In this video, I share the gear that has worked and some that hasn't, on my solo, self-supported bicycle tour across Canada. I speak about the tent and the sleeping system. I mention tents that leaked and had problems: 2021 MSR Hubba Hubba NX and the Sea to Summit Telos TR2. I also share my experience with the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL Bikepacking tent.

A major problem with leakages in many 'lightweight' tents is a mesh inner. Condensation drops just fall straight through, and in the dry such tents are prone to dust and sand blown in by the wind. I always prefer tents with a full fabric inner. Currently I use the Exped Vela1 and a Hilleberg Nallo 2GT. These are excellent all-weather tents. I may change to the Hilleberg Akto for a 1-person use.

When the weather is right for condensation, there is little any tent will do to prevent dripping. If you like the tent and you have an actual leak, some seam sealant will fix it. But there are some places you can place the tent to minimize condensation: on a ridge with more breeze, away from streams and lakes, not under a tree, and avoid grass. Also, consider sleeping with your rain fly door open when not raining, of course. In the summer I am now using my REI quarter dome 1 tent. Most nights I don't use a rain fly. In the winter I use my four season tent: Black Diamond Bibler Eldorado which is not appropriate for most people, but is among the greatest tents ever made.

I know, it's not for everyone, but for me a 3x3 lightweight tarp (with only one sewn ridgeline = easy to seal if needed), then bugnet inner, works perfectly. BUT every time you need it, you need 2 points of attachment for your paracord ridge line, so perfectly if there are 2 trees close enough to do it. If not, you could use a front tire to make a tunnel tent. No condensation whatsoever - but temperatures and wind could be an issue - if tarp pitched in A config. But again it''s a tarp, so it's very configurable. Also it's perfect shelter for sleeping in hammock under.

Hi Agnieszka, Thanks for posting this! My wife and I have loved the Nemo 3P Losi tent for back country canoe trips and I use that very roomy (3 person is overkill but that's what I have) tent for bikepacking/ touring. No problems with rain or condensation but our first fly had Velcro tabs where the glue came off. They were great at replacement and the new one is better designed and perfect. I use the extra room for gear/panniers etc. On a downpour day, I can read out the storm, if I have time. Enough room for different positions. I too am a side sleeper.

I have the Copper Spur HV UL2 as well. I had it in a Saskatchewan Rain Storm. It’s is not leaking water. A great tent.

I sheltered about 30KM away from Port Aux Basques, which got significant damage. We did not experience anything like that. Just rough winds and power outage.

I remember when you were going through the Hubba Hubba problems, I was camped at Okanagan Lake when we were chatting about it. At that time I hadn't had any issues. I kept my Hubba Hubba the whole way but did not go without issues. I had one night with bad condensation but thankfully that was it. I also had a few nights where water got in through the bottom somehow but I never really troubleshooted why. I assume that I eventually got a small hole or two. Maybe one day I'll take a close look at it haha. However, I really like the look of that Big Agnes, it will definitely be my next tent purchase! It sucks being back home and at work. Even though we go through so much crap on a trip like this, I loved it and wish I could have continued! I'm hoping to do the Sunshine Coast for my next tour!

Hello! Thanks for watching and for the comment. I think some condensation is to be expected, but when things drip down on you, that's excessive. There was obviously something wrong with that fly and MSR wouldn't troubleshoot, which was a total disappointment. I have 3 weeks left on the trip and I think return to 'regular life' will be tough. I'm in NL now, riding through the island. Your upcoming trip sounds excellent!

Tent condensation is always a problem especially in a cold rain with body heat inside the tent.

I agree that some condensation is always to be expected, but in my case, it was an ongoing problem that got worse and worse and then the fly developed a weird odour. I think there was an issue with the fly, but MSR wasn't helpful.

I purchased a MSR Elixir 2 tent - after over 8000km of touring it has proven to,be an excellent piece of equipment. Doesn’t leak and is simple to set up. I did sew a heavier ‘footprint’ from a construction tarp which may have been a good idea, as it is often quite damp on the underside but no moisture comes through. I had friend in Europe to buy it there and post it to me in Canada. Reason being that in North America they only provide it with an off-white fly. Exactly the same tent in Europe comes with a stealth-friendly dark green one. 5 stars…..

Thank you for sharing your tips and experience with tents and your camping set-up. I will be in the market again for a tent as my new tent is a bit bigger than I like. I have a Geertop tent that I used to cycle across Canada. It is very similar to your Big Agnes in design and was a great deal on Amazon. After five yers the zippers are starting to fail, but I still use it for small stealth camping adventures. Unfortunately that model has been discontinued. It was ver rain proof. On one trip in Colombia, Barbara and I had our shoes stolen that were in the little space between the fly and the inner tent. Depending where you set up, you may not want to store your gear there. Really enjoyed the video and learned something. Got to get me one of those inflatable pillows 😉

Wow! I can't imagine changing 3 tents in the middle of a tour! 4 years ago we purchased a 2 person Woods Tent from Canadian Tire of all places! We have been very impressed with this tent. This tent survived 7 inches of rain in a one hour downpour and had 3-4 inches of water on the ground; and more or less, we were dry!!! This past summer we had a bit of dripping in our tent in a downpour with a strong wind, but that was due to the fact that we did not use the extra tie downs. Once I installed the extra tie downs we were dry! We have been in tents that leak as shown in this video and it is not fun being wet and cool in a downpour! As always, very good review and information.

Thank you for your comment and another tent option. Interestingly, I have a Naturehike Tent that I bought on Amazon and that tent has been bulletproof. Unfortunately I don't like the design, it has one door only, and I wanted to upgrade. Your tent sounds amazing, don't change it. 😉

Sea to Summit makes some really good sleeping bag liners. I highly recommend them. They are made from a hollow core fiber. Like polar bear fur. They are very breathable allowing body moisture to escape and keep you warm and dry. and light weight. they come in several weights. I a warm sleeper and have the lightest weight thermolite . Great summer bag alone or when using a 16oz , 544 gm, down quilt or summer weight sleeping bag adds another layer of warmth. When I add a poly/wool blend Long sleeve Tee shirt to my down quilt and Thermolite liner I'm comfortable at zero F , -23 C. This is the low range with my three season system

The tent I use is a lightfighter 1. It's a one person tent with 2 doors and 2 full vestibules. I love the camo look so I can be hidden when stealth camping. The tent has a good reputation for being water proof. Like you my sleep system is a Big Agnes. I got the Anvil Horn 15 deg. I love the sleeve that holds the air mattress in place. I believe your sidewinder has a similar sleeve.

Thank you for sharing the tent you use, and I'm glad to hear it's waterproof. I'm not sure what you mean by a sleeve that holds the mattress in place - I don't think I have that, I have something for the pillow, but not the mattress. I like the idea of it though.

@@WheelsonaBike On the bottom of the sleeping bag there are two bands of stretchy material. You insert the sleeping pad into the stretchy bands and finish inflating the pad. The pad will be held in place creating a single sleeping bag and pad unit. Kind of like the way a quilt straps to a pad only more secure. I know it's on the Anvil Horn bags and I thought it was also on the sidewinder bags. Maybe not.

@@WheelsonaBike I hiked 160 through the Appalachian Trail. Used a hammock strung between two trees and tarp over string to keep water off. Effective, but hammock uncomfortable 😕, and getting in and out of hammock without flipping out took some doing. I, of course, flipped out a couple times...😄

Nice video. I have had many tents in the 30 years of cycling and camping. I always buy the tents at a discount because the lightwights are so expensive. At the moment i use the MSR Elixer 2 p. I think it has a good price quality ratio. I'm 6.1 feet and this tent is spacious enough. Sometimes there is a problem that a drop leaks when it rains but i I don't think it's an issiue. That's camping!

I would never buy an MSR tent as, even though a lot of people like them, I have heard too many bad things about them from people that I follow online. I currently have and use a Hotcore Mantis 2 tent. I bought the tent for a small camping tent, and since I have it, I've been using it for bike trips as well. It's probably a little heavier and bigger to carry than a lot of two person tents, but it's a good solid tent, has never leaked yet, and I'd rather use what I have at the moment. It fits two small women comfortably, without being a bit tight. I probably would like to buy a lighter weight tent specifically for bike trips in the future. One tent I thought looked cool is the Big Angus Blacktail 2 Hotel Bikepack. I love Luci Lights! I have one and use it on every camping or bike trip for in the tent, and sometimes outside!

Yes, the 2021 model has a lot of negative comments, and issues. I think mine was a lemon, but I wasn't able to test a different rainfly. I did like the design. Something I think that these ultra light tents compromise on robustness and quality. Keep using your tent if it works. Thanks for sharing what you use - it's great to know there's good, quality gear out there.

@@WheelsonaBike Thanks! I have a few different Hotcore porducts and they seem to work well so far. They are a little less money than some of the more well know brands. They are a Canadian company and actually sent me a few of their products to try this summer when I asked them about ground sheets one day! I will be doing some reviews about their products in the future.

I had a problem with Thebsame MSR tent- condensation Even though it sounds like the wind was going straight through it and the tent pole broke only eight days in - Manage to get rid of it sent back to the supplier but they would not take. Ack the ground sheet 😢

I was initially going to finish in St. John's and then I changed my plans following the accident. But I made a compromise to take a bus to the ferry and then ride to St. John's. It's the end point I've always wanted and so I'm here!

Bonjour , je suis content de te revoir , j'ai eu le même problème de fuite d'eau avec ma tente Hubba Hubba NX après quelques utilisations , je n'ai pas réussi à réparer , alors j'ai été obligé d'en acheter une autre identique , mais les infiltrations ont recommencé avec la nouvelle tente neuve , je suis très déçu car le vendeur ne veut pas me la reprendre alors que je ne l'ai utilisé que deux fois , donc je vais changer de marque . I’ve had a few tents over my years of camping, but never one that pitches inner first. How do you find that aspect? Living in the UK, I like to get the flysheet up first! I’m also curious how you’re dealing with power/charging. When I hike I use very little, but on my bike I always use lights & also have a sat nav - how do you keep these charged? Thanks for documenting your wonderful journey!

The tents here typically pitch inner first, I've never done it any other way. Having said that, I can also pitch that tent fly first, when it's raining. Regarding your charging question - I carry two external batteries, and I often use outlets in Cafes and public spaces (libraries are fabulous for charging all the things).
