularly and with some of them I don't agree but with many I do. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Republic of Bosnia!
I love the advice of if your not who you want to be think about how you could be better. Jordan always delivering a positive message. I'm interested in fitness mostly because a trainer grabbed my interest ( she is my hero) and this past year of training nearly every day has increased my confidence immensely in so many ways. "The hero is a potential stage of development for you!" Soooo true. We are interested in things that develop us.
I aim to be who my children think I am. When they're my age, I want them to say I was their soft place to fall who loved them truly unconditionally. Sending peace, warmth and love to ALL OF YOU. I really really mean that. ❤️❤️❤️
I am a learning individual.. And how you deliver your messages sir, are solid, concise, amazingly done! I do wish to learn more from what life has for me.. What the Lord has for me.. More amazing contents and more blessings to come to your life sir Peterson!
Every time I've fallen short of obeying this rule, the results of the bitterness that comes with it are dreadful. This rule is one that is worth keeping a close eye on. Otherwise the consequences can be crippling.
Watching your lectures and motivations interest me alot cause of your educational speak and found myself connected and enjoying commenting educational way and comprehending the values of your work are truly highly appreciated , i myself never taught that i would like to views alot of your content ...God bless and more power to you Professor Jordan Peterson
35:10 This is especially true in our time. And if we prove incapable of using our newfound freedoms responsibly, they will be taken away. Thus, I believe that at least one element of a healthy and growing civilization, and individual, is an appropriate balance of the expansion of freedom and the maintenance of that expansion through a developed sense of responsibility; Peterson, I believe, serves as the representative of responsibility, for it is that which prevents man from loosing himself, and keeps his focus on the sacred, i.e., the universal and eternal truths which man cannot and must not place himself above.
what an outstanding HOST! Such logical yet practical questions to the talk in general 👍👌 2 big brains 🤓🧠🤓🧠 digging deep. sadly most won't understand the succinct points made here. would love to listen to MORE 👏👏👏
Dr. Peterson, you may be the answer to bridging the gap between rich and poor and Race division. Teaching everyone to transcend their racial groups. The real enemy is without when the curtains of deception is dropped. ( current PM proves your point. ) Then we see, ALM🙏
Yes, “optimal” incremental aims with multifarious compounding can make you unstoppable eventually but you can’t ever expect to fit in “normal society”. Actions speak louder than words quite often.
Identity is a tricky one concerning social acceptance. Many people in the past, especially geniuses, Dirac, Einstein, Tesla, etc. were downright weird and unacceptable socially. But genius is dangerous and Jordan is right about incorporating your identity in a decent, hopefully mature, manner.
This rule 2, and rules 3 and 11 have had a great key-like effect, unlocking part of me, although it’s still an effort, building strength and health in 2021 when reading it and now through this current spring and summer 2022. Really, the whole book is so good. Edit: really a strange thing, after 12 RFL and Beyond Order, I’ve been inspired to write more poems... and reading them, buying old volumes and tackling Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost. Focussing single-mindedly on written beauty.
@@king.indigo3692 probably depends who you ask. Derrida might say it's the goal, Kipling might say it's an accomplishment in pursuit of beauty, on the way to being a man, my son.
Honestly I've listened to both your pod casts... that's why it's hard to believe that the answer is hard to grasp for you guy's? Suffering brings humility! Dr. Peterson. The truth sets us free, that also comes with many troubles at least for the first part of this video please consider! Jesus put his/our Father first. In all temptation and suffering only too cry out at the end. "Father why have you forsaken me, please forgive them for they do not know what they do". I am not even able to pretend to teach others in fear of the All Mighty, I am a sinner and maybe a coward in this regard... yet I fully understand the weight of delivering the truth as it has been given to me. In all honesty this isn't meant to dissuade you... rather encourage you to be bold if possible in the face of your many temptations. God Bless!!! In Jesus's name.🙌
8:40 This right here hit me hard. I just got accepted into a marriage and family therapy master's program today. It's been the culmination of so much hard work and time (and I still got a ways to go) but I am over the moon. I smoke probably more than a pack of day and it is without a doubt the only regret that I have in my life, from the very first cigarette I ever smoked. It just really gives me a great deal of perspective into Dr. Petersons life and his story there really resonated for me. Sometimes I feel kind of like an outcast for being a smoker in the field of psychology and therapy because the milieu is that therapists are these people that have to ultimately healthy, wise, and ostensibly perfect but man is that a load of crap lol. I appreciate Petersons rawness and his honesty for bearing it all for our benefit. This man is a real repository of knowledge for the global community right now. God bless him for real!
You could be a leader to help people to bring them out from darkness into the light, this is not easy because you need to be sincere to the truth, honest, you should be conscious , because sometimes it is not easy for some of us to move from a place they used to live within .
The meaning of life is... nothing. The 'purpose' of life is, you are part of the origin story for intelligent life, from Earth! Stay motivated, friends!
I finished Beyond Order last night and I want to go through it again with a highlighter. Sometimes Jordan has so much to say in only a few sentences, like the Bible itself :)
Yeah, screw the highlighter man. Make memory bridges. Read a little bit and then write about what this information connects to and what personal experience it makes you think of. This is what Dr. Peterson recommends.
I believe if I wrote down everything I’ve done for the past 10 years and then watched this video , 75% of what I had wrote down , would be in this video. I just wanted to say thank you Dr. I just have to remember to keep watching and not let the hours become days , the days weeks and the weeks become years.
Want to know if your listening to someone worthwhile? Set your phone down and mute the sound periodically. If you can unmute and find yourself right back into the pocket of their argument, with little to no personal effort, you have yourself a winner. Dr. Peterson is gifted in his ability to find and straddle the narrow path of universal truth, and for that God bless the man.
Finally broke down and joined DW+, got the least expensive membership to watch JBP's new content but that can only be seen on the upgraded membership. Welcome to my life right now hahaha
Hi Jordan, I have purchased both 12 rules a while ago, and for my birthday 20 June picked up Beyond Order. I hope that in reading these I shall become wiser and a more equipped man to navigate this world and gain some IQ points. I hope you are well take care. Thank you.
Finally, you’re out on your own but that’s the same for everyone. You needn’t fear Death, Pain, Fear itself. Your future aims are indeterminate but there are “no limits” in a metaphysical way.
The section with Aubrey Marcus, and talking about the snitch / Orb of Chaos. My mind was blown when i got to thinking about that symbol, as well as knowing (spoiler alert) that inside the snitch was the resurrection stone. And that he had been carrying around the ability to reconstitute himself.
A very important thing to do. Though once you start setting your ''new standard''.. things can get pretty rough. Instead of fearing the discomfort and pain that comes with change, realize that it's exactly that pain and discomfort that will cause you to grow, to become a more complete version of yourself.. if you'd only weather it. And I say that whilst having a beer and slacking off from working on my art projects, smh.
Takes me so long to watch these videos . After a great quote like “ The fact a symphony ends , doesn’t mean it wasn’t worth listening to “ would be like walking through a beautiful garden and not stopping to smell the flowers. I just have to stop and digest these quotes and there are so many great ones.
I'll definitely buy your audio-book Jordan, you've become for me a guy who knows how to lead and commit myself on things that I truly want to achieve for life, thanks for such content . God bless you
Good evening Dr. Peterson. I know you are exceptionally busy, but if you ever find the time in your hugely busy schedule, would it be ok if we could have a very brief chat. Your take on mental health has helped me hugely and I must want to thank you for your insight and understanding. I am consistently detrimental, and at nearly 40 years old, I am very tired of it
