Big Bud 525/50 pulling a 21 bottom plow. This was taken at the Alvordton, OH Plow Day on 8-8-15.
To try and answer some of the questions in the comments, a plow day is where people bring antique tractors and plows and plow a field for fun and nostalgia. (Click here to see the antiques • Alvordton Plow Day 15 ) This tractor and plow were there for people to look at and see in action. It's not really used for actual production as plows are mostly obsolete at least in this part of the country. I've been told this plow and tractor originally came from North Dakota where it would be more practical.
The video was filmed with a DJI Phantom 3 Advanced.

amazing that 70 years ago there was a horse and single bottom plow. now you have gps guided tractors. i am not a farmer but know many. thank you farmers.

70 years ago would be 1950. Very few farmer MIGHT have been using a team of horses and a plow then, but most farmers were using tractors by then. My grandfather's farm got its second set of tractors in 1939 - six 9N Ford Fergusons to replace the Fordson tractors they had been using.

Car Mo bud this is more practical than you think. The 21 bottom plow might not be but a similar sized tractor on an 80 foot cultivator or a 60 foot air drill is not impractical at all. Hell some of what they're running in Canada and Australia is even larger and more powerful

Bill Dietrich, the inventor, comments that this is a very nice video. For spectators, the best spot to view this plow is on the right hand seeing all 21 mold boards rolling soil. This plow was 1st shown by DMI at the IL Farm Progress Show in 1978. The show site was approx. 20 miles southeast of Springfield, IL. To transport it to the show site, it was not disassembled. We backed it on a stretch flatbed. From the draw bar pin to the tail wheel is slightly over 75'. It was pulled with a Steiger Tiger with Cummins 1150 engine turned up to 600 HP. All 8 of the 30.532 Firestone tires were filled with water for extra weight.

@@cdjhyoung Thank you for asking. I had to ask the boss. Bill Dietrich says, "DMI production plows were designed for 12" - 22" spacing. The 21 bottom was designed to be operated at 23" per bottom in order to take the 40' swath. For the Alvordton, OH demonstration we ran various widths including 23"."

Interesting to see people commenting without first doing a little research. This was only a demonstration for people to watch. Plowing for fun if you will. That tractor was built in 1977 making it an antique. It is no longer in service so stop comparing it your modern day tractors like it was built yesterday. Instead compare it with a john deere 8640 or an international 4786 both of which were available around the same time.

Some of the good things in America, big tractors, train, gators and pickups!I do Think the Plough is to big foar any efficiency since its not a rollplough wich makes to much empty driving when turning.It also needs a lot of ground to turn on. But sure thing it makes a nice job!
@cdjhyoung
@cdjhyoung 4 года назад
A roll plow only has an advantage when the fields are small. Most American farm fields that this equipment would be in are a half mile long and 330 plus acres in surface, or bigger. Turn around time at the end of the field is a small part of the time spent working in that field. The other part of the equation of efficiently plowing is you open the field in such a way that you don't double back on your work area or pull that long equipment into a sharp angle. A totally different mind set than is used in Europe.

This big of a plow is not really all that practical in today's farming. Very little land is moldboard plowed anymore. Mostly farmers use chisel plowing if any plowing at all. This plow was built as a proof of concept, kind of a "LOOK WHAT I CAN BUILD!" sort of deal. Once this kind of plow reached 12 bottoms, problems with keeping all the plow in the ground started to arise at the same time the plow was going out of style. This plow requires over 900 horsepower to pull at full working depth. No single tractor in production today has that much power. This Big Bud no longer has the factory engine, it has been upgraded by about 450 hp.

When they add that many wheels to a tractor, where does it stop adding traction and start loosing power from the extra weight of the additional wheels and tires. Does 6 wide give it more traction without loosing power? would 4 wide provide just as much traction with less power loss due to less rotating mass?

vegass04 the company that built this tractor holds the world record. Right now, there is indeed larger and more powerful but this is still a fairly large machine capable of working large acres. Too many people think that these big tractors are a way for us Americans to show off but they really aren't. These are built to farm big ass fields. The worlds largest tractor was also built to work fields. When you have to pull a deep Ripper (subsoiler) you want as much power as possible and that's what these were built for.
