See, if D&D just put away their pretensions and went full James Bond/Resident Evil 4/Mission Impossible with this episode, this episode could have been a literal fountain of memes. They sure as fuck wanted an action-spectacle episode, so they shouldn't have weighed the dialog down with the...tone, *everything* about the previous seasons.

As a queen, she can't be oblivious to the pain and danger her dragons may pose to her subjects. The Targaryens of old probably had training methods to keep their dragons in check, but Dany did not know of any. She did what she thought was best for the common people, with the little information she had about her dragons, and in spite of her own feelings. She only locked Rhaegar and Viserion because Drogon was unreachable, but at that point she really cared about them. She actually cries when she has to lock them up. It's after she returns to Meereen that suddenly R and V are like rented napalm drones and only Drogon matters.

I mean if you really think about it this was foreshadowed because Jon has friends and also taht one scene where the brotherhood finds Aryan and Hot pie and Genders (Arya and her friends), was also foreshadowing, because the brotherhood are avid followers of Rhollor. They want to find Arya and her FRIENDS even though they should really be looking for the ptwp, but that is just a subversion of your expectations to goad everyone into arguing about the ptwp instead of seeing the subtler message that Friendship was the one thing the followers of the LoL are actually looking for (Arya and friends). -Dave and Dan at some point.

This argument baffles me, honestly. A show doesn't have to be realistic, true, but it has to respect its own rules, it's about coherence. If the show establishes that pigs fly, it's okay, we can accept it but if suddenly, they don't anymore, it doesn't make sense. Saying that a fantasy show doesn't need narrative coherence because dRAgOnS shows a lack of knowledge in terms of storytelling. It's not even about what the show is popular for. Of course you miss these things, it's basically what the show promised you and ignored in the latter seasons.

S8 subverted my expectations

I hate the argument that because fantasy elements exist, nothing needs to make sense. I guess we can’t praise any movie for good storytelling because none of them are 1:1 with reality, and making sense is just them doing extra unneeded filler.

The Winterfell subplot was the worst! The Machiavellian Littlefinger who came from nothing and schemed his way to the top, went down like a punk. What drives me crazy is people acting like Sansa outsmarted Littlefinger, when in reality she didn't have to figure anything out. She was just handed all the answers by Bran.

@@janhavi1977 littlefinger was my favourite character in the show. Scheming, conniving, cunning person from nowhere who pulled all the strings without anyone knowing. And then he just sits around and dies like an absolutely clueless idiot. His death was really a metaphor for how they killed off everything smart in the show.

I still can't believe the number of people who defended it at the time. It was easily the worst thing I had ever watched in my life and most people I knew were saying it was awesome

Uh, no? We don't know that for sure. The show never clarifies how they figured it out or when. When I watched it with my dad, he thought the implication was that they'd been faking it, at least the final time they fight before the "trial" of Littlefinger. And yeah, nothing in the show contradicts that interpretation.

The bad season 8 episodes were crashing the landing and so produced more devastation. But this was D&D doing a barrel roll for the lolz on the way down. Totally pointless.

Maybe fourth or fifth worst....season 8 has so many contenders.

Nothing beats the long night, the bells and the iron throne. This episode was at the worst awful writing. Those 3 episodes on the other hand make every character and story arc in the show pointless. This episode was contrived as hell but at least it led to the stakes of the white walker attack being raised. Not defending it or anything, it’s still garbage

They have access to giant flying reptiles apparently capable of crossing continents in an hour, reptiles that spend most of the day doing nothing but fly around dragon stone. Jon could have gone and gotten his corpse and been back in time to simp to his Aunt.

Yeah, but if I was going beyond the wall with that kind of rough terrain and possibly surprise deep snow at places I don't know if I'd bring a horse.

I would also argue that his personal experiences also make him more conflicted by allowing Arya to train with Syrio. Arya clearly resembles Lyanna to him, and he doesn't know whether his actions have made it more or less likely that she'll end up the same way.

This implies that her learning how to defend herself was at least a factor if not the main reason why he allowed it in the first place whereas in the show it's more of him indulging her.

You're absolutely right, the lack of hats is ridiculous for a cold climate. Around 70% of the heat your body lets off escapes through your head, so you'd think covering it would be a high priority for these people.

They took our drunk pink priest and made him a fucking stoner. That said, Thoros has one of my favorite arcs of any of the tertiary characters in the books. He starts out one of the youngest sons of a Myrish merchant family chock-a-block with sons so for lack of any other real prospects he joins the church of Rholly, which is in itself interesting because we normally see ex-slaves orbiting around the church. He travels to Westeros to try and convert the pyromaniac king Aerys (and I think the subtext is that they sent him on a fool’s errand in the first place) - not only does he fail but he loses his faith. He instead replaces his faith with fighting and carousing and becomes slovenly and drunk, yet still clings to the appearance of Rh’llor as an identity thing, using cheap parlor tricks to play the part of the “carousing red priest”. He ingratiated himself with the new king and becomes quasi-legendary during the Greyjoy rebellion. Then, after magic comes back and he’s sent off into an ambush, he has a “come to Rh’llor” moment and has his faith reaffirmed. Much like Beric, Thoros gains new life and new zeal and believes in his faith and in his mission, his fat melting away as he fights his guerrilla war. Most authors would end a tertiary character’s arc right there but GRRM takes it further. (Minor spoilers for those who still care at this point) - Thoros still has his faith, but when we see him next Beric is dead and used his gift of life against Thoros’ wishes, reanimating the revenant of Lady Stoneheart. As something of an XO to the new leader, the entire brotherhood takes a darker turn and Thoros turns with it, delivering one of the best lines in the entire series “Some knights are dark and full of terrors, m’lady. War makes monsters of us all.”

I think they stopped caring about the show once they did the Red Wedding. In some of their earlier interviews and episode commentaries they hype it up so much as the one reason why they wanted to adapt the books, and how it was such an important moment for them (not just the general plot of the story).

@@sealy_99 Yes - after the Red Wedding it was all about getting that zombear rather than telling the story. Certainly zombear is the reason why Season 7 was expanded to 13 episodes and split in two - so there was enough time for this nonsense, and the budget for the zombear.

@@sihollett I'm not arguing they changed everything post Red Wedding to get a zombie polar bear, simply that they stopped caring as much and didn't put in the same amount of effort adapting GRRM's work. Instead they decided to write new inferior material to replace the text because they thought they were good enough to be able to do that. And guess what? They weren't good enough. After deciding to split ASOS into two seasons, they chose to squeeze AFFC and ADWD into one season, cutting out parts from virtually every character's story, not including some at all, or changing it completely like the Dorne mess. That was their creative choice. They thought they could do without the books and go their own way, and so stopped caring about adapting, which they were good at. There were always going to be 8 seasons, not 7, once they split ASOS into 2. They easily could have gone for 9 or 10, although I admit that would have created other challenges. But Season 7 wasn't expanded to 13 episodes. Seasons 7 and 8 were cut from 20 down to 13.
