Bi-Turbo Audi Timing Belt Replacement From Hell

In this video I will show you how to remove the timing belt, roller, tensioner, water pump and Camshaft and Crankshaft Seals on a C5 Audi with the 2.7L Bi Turbo Engine. But this procedure should be very similar to all Audi and VW cars with the 2.8L Engine as well. You'll need some special tools for this job like the crankshaft holding bolt and camshaft alignment locking tool.

1.8t timing belts are easy on the audis give that a shot first then youll see what i mean. Front bumper cover comes off and support comes loose tho....

I always have the impression that Audis are not really designed or planned before they start building them, it looks like they improvise while they build it, sort of "will this fit here, no, let us try it this way"

yeah good time to do the t-stat and the top seals of the motor (valve cover, cam seals, cam plugs, adjuster seals). It's not too bad. Follow directions and have the necessary tools.

Not really, buy normal engines and don't buy the "Premium brands". Like Lexus, Audi, BMW, etc. They always have more stuff around that can fail on you and if you buy the big engines they will be hell to maintain. They are meant for people that don't care about maintenance and just bring it into the shop. I mean it's a biTurbo 5 cylinder 2.7! Get a normal 1.6 VW Golf, 1.3 Toyota Corolla or 1.6 Ford Focus. You'll be thanking yourself and your wallet!

First it's a V6 2.7L and this maintenance is done at 60 thousand miles. These engines average 300,000 miles if the maintenance is done. timing/water pump at 60K, oil changes, spark plugs, filters.

60k is a little early, anywhere between 60 and 90 is probably alright, with 75 being the target.

When I did mine, I just pulled the lock carrier completely off to save my back. It's not totally required but a bit less stressful than hunching over it. I skipped the the bolt in the crank and had no issues on the scan tool, but you do have to mark it and watch for movement. Great video.

Try to change Santa Fe timing belt, then you'll see what timing belt replacement from hell is. lol That thing is absolute ridiculousness. Factory manual calls for removing the engine. I'd rather roll her down the hill with a rag in the gas tank than go through that insanity if I'm perfectly honest. And it's a Hyundai on top of it all...

That's the type of mechanic work I like to do. Very methodical, in depth, attention to detail oriented, focus driven work that makes the day go by quick (when things go smooth of course lol) it's almost therapeutic... kinda like when You built Legos as a kid, following the directions, finding the right peices and super into it , by the time you were done hours went by but it only felt like minutes.

I've used your videos for doing all that and more. I had an A6 C5 that I had to change the timing belt, tensioners, water pump, thermostat, cam seals, and crank seal. Eventually I also had to change the cylinder head due to a broken camshaft. I rebuilt the new heads myself and lapped the valves by hand. I won't do that again. Lol Keep up the great videos.

Many older Ford Explorer Engines are German made, even have E-torx fasteners.. They have timing chains in the back(like some Audis) and you have to pull the engine to service the guides. They often fail.

Not the front transverse brake pipe though. You need to remove the engine for that unless you want to break something.

good videos. I like how far you have gone so far with your project and taking the time to explain the process every helpful. I have a 01 2.8 and replace the engine twice. Hopefully you get around to the pistons procedure. My cylinder 4 zero compression so deciding to change engine instead of doing the work but with a video like yours i would have more confident for next time. reasons PES G2 installed. car modified to my taste so not getting rid of it yet.

Watching this is better that playing the memory game I used to play as a child. How many parts, in exact order, can you remember to put back exactly. Haha! After watching your quality DIY automobile maintenance and repair videos, I have a new found appreciation for what you and other Audi mechanics do. This video also tells me to never buy one of these Audi's ever. Nice car I know, but the engine service is just too painful; and it's painful to watch. I hope my next car is electric with fewer moving parts and much easier and lesser mechanical maintenance in my opinion. Keep up the good work producing quality videos. Straight and honest talk. Good job 👍 I have the same engine, I remember the first time that I change the timing belt it tooks me almost all day. By the way you forget something, you didn't cover the oil dipstick hole when you open the water pump, I believe that you make an oil change after the timing belt so it's fine.

INHO this is UNDER engineered! With the part being so integrated, it should be a chain rather than a wearable belt.

Good point and understood. However my caddy 3.6 V6 with dual overhead cams are driven with chains. The serpentine belt is for peripheral's such as alternator, water pump, AC etc. The belt takes 5 min. to change out. I don't hear a whisper. I don't know why, but I don't hear any chain "noise" as compared to the older cars we knew.

After some thought, as an old mechanic, the reason is probably because today's chains have automatic tensioners that preclude slack and slippage (hence noise). Same as today's serpentine belts vs the old "V" belts!

Just buy an older model. 80ies Audi five bangers for example. With China being open to the world market you can fit all the gagdets you want to older cars. Gps Double Dinn, electric heated seats etc

Doing my timing belt and my marks dont match on the pulley, its up but the bigger holes are even with each other on the cams.. car runs fine before. Do i just have to keep rotaing until they match up?

Great video and Wow a lot of work. It's looks like a total tear down. If it's all like that then it's better off to rebuild the whole motor because whenever the next problem comes in same shit all over again gonna happen. Rebuild the whole motor with all new parts and won't worry about it for another 3-5 years. This car wouldn't be my top choice at all after seeing how many parts has to come off before replacing a new part smh.

Yay audis! Btw that coolant hose at the thermostat housing is shot. The one end is very swollen and looks like it spent a bunch of time oily. Pretty much any time you see a swollen end on a hose it needs to be replaced as it's a sure sign of impending failure.

If you use your smartphone and take a photograph of the item that you're taking off the engine you know exactly how it goes back on. And with most smartphones you can leave a memo by messaging yourself what size bolts and screws go with each item. this is especially helpful when you're relining things which sometimes get knocked out alignment during reassembly.

Timing belt on the EJ255/57 is about the same pain in the ass. When it comes to head gaskets none come close to the pain an EJ is. Really gotta love these cars to wrench on them.

Um, no. The EJ255 timing belt is a piece of cake compared to most cars, and it's especially easier than this unnecessarily complex Audi. I know as I did the tb, tensioners, and water pump on my LGT a few years ago. Other than the fact that a tool to hold the camshaft sprockets in place would have made the job easier, I found it was a pleasure to work on.
