In the USA the average pay for someone who has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering is around $80,000 a year starting. In no way would he not be able to afford a $5000 3d printer. I have a Masters in mechanical engineering doing rotordynamics in turbomachinery.
I can’t imagine it would be too hard to convince a university that one of their (most successful) engineers and one of their astrophysics professors could use a 3D printer

Sarang tamirisa Yeah being an engineer he could show how convenient a 3d printer is. Because it could print a simulation of a mechanism that an engineer was planning. Or Have a 3d model of a structure instead of drawing it on paper making a 3d representation would be easier to understand and would show if the object would work. Example: A engineer was gonna be working on a machine that would require wheels and gears, He could print that model then if there’s error he can just adjust it.

He isn't an engineer exactly. He's a researcher at a university. In the private sector, his salary would likely be in the 80-120K range. As a researcher at a university his salary is based of grant money. He could be making as little as 30-40K.
I love how much the show dumbed down all the guys salaries lmao. Top engineers and physicists at Caltech make around 150 grand a year, hardly peanuts. And considering he stayed at his moms place and paid practically nothing in terms of living expenses, he should’ve had loads of money realistically. It’s certainly dumbing down the boys salaries. Nevertheless it paint a clear picture that academia doesn’t earn as much as private. For one, Howard has a masters’ in engineering, and then it’s from MIT. Worked at caltech for many years, worked on projects for NASA, became an astronaut. Even at low position, at any top firms, just with a masters in engineering is enough to trump most PHDs in microbiology in strong firms as well. Coupled with the fact he was from MIT and his achievements, his salary would trump Bernadette’s already if he bothered to make the switch. Same with Leonard, and to an extent raj. Both of them would command a crap ton of money just by virtue of experience and caltech in their names at any big private firm. +Bobby Papoutsis ikr and he's a pretty accomplished engineer at that, he even worked with nasa and got sent to outerspace so he's not just a run of the mill engineer. he's prolly one of the most accomplished in the group.
Gotta say, I'm surprised that a big research university doesn't already have a 3D printer for the reasons these two already mentioned. Howard could've probably submitted a proposal for a really big and nice one and the university would've probably paid for it.
Johnny Galecki is the most overrated of the entire BBT group. His character took centerstage only because of the his crush/obsession/relationship with Penny.
An actors salary is about how famous they are and how many and what acting credits they have. I don't know what all the two have been in but Galecki was in The Suicide Kings with famous actors. That alone could make him cost more.
@@electricpaisy6045 oh that is so cool. I never done anything like that in school. Though I used to be a in a computer science class and my teacher brought in a 3d printer. I'm not sure why we had one and I've seen some classmates used it but for purposes that weren't really related to class.
I never understood why Bernadette reacted so harshly to this. Howard is easily making over $100,000 a year as a Caltech engineer, and she is making likely considerably more in her profession. She’s acting like $5k is a total bank breaker, not to mention apparently that she should have complete control over everything he buys. Why Howard even mentioned the cost, though, is beyond me.

Caltech engineers only make about $70K a year people working in colleges and uni make very low wages relative to other people applying the same profession in a more commercial settings. Howard doesn't even have tenure, so he isn't making anywhere close to $100k
You could probably charge $200 per doll to people if the likeness was really good. I actually had the same idea as a gift for a friend years before 3D printers first came out.
Pssshhhh.... Handpainting them would be the easiest part. Didn't you ever build any models as a kid ? Many years ago I was lucky enough to get to work (briefly) at a bronze foundry where I would retouch wax sculptures for investment casting. The way it works is you have the original artist's sculpture that you make a die cast mould of. Then you use the die cast to reproduce copies in wax. The wax sculpture has seems from the 2 dies of the mould as well as air bubbles on the surface. I would remove the seems and blend them as well as filling voids left by bubbles and reworking any other defects in the casting. After that the wax sculpture is put into an investment mould (1 time use) and the bronze is poured in which burns the wax out and takes it's place. I would go about it this way just because I know how to do it this way. I'm not even familiar with Blender. I've only heard it mentioned in conversation. Closest thing I've ever done is writing G-code for 2D CNC plasma cutting. I'm pretty sure that G-code is the easiest programming code that anybody could learn to write, because I hate computers (oh, the irony as I type that). I have no idea how somebody would go about writing a program to print something like the arm of an action figure. But, if I had a 3D scanner and a 3D printer I would use those all day.
I never seen a 3-D printer that's as big as an ATM machine. Most 3-D printers are just a frame structure with a stage and has robotic arms to draw the object.

that print quality is insane. I think id consider 5 grand for that. I have ender 3s tuned for making strong things fast but if i could print out two dolls with that quality in less than 8 hours then im already sold
Best part is this scene is a inversion if the common/ now stereotype idea of a man earning all the money and the woman spending it. Seems like it doesn’t work the other way around they can get hand bags for 2k but a man can’t get a 3D printer for 5k. (Obviously this is the stereotype.)
And the fact that, the 5k 3d printer can be more reliable and more convenient than a 2k handbag. It could print anything that is plastic, and not involve of electronic stuff. I don’t know if this is safe but you could print utensils in there plates spoons forks bowls in plastic or better yet some print in metal if you know what kind of metal was used in kitchen utensils Though I only heard about printing metal from beyblading so I actually don’t know of it’s safe or not to use a 3d print kitchen utensils.
This is actually a true statement. My buddy spent 700 on some golf clubs and his wife went ballistic. When he pointed out that she bought a 1500 purse a few ago she said, "It's not the same thing, and that he was an asshole fore saying that"... He had to return the clubs and she kept her 1500 purse.

Good 3D printers can be bought for 150 bucks and work insanely well if you know how to dial the settings correctly. I’m 15 and I’ve already owned 2 as well as my other friends owning there own.
This is a older show. Like I'm 21 and think this is a old show. I bought my first 3dprinter 7 years ago for $300 and it was terrible even compared to the cheapest ones today. The past few years 3dprinting has gotten cheaper and better. But honestly this shows how people used to think about them. It was a battle to convince my parents to let me buy one. (yes let me buy, with my own money) because at the time they were seen by many people as just expensive novelties. It's become way more accessible but not too long ago they were like this scene depicts. Also I really hope your making your own models and not just downloading existing ones. If you aren't making your own models I seriously recommend starting its fun and you'll learn alot, plus any CAD job will pay really well when your older. Specifically I'd try to work on mechanisms like gearing, clips, hinges, etc.
Technically you can use any video camera to scan an object. Heck, most webcam these days are so advanced that they can competently pull a fake green screen to separate a subject from the background, not as perfect as a real green screen but we are very close with the way the tech world is progressing.

Check out any 3D models that are "print in place". I saw a cat toy that printed with a ball inside and all you need to do is remove a little plastic support and it rolls around freely. Of course for a 3d printed whistle, the most popular one that I saw on Thingiverse did not have a ball inside it.

None of who were 3D artists so I’m not really sure why the college got one. Still it’s like thinking about the first computer that took up a whole room. Technology has advanced so rapidly.
No, it will work! BEETHEFIRST 3D printer print them very well. On this case, the "pea" inside is a polygon set on the inner surface, that you have to detach manually but easily with a stylus after printing.

That 3D printer is 5 times the size of the ones I have used that can make 12x12x12 cubes and anything in between and they are under $1000. They also can use a material that is infused with carbon fiber

And the fact that people keep saying she is smarter than him is stupid too. Howard speaks almost seven languages, understands physics as chemistry, aerodynamics, mathematics, mechanics and electricity, has worked in space and had to design equipment in space to cope with zero gravity. Bernadette? She studies the organisms that make bread rise overnight (no offence to microbiologists but a general comparison between Howard and Bernadette). Bernadette can’t do have the stuff Howard can, and the fact that Howard spent half his life living with his mother up until he met Bernadette means that he didn’t have to pay for clothes, a place to stay, or food. Everything was at the expense of his mother, meaning the only things he bought were collectables and belt buckles. He must have had a TON of money in his account, and engineering pays a ton of money. Mind you medical work is pretty good with salaries and such, but come on. Howard is really the superiority in both intelligence and accomplishments. He should make three times the money she makes. All Bernadette is is a rehash if Howard’s mother. They just want to make Howard look like a child all the time.
