Parsing apps for biblical Greek are an important part of learning Greek today. If you’re not using a Parsing app, you’re really making Biblical Greek far more difficult than it needs to be. If you use a parsing app rigorously, you’ll master the language so much faster! In this video, we’ll take a look at the parsing apps on the market today, and consider the pros and cons of each. What we’ll find is that there is a lot of room for parsing apps to grow and develop, and so I’ll offer my wish list of features in the ultimate parsing app at the end of this video.

I like the "biblical greek dictionary" app because it lets me change the order of the tables/buttons into the order used in Duff (Thats the book that we are using).

Darryl, you're making my greek learning seem effortless. I'm only 1 week in and this app coupled with flashdeluxe is amazing. Thank you.

I’m jealous…. I started yesterday and am still struggling with just learning the alphabet and how some of the letters look like hieroglyphics 😮

Since I did most of my NT Greek study on my own, nobody told me about parsing. I began doing it by myself while reading the NT text! It could be because I grew up doing something similar in standard Arabic grammar (e'raab إعراب).

Again an outstanding video. One minor gripe: It would help if you would put links to where the apps could be purchased. On your rec, I just bought Trainer.

Daryl, the perfect parsing apps would list the attributes in the same order my professor uses. for a participle that's Gender, Case, Number, Tense, Mood.

Or even in a customisable order to suit various teaching styles. 🙃

What I may have missed in this video I didn't catch is what app you can put a Greek word in, and it parses it for you in the form it was entered in. @bma

I would like the ability to select a single word and be tested on parsing that word. Eg with parsegreek, you select one or more chapters of a text book and it will test you on all the words in that chapter, but I would like the ability just to consider a single word.

The real way to master NT Greek, and the most rigorous programs of and advisors in biblical studies will nudge you in this direction, is to master Attic Greek. Once you’ve done that, NT Greek will be a pleasant walk through the park-child’s play, really. Formal training in NT Greek is really just for future clerics and amateurs.
@bma
@bma 2 года назад
and for those who want to read the New Testament ;)

@@bma, no additional training in Koine is necessary, and would only get in the way. Once you master Attic, you can fly through the NT. After just a summer six-week introduction to Attic, plus one semester of Attic prose translation, I could translate all of Galatians in one class period. In NT translation classes in graduate school, students who had only studied Koine were taking 3 1/2 hours to translate a passage I had translated in 10 minutes. I was utterly incredulous and beside myself when I found out how slowly these students were trudging through something like Koine Greek. If it were Plato or Demosthenes, sure, but the NT?! Give me a break. No one should be approaching Ancient Greek that way, if you ask me, which you didn’t.

I've been using one called "Biblical Greek Dictionary" that as parsing inside it. I think the interface is a little cleaner/nicer. But I think it might be iPhone only.

Another parsing app, from Australia, is Bible Vocab+.
@bma
@bma 4 года назад
Thanks Ken. While Bible Vocab+ does have some limited parsing in it, it is more a vocab app than a parsing app. It doesn't aim to address quite the same need as these apps. I will review BibleVocab+ at some stage though. Thanks for the suggestion!

For me it's one that would help me solo learn. I'm mostly doing Danny Zacharias' Udemy class, so I'm probably going to go with that one when it is released just to keep things coherent. Though I did try the trial of Paradigms Master Pro a few years back and it seemed pretty good even though I didn't know much at all back then, so it's definitely a serious contender despite the price.

Any of these will help with self-study, particularly when paired with vocab apps. Thanks watching!

I wondered if you were aware of the parsing program that Murray Vasser has?? It is a subscription-based program which goes verse by verse and he posts one verse at a time. It is tied in with daily dose of Greek. He also does this in the Hebrew.

Parsegreek needs to hurry with the android I cant wait!!! Ginoskos is okay but most exercises contain material not appropriate (nonindicative moods) for what you have learned so far, for those self-taught working through Mounce's grammar. It's killing me. My verb parsing game is in an SOS situation right now, and it feels like the resources i have available are so limited :( my computer is so slow that it is worthless, so I am stuck with mobile-only, for now

Thanks for your comment! If you're reading, try parsing words as you read, then look them up in Logos or Accordance to see if you were right. This will help while you're without an effective alternative. 😀

First :The price of Trainer is not just a little bit cheaper. At $25 it is less than 1/4 the price of the other pc program. Second: I would like to see an app that can really grow with you. The ability to turn off everything and start from the most lowest level. Like is this a noun or something else. Then add a second part of Speach say noun or verb or so something else. Idealy, it would be link to a lesson that teaches the concept then lets you practice, then test.

Nicholas Wilson ask how long it took for my purchase of trainer to be activated by email: it was a few hours but this appears to be a one man show so I would advise patients. Who ever this person is did a great job in writing the program.

I thought it would be out by now, but I took a look in the app store after I uploaded this video and found it has not yet been released. It should be soon, and it will be an upgrade to the v1 app.
