Ilayaraja is a real prodigy. I feel a little hesitant to say that I am a fan of Raja on the internet because people always bring up his personal character rather than his music. I always feel like we need to accept someone the way they are; we can't expect someone to be perfect just because they are a celebrity. none of us are purely good or bad; we are all progressing somewhere, hoping it is in the right direction. like Vijay Varadharaj na, from now on, I am also going to say out loud that I am an Ilayaraja fan.
As a musician who was a part of Raja sirs voice group from.1992 to 2003 ..Including Hey ram .(.L.Subramniams ) recording ,6 months after which we were called by subbiah sir (in charge ) to sing again for the same movie under Raja sir, i appreciate your appreciation of the genius ... This generation like you is finally appreciating the SUPER COMPOSER RAJA SIR
Late 1970 s is very tough period for new composers, since MSV ,Shankar Ganesh, V.Kumar, Vijayabaskar,KVM and others amid Hindi songs dominated the field.Yet Raja sir done it like Enter the Dragon and then rule the industry like sultan till date..ARR and others also good but out of Raja sir dynasty 🔥
Raja Sir is a genius. No doubt in it. But I am not sure if I am the one, but noticed tempo issues is many of his songs (and I completely understand those all were live sessions - I cannot question considering the time limit he had and the amount of works he has done and also extremely busy). Few songs that comes to my mind is Kodai Kaala Katre 1st interlude and Poonkatru Pudhidhanadhu (that train bgm interlude - which will take my breathe - Moochu vaangum when I imagine about those strings played at half beat) HI hats will also miss its tempo. I am sorry to point it out below this good video. But songs like Poove Sempoove, Megham Kottatum, Poo Potta Dhavani, Kattu Kuyile - Vere level and I remember my band drummer asked me "Why is he composing like this, simple uh iruntha enna problem?" - when he played the starting drum beat in Kattu Kuyilu and the place where it ends is very crucial and tough for a drummer if he misses the count.. I replied "Avar apdi pannala na - you would not be talking about him and he is a genius". Song that I need to mention for time signature is "Innum Ennai Enna Seiyya Pogirai" - Nee thaanae naan paadum, Sugamaana aagaasa vaani, Paadaamal koodaamal, Urangaadhu reengaara theni - These lines will be in a different time signature and he will match it with the beat and I have gotten inspired and composed my song with this technique and I am happy for it. I had also commented in first part of this video. Do consider my request in the forthcoming videos. Brain of Mr. Illayaraja is complicated and I realized one thing recently that if everyone goes for western music who would encourage Indian music and its instruments. That is where Raja stood stubborn - However everything has its pros and cons. Also, concerts of Raja sir - They play the instruments unfortunately when others use karaoke :D Good episode and I like the person who explains it in a convincing manner and I have also started following your channel for knowing different types of music and artist. Good and your channel is a boon to Thamizh Audience (Esp) and music enthusiasts and also for music directors who are well established in our industry (their perspective might change and ideas flow in easily)- as no other group did something like this in the past. Keep going!!! :)
Thank you Adithyan. So here is my (Berty) hypothesis. When he composed and played it, it was in time and tempo. But when converting to tape they werent as careful And all our digital versions are taken from the original analog tapes, hence the slight tempo changes carried over. Remember, all these were written fro vinyl, so to make them fit within the specific time slots they would slightly altered the running time. My hypotheses is strengthened by that fact that the same songs, when performed live are super tight! This same issue also plagues certain recordings of Tchaikovsky. The vinyl versions have tiny tempo errors, and the digital versions of the same.
Even I am a huge Raja sir fan but I can’t sleep while listening to his music. It makes me feel light and comfortable but at some point I start listening to it deeply without sleeping. Btw good show.. keep it coming.
I don't listen Raja sir's songs mostly.. After your video , I Noted how the music is.. then i was mad on it thanks guys ❤ Now im learning new things in raja sir's music ..
I would like to refer " en Rasavin manasile" film which was village based film ,yet bass work was quite amazing and extraordinary..kuyil paattu ,parijaadha poove having sema bass note...in that movie in a particular scene arunmozhi flute followed by sasidharan muniyandi bass guitar and violin orchestration seems world class ... Ilayaraja super power 🔥
13:15 'How To Name It' did not know this about its overuse over there. having grown up in another country i have fortunately not been spammed with this but i can see why it would be used so much - so beautiful. so divine. so connected. listening to it for the first time awakened something.
Amazing episodes, both part 1 and 2. My YT feed led me to these and I have to applaud the creators for highlighting the Western classical foundations in Raja's music. Note that there is a LOT of content out there that speaks to the carnatic / Indian classical elements but I personally believe that Raja's music is a true aggregation of "all things classical and timeless". If one analyzes his compositions, one sees more and more examples of motifs, sequences, chromaticism, counterpoint, complex time signatures, vocal harmony, key modulation, voice leading, ostinato, canons and more! Keen listeners can learn Western classical music theory simply by listening to Raja's music alone. Look forward to more such content from you!!!
at last some one talk about the bass every song are beautify by the bass me too since young only love to listen western song then there someone down to the earth who call maestro illayaraja so start to listen his song then find out something is happening in tamil music industry this guy is creating superb bass notes to his song really amazing
Awesome episode. We need more ppl like Berty bro to explain why Maestro is mentioned in same breath as Mozart, Beethovan etc 👏👏👏👏 One of my favorite song with fantastic bass lines is Chinna Chinna Muthu Neerile - sung by KJ Yesudass - Movie : Ninaika Therinthe Maname

Hi Berty, a big fan of your work. Wished me too had a parents who made us to read music since childhood. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and will be very happy if I ever had a chance to speak to you in person. ❤
Difference between Ilaiyaraaja sir and others.. Keith Peters says Rahman asks him to do whatever he wants to do and he will pick one from it. Harris also does the same it seems. So we all know who is the real composer.
Megam kottatum is from Enakkul Oruvan. Interestingly there is another song called Engeyen Kadhali from the same movie. If you have not listened to it, please do. I think it's IR's own bohemian rhapsody.
We love All songs of Enakkul orovan movie from the time of movie released which was great with western bass and classical. But our peoples is still not understanding and appreciate.
Very nice episode bro.. Appreciate the info Berty bro is sharing.. I too as a Musician share his views abt Raja sir's Genius👍 But just to clarify, Pesum Padam & Hindi version Pushpak was scored by L. Vaidyanathan and NOT Ilayaraja. But personally I wished this Film music would v been done by Raja, it wd been at a Greater level 👌
