I'm really glad you are addressing this. I recently had a coaching conversation with a client of mine who is legally blind from birth. I realized that I was using words that appeal more to my visual modality, such as look, see, and so forth. I then apologized to her for using those words as it may not have been the most appropriate. She then told me that it was no problem at all as she was really used to it. I'm glad we ended up having that conversation because it helped to create a more comfortable space for sharing. What I'm learning from that and what you just spoke about is helping to open my eyes (visual!) to biases.
This is brilliant! I love that you had the conversation and recognized the sited bias. And, I am sure your client is super used to it, as the majority of the world see with their eyes and thereby the default is "see what I mean?" "what does it look like?" It takes courage to A. recognize and then B. acknowledge the bias. A beautiful example. Thank you for sharing it @debralevey602
I love this!!! Listening to the clients language and opening up the questions really resonates with me. "What does that even mean to them" is exactly right!! I am really glad you addressed this because we DO all have bias, but might not reflect on it that often. Hate the idea of listening to my coaching, but you are absolutely right in that it will help me recognize bias I may have and not even recognize! Thank you!
Thank you very much for the video Lyssa, it's quite amazing that you always give me answers to questions that are running through my mind. It is indeed true that in our Western culture we always want to be "useful and efficient", forgetting about the actual and real personality and needs of the coaching client. Thank you for emphatically reminding me how important it is to take a step back and focus on the customer!
