Bhagwati is around 50 and is married with children. She lives in village Thapalia Mehragaon in Naukuchiatal..some 25 Kms. from Nainital, Kumaon, Uttarakhand. She works as a house keeper for a big house....she has cows at home in the village. During and after monsoon season, she comes down to cut grass as fodder for her cows...fresh grass as fodder is good for better yield of milk. She can sell some milk to earn a a little.
During severe cold and hot summer months she has to buy fodder from a market that is 30 Kms. from her village..she pays for the cartage....all her savings get spent.
Project "Bridging Gaps" launched by FORMEDIA is already planning to plant 27000 saplings in 27 villages of the lake catchment area during the coming monsoon season of 2014. In a few years, Bhagwati will get fodder for her cows closer to her home...she will also get fuel-wood to cook food and heat water for a bath...all this without destroying the fragile ecosystem of the lake region and ofcourse reduced stress for her.
