This year I took my son out for the michigan youth hunt. He has been trying to tag a big michigan buck for the last 3 years. With school and after school programs the michigan youth hunt seems to be the only time frame he's able to get in the field to hunt for a nice michigan buck. My brother Eric made the trip over for the weekend planning to take Jemma out for the youth hunt as well. Unfortunately Jemma wasn't able to hunt due to a school function so Eric just hunt out with us in our hunting blinds.
We started the morning of the youth hunt with a slow boring hunt with only two does showing up before legal hunting light. For the rest of the morning we just stared at the grass. We did some hunting chores hanging up treestands throughout the day. Then we started walking out for our afternoon hunt.
After we found our hunting location for the night we set up. Within a few minutes of sitting down we saw a big mid michigan buck out about 180 yards. As the evening continued deer approached the stand regularly. At the end of the night a bachelor group of bucks started feeding in one of the food plots about 50 yards from the blind.
We were watching a couple of bucks in the distance when a mature buck caught us off guard 20 yards from our blind. Unfortunately Hendrix couldn't see him due to a branch on one of the cedars we were sitting in. The buck spotted us and ran off ended the evening on a sour note.
The next evening Eric had went home but Hendrix and I ventured back to the same stand. The cover was just too good as well the location was close to bedding and on the edge of 4 food plots and 30 yards from a 40 acre soybean field.
The night started slow with 3 hours passing by before seeing our first deer. Two young bucks showed up in the north food plot. They entered the food plot in a blind spot where we couldn't see them coming so we were unprepared.
About 40 minutes before sunset a bachelor group of bucks arrived with a few does in the mix. We spotted a big michigan buck that hendrix wanted to harvest. We watched bucks off in the distance when we noticed the target buck approaching an opening by our deer blind. When the buck made it's way into the opening hendrix took the opportunity to place and accurate shot that allowed him to harvest the buck.
It was great getting out into the field with Hendrix so he could harvest his first buck and it was a great buck at that.
