Beyond rescue, the TRAGIC story of Mary Sanderson

These rocks are The Brisons which lie just offshore from Cape Cornwall. They have claimed many ship over the years but the story of the ‘New Commercial’ in January 1851 is particularly tragic. Survivors clung to the Brisons for many hours, in fact a day and 2 nights before the storm abated enough to allow a rescue attempt.
We hope you enjoy watching Sarah & Andrew
The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on RU-vid, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
Unfortunately we cannot answer comments coming in more than a week after the publishing date of the video.
Frequently asked questions:
Do we do meet ups?
We regularly receive requests to meet up from viewers and subscribers, but unfortunately we do not have availability to be able to do this.
The channel is a very time consuming hobby, fitted around our employment and family commitments. Setting aside time for meet ups, means that we are not able to film and edit our weekly videos that you love to watch.
If you happen to bump into us while out and about, we will be more than happy to have a quick chat!
Sarah and Andrew
What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

This was a sad but wonderful story Sarah - your ability to ‘story tell’ is amazing - it even brought a tear to my eyes. The sea with all it’s beauty is also cruel.

Very sad.. to think she survived all night on the Brysons.. only to perish when they were trying to save her 😏. Especially as she saved the captains life. Lovely to think that perhaps in response, due to her bravery, they set up the RNLI... You could look at it that she has now helped to save many lives at sea 🙏💖😘

Thank you for fighting weather and wind to show and tell us this dramatic and gruelling story. Poor all of them. Imagine to sit on an island in such weather for a whole night and then die while being rescued. Nature can be mercyless. I have heard about this rocket which apparently has saved hundreds of lives if not thousends. Great video 🥰 Torunn.

Before my parents lived moved to Cornwall, we lived on the clifftop near Hastings. When we were there, back in the 1970's there was still a coastguard there. On foggy days the moan of the fog horn could be heard, and there was always a crew looking out from the station. One of them was a friend's Dad. It's so good to know that that tiny station is manned, at least during the day. I can't imagine how ships manage these days! I know radio etc has come a long way since Mary's day, but even so! We regularly saw helicopters hovering over the sea when we lived in St Austell, day and night. Thank you for a very moving story.

So close, and yet the sea took her anyway. Also to consider, in 1851 she would have at minimum been wearing a tight bodice, corset, long skirt, and one or two petticoats. I saw a fascinating BBC documentary that examined the large number of women who died of drowning in the Medieval days, due to their long dresses. This occurred often in rivers and streams, where it was easy to fall in, or get the long skirts wet while doing laundry or fetching water. Even the modern hostess of the documentary, Suzannah Lipscomb, got into trouble in the water while wearing this type of clothing. It was a chilling experiment. Thank you for bringing Mary's story to us all. I wonder what happened to her husband afterward. Did he recover his senses? He must have had some type of PTSD.

One of your best Sarah & Andrew! Very sad event, it certainly shouldnt be forgotten & thank you for paying respect by visiting her grave. 😢A lot must have been learnt about how to attempt rescues at that time. The emotion in your voices & the weather conditions as you film, immerse us in the narrative. A place dear to me too from visits to Cornwall as child( 1960's) with my parents & as a parent with my children (1980's to present day) My Dad filming Cape Cornwall on hos cine camera & these days my husband & son filming on a 360° camera. How times have changed! But the view remarkably stays vitually the same ( thanks to The National Trust & the amazing gift from Heinz ,but thats another story or rather another of your films 😊)

@CornishWalkingTrails just keep in mind when kayaking anywhere on the sea, " the sea wants to kill you" I stay safe then saved me in the padt I decided to kayak from Chesil beach harbour there I left the huge harbour to paddle to Weymouth beach I passed a fisherman shaking his head... taken about 200 ft out the harbour and waves were too rough I decided harbour was safer best decision ever had a lovely paddle towards the black Swan sanctuary resr of Chesil beach.. I'm still here yey.. Kev

That is such a sad story. They must have been exhausted after so long clinging to the rocks in such a gale, which probably contributed to poor Mary's death. I love Cape Cornwall and its surroundings, particularly the Kenidjack Valley. There's an amazing cave of many colours round from Priest's Cove, I've never been but I intend to get to it some day, just needs a very low tide - there are RU-vid videos of it by Lucas Nott and Cornish Xplora, it looks spectacular. Many thanks!

This is a sad story but it doesn't hit me like the Penlee lifeboat disaster of 1981. That is the worst Cornwall tragedy at sea that I know about and it always brings tears when I recall what happened. I think it is because it happened in my lifetime. What makes it so sad is that the Crew of the Solomon Brown Lifeboat were lost as well as those they went to rescue aboard the Union Star. It was just a few days before Christmas which made things even worse.

what a tale and so well portrayed by you both. The harshness of the climate you experienced while filming must have been a fraction of the ferocity that the seas gave during the disaster. Amazing also to hear about all the onlookers from the shore, clearly a higher population in those days.
