In June of 2020, we were all set to do a bicycle tour of the Loire Valley to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, COVID hit and we had to cancel and reschedule for September of 2021 but COVID had made a strong resurgence and we rescheduled for September of 2022. I broke my collarbone at the beginning of August and we could not bicycle but did enjoy the Alsace and Burgundy regions of France (videos: • France ). We decided to skip the Loire Valley and try a ride in the bicycling mecca of the Netherlands. Since we had a sizable credit with Discover France we booked our trip through them and their partner Tulip Cycling.
Over five days of riding we went from Bruges Belgium to Leiden Netherlands enjoying the wonderful bicycling infrastructure and scenery of the Netherlands. So many canals, windmills, beautiful towns and countryside. Our fourth day of riding was a shorter day of 28 miles from Brielle to Delft. We took a short ferry ride across Rotterdam Harbor and rode up the Harbor to see the amazing Maeslantkering ("Maeslant barrier" in Dutch). Our ride was through the countryside past many greenhouses and along many canals. Of course, there were cute villages and cities along the way. When we arrived in Delft there was lots of bicycle traffic which made filming and navigating stressful. Again our GPS data did not send us to the right spot and we had to backtrack a quarter of a mile. A highlight of the day was parking our bikes at the Delft train station bicycle parking. Delft is a beautiful city to wander around and we enjoyed a wonderful late lunch and then dinner.

We live in Maasland, a little old village wich you sadly missed on your way to Delft. We regularly make day trips on our bikes to Brielle and te coast of Oostvoorne via that same ferry. Delft is a town full of history. Birthplace of Vermeer and Van Leeuwenhoek, and with the royal graves in the Nieuwe Kerk at the Market square.

Wow, we bicycled close and around your village. The Netherlands has so many wonderful places to explore you could spend months riding around. Delft was a great city. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for posting this, it looks a lovely ride and amazing footage ... do you have a drone camera to take some of the shots?

I don't have a drone, but do have a 5 foot selfie stick that I lift up as high as I can to get a pseudo drone effect. Something I picked up from the joyful trails channel youtube.com/@joyfultrails?si=O1k1E5PskMTi6gqD. I have thought about a drone but the hassle of setting it up and flying seems like it would distract from enjoying our rides. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for posting, i've not biked there yet. I live in the south, more elbow space less canals. Lock those bikes up tight.

The south was definitely more open and natural. All parts of our ride had their charm, especially cities like delft. We were warned to lock the bicycles up by the tour company, as they are expensive and we did not want to pay for a stolen bicycle. We were hoping to get some Koga bicycles as we really liked them but they are not readily available here in the US. Thanks for watching and we are jealous of our Netherlands watchers with your amazing bicycle infrastructure and culture.

I have to admit the array of different signs was a bit overwhelming. My assumption was that this was only for cars but now I know otherwise. Thanks for watching!

Hope you visited the church where William of Orange's mausoleum is. And where he was murdered in 1584. He's considered the founder of the Netherlands even though he was long dead when the Netherlands (or more accurately the Dutch Republic of the 7 United Provinces) formally were recognised as an independent nation after the 80-years war in 1648.

We did not get a chance to visit the church, but we did eat dinner near it and visited the market there in the morning. As I remember, that church was not open when we went by it, seems it is only open from 10am to 5pm. Looks nice from the pictures online. One problem with bicycling from town to town is that there is not a lot of spare time to visit the sights of a city once you get into town and clean up. But the benefit is having a slow relaxed pace through many beautiful cities and countryside you would not get in a car or train. You would almost have to schedule a down day in each city to be able to tour the city. Before and after our ride we spent 2 or 3 days in each city (4 in Amsterdam) we visited to soak in the city and that was very nice, and of course, we heard a lot about William of Orange on our tours. Also about ejecting the Spanish from the Netherlands. Thanks for watching!
