Chain on backwards, good one 😉, nice try. Lol. Your videographer wasn’t going to let you get away with that. Heh heh. Elaine from Canada here, noticing that you’ve got the most efficient way of using the Axis - lining up, doubling up. Well done Joe. Have a great week. Cheers.
I've always remembered beach as the tree kids would carve their initials into! It grows enormous at the base if left to grow for years and then always rots and hollows out for raccoons. The branches are cantankerous and difficult to yield much uniform firewood. And like oak, it takes much longer to season. Love the Dolmar. I ran a pair of 5105's for years. Nice video Joe!
Gidday from New Zealand, Joe. You are making the world better; one dad-joke at a time, one stick of firewood at a time. I love your work. Keep on trucking, mate. I think that life and firewood are two things that are far too important to take seriously. Have a good one!!!
Hi Joe - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. Beech is always a great treat for me when I can get some. It's a heavy wood with a straight grain that normally splits readily. The one downside for me is that when you hit pressure such as a knot it is liable to explode with a bang that can make any spectators jump as high as the flying log, which amuses me greatly.
Rodders I no exactly what I mean. Such an underrated wood I can usually get allot of it in slab form for my Woodworking business and usually cheap as most furniture makers don't rate it a think it's beautiful the grain pattern in it something else. 🏴👍
Beech is my favorite. It's so heavy because of all the BTUs inside it. Fun fact, I once saw an old Stihl saw run backwards, I didn't know they could do that.
Used to run dolmar saws back in the 90s but couldn’t find anyone to service them . Good to see there coming back around they were always good saws . Did you get a new camera person ?
Great video Joe. I love beech not only for firewood but for furniture building aswell. I can usually get my hands on allot of it at good prices. Beautiful grain pattern for me. 🏴👍
Beech is either in the oak family or oak is in the beech family. At least beech seasons much faster than oak. Emil Lerp invented the first gas chainsaw and named it Dolmar after the mountain in Germany. You are correct! Love my Dolmars. The later versions are choked for emission standards and sadly no longer manufactured.
Lol, oh Joe. This video took me back to one of my favorite early 90's hairband's song The Lumberjack by Jackyl !! If it weren't for copyright and monetization reasons it would have been the perfect background song for this video!!! As a matter of fact I'm going to go look it up and listen to it right now! On a side note, I believe the camera girl has probably just lost her hopes of achieving the OWB employee of the month award for all of 2024! 🤣
I double checked my own thoughts to make sure. Beech is the family tree, with oak being apart of that family. I know people love carving a beechwood tree because it holds dates and initials permanently. Unfortunately, yet another disease, likely imported, is killing American Beech tree's. Back when my grandpa was still around, he came across Beech off and on. Some in his generation called it Ironwood. Either way, he had your sense of humor Joe, and usually said "this stuff is a real son-of-a beech" due to its weight more than anything. I still use that one occasionally 😅 My favorite grandpa humor were all the Ash tree's we did due to EAB from '07-'17. He would get tired of multiple trees down blocking our woodlot path every 30 yards or so and would say "these trees are a pain in the Ash" or " these Ash are a pain in mine." One day I countered when we went to split a big pile of Ash and said 'Well, grandpa, lets go kick some Ash.' He loved it lol Good times.😅
Seems legit to me. I always run my chains backwards. Chains last longer , it’s a win win situation lol. In all seriousness I did run one backwards, I was about 14 at the time. Couldn’t figure why the saw wouldn’t cut. My father folded him arms and gave me that special look. You know the one ,,,, Joe it was great to see you on Shawn and Savanna Spencer’s channel.
I wonder if you cut a piece of plywood a little bigger than the cutout opening of your IBC tote and put it on the inside of the opening if it would stop all the wood from falling out when it comes off the conveyor. That way you wouldn't have to bend over and pick up all the pieces that fell out. Great video!!
Great Video as always Joe. I have some good news as They are releasing me today from the Hospital. The Nurse watched the Video with me, to see exactly what us Woodhounds do with our Logs. I do like Beech and it burns good. The Woods in back of the house is Loaded with it. They Fall down alot the Branches and the Trees. Once in awhile I get a whole Bunch of It. The DOLMAR IS AWESOME. I only have 1week to recover and then I can begin to cut my Logs up only in Moderation to begin with. Capped at 1hour to do it then rest. You stay Safe Sir, and next time put the Chain on frontwards lol. Ron from the Woodyard in Duanesburg NY.
About ten years ago the Beachwood trees in New Hampshire got infested with a parasite. We went through large tracks of land and harvestedbevery Beach. I split several dozen cords by hand, using a splitting maul. The grain is straight, and the wood drys faster than other hardwoods. Out super Split hardly ever stopped on black bolts. For several years, most of the firewood ww made was Beachwood.
Hi JC - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. My information is that Dolmar made their first saw, the Type A two man machine that weighted 125lb, in 1927 and it was named after the test site, which was Mount Dolmar, Germany.
Time to start the EASTONMADE joe clean the rust off the cutting wedge Joe . Time for another logger truck off logs to come in your woodyard before the spring weight come onto country road Joe .
Please don't take this as questioning your methods, but I'm just curious as to why you split the big beech logs with the Axis splitter? I know the whole log was to big to run through the Japa, but could you have just dropped each cut round into the ram slide area and pushed it through the 8 way blade or one of the box blades on the Japa? I would think stacking the cut logs on a pallet and have your bobcat hold the pallet up at work station height and load them in without having to bend over to pick them up would be faster.
I think it just comes down to work flow. I try to keep the area around the Japa clean and don't like sawdust on the ground around it. I buck logs down on the far end next to the Axis. I have thrown logs into the Japa but I think in this case these beech logs were too heavy for me to be lugging. thanks for the comment Chris.
I absolutely understand, and you have been doing a great job of keeping the new wood yard much cleaned and organized than when you were in your backyard. One more question... Can the Japa split bucked logs larger than 16 inches when added through the front door directly down into the chute? Thanks Joe, keep up the great videos!
Now that we know the Dolmar cuts great with the chain on backwards can you demonstrate how to split a cord with the Easton conveyor belt running in the reverse direction? Question for you - if you run the chain backwards should you not also wear the chaps backwards too?
I had to think about this one...I don't think i have ever had mine at full throttle. I run mine pretty low throttle as it splits just fine there. I have never felt a vibration however.
Great video. Just wondering if I could stop by and check your equipment out. And of course bring my work gloves. That yapa looks impressive. The Dolmar rocks I got the smaller version and it does a great job.
@@ohiowoodburner I totally understand sorry to bother you. I enjoy your channel. You’re not that far away and driving my dump truck and equipment trailer is a little bit of a haul to not catch you. Some day maybe open house I would get the chance and meet you and check the yapa out. . Thank you sir.
Yes. Well done. Suggestion ? What about PPE including steel/reinforced toe shoes or boots ? Here at our place - that is our ONE absolute PPE with wood, cattle, machinery and all Farm & Wood Activities - anyone carrying wood into my house even. Thinking is ? Beech heavy. Fall on foot during bucking. Seems fairly obvious. That is Axis is a must for big logs. Work. How is the 80cc compared to the 500i. I love my 500 with a 25 inch bar but my go to for bucking is the 362 with a 20 inch. 261 with 18 for limbing. All light bars as I am 62 now !! I always carry 2 saws. For Jams. Cheers and keep up the good video work. But again - Maybe put on some safety shoes as makes me crinch this videos ( Hard Working. Man, all the folks at your open house ). Hard to believe but No one talks about.
Go to see Jesse he got some big round for you Joe . Remember THINK 🤔 SAFETY and always put SAFETY FIRST . YOUR chain cut better backward them a 500 i stihl cut with a chain on the right way Joe . 😊
I'm sure it could. I wish I would have held onto a round and tried it on the SS. That would have been a cool vid. If I get another big Beech I will do it. Thanks
Glad to see that you respect your femoral arteries Joe. In Tring which is, as you know the center of the known universe, we never reverse our chains. Just like you did not either. For some reason, the saws work better that way. Stuffed gorilla anyone? We seem to have a lot of them here.
Joe, if it' possible, could you give us the website? Are the address of the cut me? That makes that chain? Chain makes the soul if you can cut that good backwards with it. I sure love to have one. Thanks, Joe and I don't know who the camera person was. But that was Not very nice, put the chain on right to make you look, Bad, I have a given God bless.
Ah Joe your chips are going the wrong way for the chain (if it’s on backwards) 🤔being from down under and having every thing backwards compared to murica our saws only run backwards chains so I know which way the chips fly😂😂
Joe, Joe, Joe....SMH You ought to know better. You put the chain on the right way, but when you store your saw, you're supposed to put the chain on backwards to keep it sharp and to counter act the wear and tear of when it cuts wood. Thanks. I'll take credit for this life changing advice. Plus I'm glad to see you change the pickaroon from left handed to right handed for effective utility.
lol chain on backwards😂 I have always heard that Dolmar 7900 was legendary so I bought the much newer Makita EA7901PRZ1 with the HD filter on it. Let me tell you that saw is not legendary. I since switched to Husqvarna saws and even my 572XP with about 10cc’s less is faster and better all around. Thanks for the video!
Good to know Brian. I don't know what the cat muffler has done to them. I was always told the non-cat Dolmar didn't benefit much from a muffler mod. Mine just has the HD Filter
@@kbittorf335not yet as I see the value is going up now that Makita is not making it anymore. I would not ship it anyway so you would need to pick it up in Wisconsin when I do sell it.
@@Brian-Outdoors gotcha. Tree Monkey in Augusta could port it for you, then you would not want to sell it! I already have one but always looking for another.
@@kbittorf335 honestly I think just gutting the muffler would make it a great saw but I like keeping stuff stock so it lasts. Plus it looks cool as hell.
Sadly, Makita stopped production of all gasoline powered equipment on March 31, 2022 making your favorite saw an orphan. Any Dolmar or Makita chainsaw parts or equipment still for sale are clearance items and anyone that purchases it should at least be aware any warranty will soon be difficult at best.
I was always aware that, at least in my region, Dolmar was not very good with their warranties. My local dealer blamed things on their DC in Columbus. Fortunately I never had to deal with any issues so far. Mine has been around for a while
Wow guys that is cool guys, hey guys, it’s my Dolmar guys, best in the world guys, I got a chip in my eye guys, wear your chaps guys, hey guys, beech has a odor guys, not to bad though, guys. Hey guys, stay safe guys, oh and guys, see you on the next one guys, bye bye guys, hey guys??
I don't know why you are so anal about chaps. If you hit them, you have to buy new ones. If, on the other hand you should you hit your leg, the flesh will grow back... eventually. I know this because my dad took a chainsaw to his shin while he was applying a little push to keep the tree off of the operator. The flesh really did grow back...for the most part!!😮😮😮 True story!
In the seventies i was doing a chain saw job for a neighbouring farmer, long story short my arms got tired because he kept feeding me wood to saw and the saw dropped down and put a gash in my jeans at the top of my left thigh, it just scratched my skin but no blood much. You couldn’t get any more lucky than that. The memory has stayed with me. “ “Hey, let’s be careful out there” all the best from England.
When it comes to chainsaws i would take the Husqvarna 592XP 592 XPG 585, STIHL MS 500I 462 400 ARE BETTER THEN THE DOLMAR CHAINSAW YOUR CURRENTLY USING, Don't Forget safety boots and Eye Protection as well,
No, they're not. a ps-9000/9010 would smoke a 592 and the 7900 has time and time again smoked the 500i. even the 7300 50mm bore outguns an oe 372, 572, and yes even a 462. you're only kidding yourself.
