Interesting idea with the mineralization tank. I would have thought you wanted as much of the solids as you could get into the flood/drain media beds. The media beds act as the particulant filters for the raft beds and as a nitrogen fixer for the whole system. I'm assuming the mineralization tank holds the solids longer and recirculates to make a "fermented" fertilizer tea? Do you get more nitrogen this way? Great video and I'm thankful you took the time (and expense) to show us the details. Looking forward to watching the completion, and more importantly, the long term running of this great system.
@exzactlyy
@exzactlyy 5 лет назад
I'd guess without the remineralisation tank the solids would build up in the media beds and clog the expanded shale, probably wouldn't be a big problem and would just require more regular cleaning of the shale/beds. The remineralisation tank would also lower the soluble organic content by having bacteria eat it which would then settle out and get wasted as sludge, I'd guess that if too much organic went into the media beds then more bacteria would grow there and similarly clog up the shale faster. There'd be some nitrification of ammonia to nitrates in the remin tank too, but I doubt Rob chose to include it for that as the media beds should do the nitrification

Question: I can get my hands on a plastic barrel it's food grade, but contained corrosive 8 materials in it. Can I use, if so how should I ask them to clean before I get? Thank you
@9squares

I ran my six bell siphons with 1" risers to a common 2" drain but couldn't get the bell siphons to work consistently. I tried several variations before increasing the common drain to 4" and cutting slots into the common drain for the bell siphons to dump into. I am no plumber but I think the bell siphon drain being open to the atmosphere rather than a fixed PVC connection was crucial to the success of this method.
@Bigelowbrook

I agree. That's one of the reasons why I also have that emergency overflow pipe in each bed so that there is a vent next to each siphon

if you could find a way to automate the valves, I'd have a slow pumping of water from the mineralization tank back to the settling tank, then once the water is a few inches low, have the valve open for a moment to move waste over from the settling tank to the mineralization tank. would it be a good thing to have a little more water circulating from that tank? at least for the plants I'd think, maybe not beneficial for the fish.

19:25 Diverter plate + to make laminar water flow, maybe put a bounch of 2-3 inch pipes, length wise i guess nearly all the way to the bottom and 1-2 feet under your diverter plate 2) maybe design your diverter plate with many holes 2-3 inch holes you want to try to spread the water evenly to each pipes, have 1-2 of water level clearance from the diverter plate to the pipes, just youtube laminar water flow, plenty of people done it you need to mod it for your applications tho eg not use net at bottom to hold the pipes, instead just use some metal and tighten it on the sides.

@fleaniswerkhardt4647 5 лет назад
That is exactly what I was going to ask. There is no direct access to one side of the 1.2m bed or both sides of the 2.4m bed. Initially it seemed like a design flaw but as a lot of thought has gone into the rest of the system, it's hard to think that he made such an error.

@Bigelowbrook
@Bigelowbrook 4 года назад
The overflow pipe next to the bell siphon acts as a vent.
@thecoolestguyeverer
@thecoolestguyeverer 4 года назад
@@Bigelowbrook That's fantastic! I assume you're also using your 3d-printed bell siphons so that the breather tube assists the break? Does the overflow have a one-way valve to prevent water from the vacuum coming back into the media bed? Or does the pressure from the outlet pipe keep it from coming up the overflow?

Would it be just as affective as to have a fan both ends of the poly tunnel. One end sucking in the air and the other end, blowing out the air. Only that your fans have to have the power to blow down the full length of the poly tunnel. As having one either end. They don’t need to be so powerful just a thought. Like the video. Looking to do this myself. Hence why I’m asking. 👍👍👍
