stuff can happen eventually..... I used my winch to self recover for the 1st time after getting it.. 15+ years earlier ! As well as extreme conditions that required great off road tires.& 4wd..to where my provisions depended on it ! Give it a decade, or 2 or 3 or 4..
1:30 ..i love how he puts this... i have somewhat of an obsession with tires, i love the different looks, compounds, grip capabilities ect .. i find it fascinating
I use BF Goodrich exclusively. Some of our vehicles in the middle east had them. If these tires survive Africa and the middle east, you know they are good! Solid review Andrew!
We have similar conditions in Australia. I have been running these tyres on a Nissan Patrol. When new they were the best tyres I ever had. However age has not been kind. Although they still work well in dry conditions, when it rains they are not happy. I have had experiences that would turn my hair grey, if it wasn't already. They just let go in the wet. The only time I have had a worse experience is when driving a 3 wheel car in snow with road tyres. Maybe if Covid hadn't kept us indoors I would have worn them out quicker. On that basis they might have still been the best, but at 3 years old even with remaining tread they have to go.
I put these on my 2010 Toyota Tacoma, Love them !! I do mostly road driving, but I like to go back roads fishing, hunting, camping or just for fun drive haha and they have been great, not one complaint.
I just bought a 2003 Hilux 3.0TD SR5 with 220km on the clock this week and it has these tires on it. I knew nothing about them so I looked them up and found this video. I'm pretty stoked to see this dudes passion for BF Goodrich All-Terrain KO2's I can tell you!
I have these on my 2015 4runner running 20's stock because its the Limited Edition and I gotta say that they do what they need off roading 4x4 and quite and smooth on the highways! no complaints and I get a lot of great compliments from strangers about how great they look too! thanks again for making great tires!
Your enthusiasm for this tire in the final minute has sold me on buying these. I was looking for a set of winter or AT tires for my 4x4 truck for the snowy months. Ultimately, I'm going with the K02s because I feel the AT tire better value since it can be used in multiple applications instead of just the winter.
On my 4th set of tires for my 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, and I've tried four different types. The first set was the last gen BFG AT which worked very well on road, and decent off road in sand and rock, but had very weak sidewalls and were punctured several times through the tread and sidewall (had at least one patch in every tire, including spare). These lasted about 50,000 miles. Tired of performing repairs, the next set was the Goodyear with Kevlar. These were phenomenal off road, and I never really worried about trail damage, but they were very heavy, and terrible on road (not to mention expensive). The traction was such that any minute change in the road surface and the Jeep would pull in that direction. And they only lasted about 35,000-40,000 miles. Third set was Pro-Comp Xtreme AT. Again, good on road and smooth, lasted about 50,000 miles, but compared to the Goodyears, off-road traction and overall capability was reduced dramatically. Now on these BFG AT KO2, which I've seen nothing but positive remarks about, and had to wait over a week for them to be shipped in as they are so popular. So far, very happy with them. Very nice on road, very quiet (which now allows me to hear all the other noised my Jeep is making :-/ ). Haven't hit anything really rough outdoors yet but if they compare to the first set of BFGs I had then I think I will be ok as long as I air-down (which wasn't as required with the Goodyears, but necessary for ride comfort due to the ultra-stiff kevlar sidewalls). Again, thank you for your videos. I've watched them all several times over the past couple years, and you truly inspire the adventurer spirit. One day I hope to get to Southern Africa (hopefully with my Jeep) to see and do these same amazing things, and maybe take enough video for my own show lol.
Pity I can not show a video about my H3 tackling Finnish forest with those same tires. We do not have desert sand but we have very nasty tree stumps that can and will puncture lesser tires. My old Blazer -79 has an earlier version of the same tread, and it used to have even earlier version of BFG AT:s. As we have some kind of winter here in Finland, all new versions have been even better than previous ones when it comes to snow traction. The first ones were more than good, but that latest version is practically a proper winter tire. I also have a Jeep GC ZJ, that has re-treaded tires that have exactly the same tread pattern as the first version had. The tire carcasses are not as tough as BFG's, but they have lasted too. The tread pattern is the magic here. Now, some may wonder why I chose those tires and trucks. The truth is that here at Arctic Circle the car or truck must be reliable and not stupidly expensive. The tires must take the punishment. If you are stranded here in the woods it may be dangerous in the winter. Toyotas are best but stupidly expensive here. Land Rovers and Range Rovers used to be good but not any more. G Mercs are too fragile, they just did not take it, I tried. Old Chevys can take it and are cheap. H3 is far better off road than it's reputation, just like the H2, but H2 is too cube for forest use. Jeep is almost as unreliable as British 4x4:s, but it is a cheap option that is good enough off road, excellent in the winter. I have also tried the Goodyear Wrangler, but it did not last long. It wears out astonishingly fast. Coopers were adequate, just like Bridgestones. BFG:s are the best so far.
Good review! I've got a 2000 XJ, I put a set of these in 235x75 on it and I couldn't be happier. I'm very impressed with the winter performance. I feel as confident with these on ice and snow as any winter tire I've used.
I can relate. I live in Africa with a holiday house in a remote place. I was sick and tired of punctures. I’ve now moved to BFG’s and kicking myself for not doing so earlier ! I didn’t expect them to be so quiet, but they have added to fuel consumption.
I recently changed from 265/75/16 Load range E KO2s to 235/85/16 Load range E KO2s (same diameter) 40psi on both, on my 2015 Toyota Tacoma TRD OFFROAD. WOW what a difference, never going back to the wider tires. It was like I got 20 more horsepower and the mud and snow /ice performance improved. The on road tracking and braking was better as well as an increase in mpg because of less rolling resistance. I think us Americans have been bamboozeld by the industry that BIGGER/WIDER is better. Thanks for you videos. Pizza Cutters Rule LOL. Though I have to admit BIG tires look good at the Mall.
Hi Andrew, just read your blog on "Minds narrowed by brand loyalty" I have recently become a 1st time owner of a small 4x4 (too scared to mention brand lol) :) & subsequently watched a lot of your RU-vid videos & gained a wealth of knowledge on a variety of subject matters. Bravo on your channel! Anyway I never ever felt you were biased toward any brand really, you tell it like it is and like this review of the BFG KO2 you give your opinion based on your experiences with the tyres. Anyway just wanted to say keep on doing what you are doing and dont let the exceptions change you.
I've only run BFGs for last 20+ years. Load E and can tell you they are not made like they used to be. They are impossible to balance and are all out of round. Closer to egg shape than a circle. Try this test-jack your wheel 1/8" off the pavement and spin the tire. You will see what I mean. This summer with 60% tread left my KO2 all began separating, cracking and developing a warp. Sears manager called BFG with me standing next to him. He verified we've been chasing this issue for over a year, they were aired correctly and rotated and BFG didn't want to cooperate with very much of a proration. On July 4th it happened. I had a blowout while on a curving country road. It was terrifying. Only after threatening to sue did BFG offer to help by charging $400 to replace the set. It's been three months and already the whabble is back on brand new tires.
Started keeping in 1995 and did a lot of jamborees with mark smith and during that year sometime I switched to the old mud terrains which were noisy on road so I switched to all terrains which were outstanding then switched to Toyota tucks and now 2018 I procured a sweet 2010 FJ and on all my vehicles I've used the all terrains. Currently my FJ ride on all terrain KO 2 and these modern iterations are super quiet on road and really shine off road. I won't use any other tires on my Vehicles period. Thanks for great review and observations
Thank you for a good review. Had BFG KO2’s fitted to my Prado 150 last night by Tyre Plus in Alkhobar, Saudi Arabia. Balancing was not an issue, and I couldn’t make a battery out of the 25 - 70g of lead needed per rim. Smooth on the highway and quiet (I expected more road noise). Can hardly wait to take it back into the desert - last weekend’s trip on the factory fitted Dunlops had me worried; at low pressures with a heavy load and 5 adults in the SUV. Keep up the good work, will fit KO2’s for my 3 month overlanding trip on the USA this summer!
most people that buy something will love it and insist other do too, even if its junk. that being said these tires look like a great improvement over the legendary predecessor. time will tell
Let me be clear, not good in DEEP mud, don't stick it to the running boards with these tires and exspect to get out easily. If your going very muddy places, a MUD TIRE is needed. But muddy trails and wet trails, they work very well. I'm in love.
I have these type tires on my Dodge Ram 1500 for 8 years now. Something that he doesn’t bring up is these things are AMAZING in snow. Never had a problem in ice or blizzards.
Good review Andrew, I always like hearing your opinions on stuff and this is another good one to keep. What would be super would be for you to get a bunch of AT tires and make a group test of them with the same vehicle in the same terrain conditions! Most of what we see online is often biased so an honest and independent review with current tires in the market would be great! Keep up the good work!!!
I went roughly 43K Miles with T/A KO's on an F-250 with 30% Off-Road use. I will be shoeing the same F-250 with the new A/T K02's tomorrow. I can't wait to see what those baby's have to offer....feeling pumped!
+Kendall Kendall You Can't Beat these tires they wear like Iron I put Them on my 2005 Tacoma 4x4 back in 2007 they must have had over 50,000 miles on them just replaced them Today with the same thing . the wear Factor of these tires is outstanding
BFGoodrich is an American tire company. Originally part of the industrial conglomerate Goodrich Corporation, it was acquired in 1990 (along with Uniroyal, then The Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Company) by the French tire maker Michelin.
I remember old days 4x4ing with many friends and their many diferent cars (Jeep, Land Rover, Toyota...) all of them with the old model of BF Goodrich, the KO, and they were always complaining about sidewalls, always broken sidewalls, but only in one terrain... mixing mud and some ->small rocks
AGREED. I had the KOs on my last truck and the KO2s on this one. They claim 11% better in mud...yup not much more but not much less. The are slightly quieter, mileage didn't suffer much, the sidewall is SO NICE. Love the vid man
Used the old ko's on all my trucks for about 5 years until I had a blow out at about 70mph, vehicle spun and the rolled over 3 times. no more bfg's for me. Saw a review comparo article on the overland journal and they highlighted coopers discovery as the best mix of pavement, sand, dirt, and rock. Have those now and they're much quieter and even cheaper by 25%.
I have been considering new tires for my 98 Range Rover and was looking at the K02's and Yokohama Geolander G015. I think I will go with the K02's as they are 10 ply and have a more agresive tread pattern. Good to hear lots of people, including Andrew are happy with them. $229 CDN for 255 70 16 in British Columbia so a bit pricey.
Thanks for the video, Andrew. You might want to mention that you are sponsored by BF Goodrich Tyres (Michelin South Africa) as stated on the patreon page and mentioned in your other videos.
I agree, I just swapped out my old Michelin atv's for these on my f-150. I work in West Texas in some pretty rough terrain, lots of rocks, sand, potholes, shitty gravel highways and roads. My old Michelins after 50k miles looked like they had been through a cheese grater. First day and I instantly felt much better grip and even more smooth rides over small potholes. I can't explain it but I feel safer with these things, every gravel, pothole infused hill I go on I feel like they are saying: "fuck you, is that all you got?" very quite and smooth on the highway, I love these tires.
I have had BFG 'S on my Cruisers for years, on my old 79 series I have never put the spare wheel on the vehicle, never had a flat, out of the last set four never rotated them I got 97000 kms , now I have put on the 79 the new KO2S and hopefully they are as good as the KO'S
Everything you said has been my experience as well on many different vehicles. I already knew how good they were on the highway but the newest pleasant surprise for me was using them on a 8000lb. (Curb weight) diesel Ford Excursion they still wear like iron. I don't know how they do it but they are well worth the 20% premium they generally demand.
Hi Andrew I've had BF Goodrich ko2's on my Defender for ages and never lost grip or traction they are the best all terrain tyre, im only kicking my self for not waiting a month for these new tyres to come out ah well next time then...
How do these do in the rain? For me this tire going spend most it life on bad highways, mud and gravel. Snow ever now and then. Have horrific wildfires here. Have had to evacuate 2 time this year. Need a tire that can take any terrain and not have punctures during evacuations.
Very heavy tire.. tough tire but going to take a hit on gas mileage and performance. For gravel roads and off road where probability of punctures high makes sense. Otherwise
OK, so I just put them on in time for our recent minor snow. They seem to do pretty well. We'll see how the winter progresses. Good to hear that you got 50K out of yours. I was a little concerned since they only start with 15/32 tread depth. I am a little annoyed that I had to drop to a 17" wheel however.
Have had these on my Landcruiser for a few thousand k's. I live in remote central Australia...three hours on dirt roads to the nearest bitumen. So far so good. many times better than my Mickey Thompson Muddies (not surprisingly).
I just fitted a set to my Pajero, damned expensiive with the 18 inch wheels, almost $500 each in Australia, but pleased with them. On road, I am experiencing about 5% more fuel consumption compared to the Goodyear AT20's they replaced. Also, a bit of road noise by comparison, but my Wife does not notice, and I don't find it annoying at all. They have made the vehicle handling, with a 2" suspension lift, significantly better than it was with the Goodyear AT20. No off-road trial yet...this weekend...but much more precise steering on-road.
+Jim's Adventure TV 5% is a lot. Pressure issues because of the harder sidewall? Just a thought. I found them extremely quiet, although did no direct comparison. Let me know how well they do in the wet.
Just put these on my 07 Tahoe with 20 inch MB TKO's. Everywhere I go I get compliments. On top of that, they ride extremely well and smooth. They're pretty quiet for an off road all terrain tire. I had coppers on before, but they could never get balance correctly. A lot of vibration at high speeds on the coopers. These tires look and performs extremely well.
Just had a puncture of my 6 month old 35 inch BFG AT KO2 when driving on gravel roads for about 20 km. I was surprised and disappointed having this problem with almost new tyres as I always had good experiences with these tyres. Hope this was an incident as I want tough AT’s on my Lexus LX470.
Regarding fuel consumption i would have to say that they stay true to vehicle MFG. ratings at least to the experience I had with my VW Amarok even being fitted with bigger and wider tyres doing the corrections because of measurements, I am a efficiency freak so i measure tire pressure and fuel consumption side by side.
thank you for the review. I just purchased these for my LC 100. I use to run the previous version in my Jeep wrangler and they were tough. I was close to pick up nitto Terra grappler but you tipped me back to bfg
I have a 2015 silverado with 285-70-17 brgko2, E rating, awesome tires, after 174,000. Km, 120,000. Km on my first set , not a flat yet, off road they were great, no gumbo mud though, my only complaint is that they are bad on ice.
Really love your videos Andrew. I do wonder if BFG has improved the KO2. I am a 30 year vehicle tech, and the number of KO2s that I have seen with tread separation over the years almost outnumbers all other tires combined. We used to call them the separators. They seem to do well for the first 50 percent of their tread life, then start shaking and bulging. I love the tires though, but would never put them on anything I own.
These tires looked awesome on my Tacoma, however, 1 of them started showing cracks on the side wall. Soon after that, yeap it blew out on me. Maybe I just got a lemon? The other 3 held up great.
Now they just need to bring them out in more (better) sizes... I was all set to replace my 3rd set of KO1's with the new KO2's but with no 255/85R16 or 33/10.50x15's they're just never going to be an option for me and I'm "stuck" with the old style. I'd LOVE to see a 34x10.50x15 and 16 for my Diesel swapped Hilux (would give my PERFECT final gearing) and they MAKE a 34x10.50x17... but no "tall skinny" sizes for the 15" and 16" rim crowd. I've been a huge fan of the KO1 for the same reasons you list and I've run them hard both here in the Pacific NW US and in NE Australia for years a set but... the new KO2's are just HTAT much better as you say. Same winning recipe for those of us who travel hard country but with the added benefit of even better mud traction (here in Oregon we have a LOT of water most of the year and LOTS of mud and the KO2's we tested on a Tacoma were pretty awesome and certainly better then any AT tire I've ever driven), less road noise and more side-wall protection/traction. They're just a totally improved tire and it's sad that they're filling the OE and Mall-Crawler after-market crowd before the make tires for the users who gave the tires their name and credibility in the first place...
He's right though.. I love my ko2's on my 110 tdi after having bfgs on my last defender... Likewise I love the goodyear eagles on my car. Good tyres are things you heavily grow to love!
Can you do a video on selecting the right tire size for a US market 100 series and if any considerations need to be made with AHC on the later 100 series land cruisers and lx470 models.
Thanks ASPW @4xoverland - I'm planning a Cairo to Cape Town trip via Eastern African countries and wanted to know how much I'll have to deal with muddy tracks and whether Mud Terrain would be a better option even with the trade off in noise and fuel economy? Many thanks.
i am thinking about getting bf all terrain ko2. on my old truck had the ko tires for 10 years. bought a new one and the stock tires suck driving in the rain.
living in East Anglia.. England , I have always wanted these for my Toyota 2012 Rav4. Big chunky looks , top quality and yes they look brilliant ! My driving to be honest is 90% on road.... 10% off road on mostly gravel or sandy tracks in Suffolk , or the odd muddy byway at weekends. I know these are the best !. But I do have to say they are quite noisy ( I live with it , and got used to it ) They are wareing quite fast though, and because of the reinforced side walls ' and ' my Rav4's stiff suspension my ride quality over bad road surfaces can be intolerable!! But...... at the moment I'm suffering it as another different set is more money. So overall , would I buy them again for a Rav4... possibly not. Next time it'l be Yokohama geolander A/T as I had these on my 2002 Rav4 a few years back. Much quieter, and smoother ride. Just my thoughts , Andrew... you have a brilliant Utube channel along with Rhonny. All the best !....cheers.
I'm a hugh fan of the BF Goodrich A/T tires i've tried different brands in the past' but i always went back to the BFG's i have a 1996 chevy silverado 2500 and a GMC serria 2500 both 4 wheel drive i just love the ride quality and water release and when we have ice there the best as for mud that's the only thing i don't get in much but my 1984 Bronco 2 4x4 has the BFG mud tires but for me the BFG's the best so i will have to look into the ko2 tires they look great. With that said i'm not bashing other tires i have friends who use Cooper and Goodyear and MasterCraft and they have no problems with them.
Gary Peacock i work in tire shop i have them on my truck i like them but i think they are going to wear out faster then the ko's the last ko's i had on my mom's suv lasted a long time over 60k miles we even sold it with those tires i think the new ko2 are softer for snow and ice have mud mk2 on my discovery love them so just as a precaution don't expect a lot of mileage out of the ko2
Thanks for the review. I enjoy your videos. I'm about to get new tires for my 4Runner. I was going to get Load Range E for the extra sidewall plys. Is that what you are using? I do most of my overloading in the Nevada (USA) desert where there are rocks and pokey things. Even rockier than the Mojave Road from your recent video. Thanks, -Mike
4x Overland - were you running the load range C or E? it seems they may be phasing out the C as most places stock the E in my size but have to order the C at a much higher cost. just wondering if you had experience with the E
Unfortunately they stopped making the ko alongside the ko2. I found the ko (the old type of bfg all-terrains) to be superior in rain, ice and snow. Wish they still made them in 33x12.50r15. The new ko2 is shorter, wider and has less tread depth than the ko. Just a heads up to anyone looking at these
This doesn't make sense as the KO was not snow rated, and the KO2 now is. All other reviews I have read say how much better the KO2 is in snow compared to its predecessor.
