The Primacy of Tradition and Obedience to the Truth

A fundamental principle of the traditionalist movement is that the liturgy of the Church -- her body of immemorial, venerable, universal, approved and received rites -- stands at the core of what it means to be Catholic, to believe as a Catholic, to live as a Catholic. In its refusal to follow Paul VI's order to stop using the Roman Rite and to substitute for it his own modern rite, the traditionalist movement was characterized from the start by a primordial act of material disobedience for the sake of a higher obedience. This continues and ought to continue today.
Catholics, equipped with the double gift of reason and faith, are capable of recognizing a pope's public and abject failure to uphold 'received and approved rites' (Trent); they are capable of seeing when he is assaulting souls and attempting to destroy the Church. Such efforts on his part deserve to be met with firm resistance.
Kwasniewski argues in particular that Traditionis Custodes is absolutely null and utterly void from its first letter to its last punctuation mark, for it rests on impossibilities, incoherences, and contradictions. It attacks the Church’s self-identity in her godly and God-approved worship. It attacks her lex credendi. It attacks the common good of all the faithful-both those that make use of the Roman liturgy and those that make use of other Western rites and Eastern rites, whose position has been radically destabilized. It attacks in a bewildering variety of ways the rights of bishops, priests, deacons, religious, and laity.
Now is the time for intelligent, principled, valiant, and uncompromising action.

“Tradidi enim vobis in primis quod et accepi” as his eminence Marcel Lefevbre Motu well kept through what could well be said the Perfect Storm for destruction. Let us hold fast and thank our Lord Jesus Christ for guiding his eminence Mon. Marcel Lefevbre for being faithful to Tradition with all those that in times of difficult discernment stood fast and were faithful to and had given testimony and to motivate all those like me that were blind for the longest time. It is not easy for anybody like me to see how terrible it is to erase the most important thing (Identity) of anyone who now “sees” the damage caused from an induced deviation of believes specially the only True Faith with out any scruples for damaging of souls. Thank you Dr. and may our Good Lord pay you all you are doing for his Kingship, even if we have to go through what is necessary for His Second Coming. We know that His Triumph is not as men would think.

God bless you for this! As one who has hung onto her missals and veils all these years, feeling like an alien at Mass until we found a TLM parish 30 years ago (76 miles away), and fought for conservative values in the Church and in the nation, I was moved to tears by your words. May we be fortified by the knowledge that we are fighting on the side of Truth and that we are not alone.

@Kathryn Hichborn - Your family is so blessed to have you, to lead by your many good examples. So many people I know submitted to obedience of Novus Ordo Priests without question, who themselves should have been questioning. Catholic School, VBS, The Edge Catechism etc destroyed Catholicism within my older children. I stand alone within our community. The older children are now an example to the younger children and so the hemorrhaging goes without ceasing. Settled now within TLM, though local parishes with outdoor Mass, face masks and hand sanitizers and extended beyond reopening dates with a vaccine book to sign in order to separate the vaxed people from the non vaxed in the pews, even my younger children won’t sit the journey to the TLM. The damage is immense and public Schools have also made their contributions. ☘️

As much as I admire Pitre's work, I admit I'm nervous about this series, because every time a conservative has tried to do an account of the Mass, they end up making cringeworthy historical mistakes. Liturgy is a subtle and detailed discipline that biblical scholars are seldom familiar with.

-----Dr. Dietrich Von Hildebrand (The Devastated Vineyard, Roman Catholic Books, rep. 1985 [Chapter VIII] ): “...obviously it would be COMPLETELY WRONG in ANY WAY to question its validity as reproduction of the Sacrifice of Calvary as SADLY some Catholics have done. And it goes without saying that it would also be completely wrong to disobey any of the rulings of the Holy Father regarding the Novus Ordo and the Tridentine liturgy.”
@DrKwasniewski
@DrKwasniewski Месяц назад
I have never questioned the validity of the new Mass. But Dietrich von Hildebrand himself strongly opposed the imposition of the liturgical reform, so I am not sure what his last comment could mean, or how it squares with his actual life record. I believe you are taking this very much out of the context of his life and work as a whole.

@DrKwasniewski i m directly quoting him from his book. You can buy the book and read it by yourself on chapter viii. He there also quotes Pastor Aeternus on obidience to the Pope. What many catholics dont understand is that one thing being in agreement with the desicions of the Pope and another completely different thing is the duty of Catholics to obey the Pope on his official magisterium decisions REGARDLESS if you think the desicion is good or terrible. Von Hildebrand understood this. He was completely against Paul VI s desicion BUT knew of his obligation to obey it as per the Doctrine of Pastor Aternus. Apples and Oranges
@ronaledoexciacontracor
@ronaledoexciacontracor Месяц назад
@@DrKwasniewski Von Hildebrand understood that as per Pastor Aeternus (he himself quoted on the above mentioned segment of his book) a Catholic must obey the decisions of the Pope, even if you dont agree with it. Von Hildebrand was of the personal opinion that promulgating Missale Romanum was an error from Pope Paul VI and it will have bad consequences in the West (North America, Western Europe). Regardless of his personal opinion, Von Hildebrand knew of the DUTY as per Pastor Aeternus of a Catholic to obey all official Magisterium acts of the Pope (not the personal opinions of the Pope or his unofficial recommendations) and therefore while strongly opposing Pope Paul VI's decision, he obeyed and stated in Chapter VIII that it will be completely wrong for any Catholic no to obey the Pope. Then he puts as Footnote a reference to the key Paragraph of Pastor Aeternus. Being in agreement with the Pope official magisterium decisions and decrees is one thing. We are all free to agree or not to agree. Another thing the full obligation of obeying as per Pastor Aeternus.

That's a caricature of the SSPX's position, as I'm sure you know. If we are truly in a state of crisis, we cannot expect the very causes of the crisis (pope and bishops) to be the ones who validate that there's a crisis and then who very kindly provide faculties to traditional clergy. That should be a no-brainer.

Yes. The Mass is timeless. It is past, present, and into the Future. Christ Himself, unity within the Godhead, honors His Divine Sacrifice and the TLM cannot be declared null in the present day for what was declared Divine yesterday. Papal Authority cannot declare Christ's Sacrifice null at any time or prevent its celebration for it stands for all time. (An invalid Mass, liturgy can be declared anathema by a Council of Bishops (headed by the Pontiff) if it is lacking Divine continuity. However, The very reason the Temple Sacrifice has Christ as Divine Fulfillment is because The Godhead honors His Sacrifice from the beginning. The blood of animals, a placeholder, for Christ's incarnation to complete by His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, finds Divine expression in the substitutionary species received in the TLM and other properly sanctioned Liturgies and rites of the past. This is continuity, not rupture. Every Divine Liturgy declares the foremost Sacrificial nature of it's liturgy. The Altar is prime and cannot be replaced by the Laodicean table.

@@samaritain16Respectfully, you only know that Bible verse because the books of the Bible (which are a part of Tradition) were passed down. @@damadgamer34 "Whoever does not love, knows not God because God is love", The primacy of Tradition yes but that Tradition has Love as its center, first of all. And not going from that principle made the Church err in the crusades, war and so on, to defend a so called Tradition without its center.

"Oh," but the villain says, "We aren't *universally* prohibiting anything, or saying you must *altogether* change from one thing to another! You just can't have 99.99% of the opportunities you used to have! You just have to go from one thing to the other in most cases! Certainly not altogether or universally, though!"
