Beyond "Smells and Bells": Why We Need the Objective Content of the Usus Antiquior

In his Apostolic Constitution Missale Romanum (April 3, 1969), Pope Paul VI specified that the Novus Ordo Missae would go into effect on the First Sunday of Advent that year - November 30, exactly fifty years ago. In my recent Minneapolis lecture, written with an eye to this important anniversary, I argue that the Novus Ordo Missae constitutes a rupture with fundamental elements of all liturgies of apostolic derivation (eight such elements are identified in the talk), and that, as a consequence, it violates the Church’s solemn obligation to receive, cherish, guard, and pass on the fruits of liturgical development. Since this development is, in fact, a major way in which the Holy Spirit leads the Church “into the fullness of truth” over the ages, as Christ promised, so great a "sin against the Holy Spirit" cannot fail to have enormous negative consequences, as indeed the past five decades have verified. Nor is it possible to bridge the abyss between old and new by applying cosmetics or the drapery of elegant clothing, because the problem is on the order of a genetic mutation, or damage to internal organs. The profound and permanent solution is to maintain continuity with the living liturgical tradition found in the usus antiquior.

Very helpful to this EO Christian. Note: Copts receive the Body in the hand BUT holding a special cloth. The Blood is received separately with a spoon.

It was the night of Jewish Passover Jews had to attend to their religious observances. Jews worshipped the Messiah in advance. The Jewish Passover prayers that were said in the Temple in Jerusalem that Jesus attended with His Apostles on the night He was betrayed were passed over to the Gentiles and the Gentiles were now incorporated into the Passover. Those Passover Prayers are Perpetual and cant be changed They are to remain until end of time. Only a remnant will remain.

A most insightful, inspiring lecture, particularly valuable to an uncomfortable Anglican seeking proper tradition, reverence and holy practice. Please accept my most humble thanks. If I may, where can one find such a traditional Latin missal in electronic form? I see many online, but I am uncertain which ones are uncorrupted.

It's not easy to find any complete or totally reliable online. Here are some pretty good options: www.extraordinaryform.org/properssundays.html tridentine-mass.blogspot.com/ propria.org/propers-for-feasts-and-commemorations/ maternalheart.org/resources/mass-propers-of-the-season/ May the Lord guide your steps in the way of His truth!

Paul VI Mass has none of the 8 elements needed.

Dr Kwasniewski based on what you said regarding the NO mass: is it your position that the new Mass is dangerous to souls,displeasing to God, and should never be attended (even if there is no Latin mass available) Or is your view that it simply a less better option to the Tridentine Mass?
@peterkwasniewski9003
@peterkwasniewski9003 4 года назад
It is indeed dangerous to souls and displeasing to God, not because of the valid consecration, but because of all of the other problems my lecture discusses, not to mention the abominable manner in which it is celebrated (which I didn't even touch on, because it's so obvious). However, the Church places on us a serious obligation, which binds under mortal sin, to attend the Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of obligation. For this reason, the advice I give is as follows. (1) Seek out a TLM, even if you have to drive a long distance. (2) If that is not possible, seek out an Eastern Catholic liturgy. (3) Or an Anglican Ordinariate liturgy. (4) If none of the above is available at all, then attend the "best" N.O. you can find, that is, one that is at least offered with a spirit of reverence. If it turns out to be abusive, one can take refuge in a cryroom or a vestibule or on the steps or a bench nearby, praying the rosary or praying with one's missal. The point is to make an effort to fulfill this obligation while at the same time avoiding what is dangerous to one's soul and displeasing to God. Is it not clear that the times we live in often put Catholics between a rock and a hard place?

Peter Kwasniewski thanks for your response. I am pretty much of the same mind. But I have struggled with the idea of attending a mass that is displeasing to God in order to fulfill ones obligation. It would seems that one could not fulfill one Sunday obligation at such a mass. God would not want us to attend a mass which displeases him. In fact it would be sin to attend sacrilegious mass. This seems to be the position of the SSPX on the new mass. What are you thoughts?
@peterkwasniewski9003
@peterkwasniewski9003 4 года назад
@@StAnthonyPaduaRadTrad I am familiar with the SSPX arguments and find them inconclusive. I do not see that the sacrilege occasioned by or baked into the N.O. is worse than the sin committed by failing to attend a Mass in person. To me, this is a serious crisis of conscience, and I have resolved to avoid it by never living anywhere where I cannot attend the TLM, and never traveling unless I can get to a TLM.

Peter Kwasniewski thanks. It is indeed a crisis of conscious for myself as well. I have to say that their position is attractive based on the reality of the new mass, but I have not gotten to the point where I would skip mass. ( luckily there is Latin mass as well as a Byzantine liturgy within local driving distance) so this has not come to a head yet. Just wondering if others were feeling what I was feeling that are not part of then Sspx. Thanks again

@@peterkwasniewski9003 Still have to listen to the presentation but I have to interject: You put Anglican liturgy as an option? Is that a mass at all? Do they explicitly confirm the transubstantiation and theology of the catholic mass when they switch?
