Once you pick a spot give it some effort, if you scouted properly you will be rewarded, there are exceptions to searching for a spot but I wanted to illustrate the easiest and most successful for any novices out there. As I say often in my videos you can find stuff everywhere in Big Brook (it is miles and miles of real estate) but some spots pay out a little better than others. These are all clips from my first batch of trying to take decent video, as time goes by I will be adding more (hopefully better) videos for everyone. Mind the rules out there - don't ruin the place for everyone else. Big Brook is not just the park as defined on Monmouth County parks website (if you go to marked official sites, follow the posted rules). I am fortunate to live close and find all the little places you can find in Colts Neck and other towns including some that are probably actually Ramnessian Brook.

I hear you can't use shovels at big brook only trowels???
@davidkoblentz
@davidkoblentz 3 года назад
Yes, the rules sign does specify trowels but honestly I am using a very small shovel barely bigger than the trowels I have broken in the past, they were actually longer, just with a smaller head (maybe 70% the size), I think the spirit of the rule is not to excavate the place with full size equip leaving gaping chasms all over the place, if you saw one of my dig sites a few minutes after I was there all day you probably could not tell where I was in the stream... only by the spoil pile on the side. I try my best to leave the place as close to the way I found it... the brook takes care of the rest at an amazing pace actually. I don't dig into any hard material either, just what has been washed loose in the brook naturally.

@@davidkoblentz a shovel is a shovel and a trowel is a trowel. Seems simple.
@davidkoblentz
@davidkoblentz Год назад
@@alienxyt there is a world of difference between a tiny shovel and a full blown construction one (which I have seen people use), semantics, I pull out more garbage than I do fossils... mostly glass, last season I pulled out a tricycle and 2 tires... I actually like finding red brick and adding it to my gardening...

How far of a walk is it to the creek from the parking area?
@davidkoblentz
@davidkoblentz 2 месяца назад
about 6 feet... but, there is a trail that follows the creek, so I always walk in a ways (either direction), keep in mind that anywhere the brook crosses the roads back there you can hop in (as long as you stick to the stream if in a non park designated area), so there is another entrance west of the "main" one, steep dip to the brook but less traveled... and there are other brooks (hop, ramnessian) that also yield fossils.. the "main" place is a good way to get a lay of the land but unless you are going after a big storm I wouldn't expect much right there, you can always find something, but a little effort/scouting goes a long way

I found one. Would you be able to help me identify what type of shark tooth I found.

Have you ever seen evidence of Native American activity in the area? I'm seeing some things in the video that would lead me to believe there should be artifacts there or close by.
@davidkoblentz

I personally have NO luck with the native stuff, I have only found one arrow head ever.. but yes, there is definitely some Native stuff to be found there, I would think especially towards the manalapan end

What size mesh do you use on your sifter?
@davidkoblentz
@davidkoblentz Год назад
If I recall (been a few years since I built this thing) it was 1/8 (I like finding smalls), the key is having the one side with mesh and not a hard wall, it really lets the stream do the work by facing the upright side of the mesh down stream, standard sifters (which of course I bought in the past) you have to shake a bit more imo, this design allows a couple of shakes and most of the sand/mud washes out the bottom and front

I only pick out things that I don't find often... so, I assume you mean the bellemnite stuff which I only pick up if they are 5 inches or larger, which I have only found a few that way in ten+ years, but whatever makes you happy when digging.. go for it ! it is all about the experience !

@@davidkoblentz lol ya that’s what I was referring to, but it was my first and only time there, so i learned a few things by watching your video and a few others. I am excited to go back though. I read you can find dinosaur bones there also. I was digging usually in the middle of the water, which I guess I should be looking close the the walls, or looking for “landslide” areas. And I have to start paying better attention cause those were some small teeth, which I didn’t find any of. I found a few oyster shells and a few bellemnite, and a couple of flat type small rocks, which I think they might be something. But thanks for the reply!

@@mrmojorisin2264 I am glad to help out anyone going to Big Brook, everyone should find something, sure, it most likely won't be life changing but it is history and right here in Jersey... dino stuff is rarer, you get mosasaur teeth/jaw bone parts, some hadrosaur teeth but this is mostly marine in type.. people have found mastadon teeth though so the stuff is out there ! Think about where "large" stuff accumulates... downed trees, curves, choke points... it is pretty logical, if you find big oyster shells you probably will find big other stuff. the silt all looks the same, sometimes it is deep, sometimes not, poke it with a stick, literally ! you will be surprised what you find. look for where things are gathering... the brook did the work
