Big Buddy heater USB power bank supply modification

I have a Big Buddy heater that had the internal fan already installed. These units can power the fan with a special 6V plug or 4 x 1.5V D batteries. This is just a simple way to convert your heater fan power source to be used with any power bank.
The power banks only put out 5V but I don't find a big difference between the 6V factory power to the 5V drop
If you have any questions please ask.

Remove a TEC module from a gimmicky desktop microfridge, bond it using silicone to the hearter brick mount with the heatsink mounted so the fan blows across also secured with silicone. Wire the TEC module to the fan leads and it will power the fan as the heater warms up. Self powered ❤

Thanks for this video. Being the owner of several power packs (5v USB outlets) that are great at collecting dust, I've found a use. Likewise, I never intend to use 1.5V batteries. The USB cable hopefully will route back into the battery compartment and be protected with the cover installed. Tomorrows job! Thanks for this effort. Take care. Added: Job done in short order and worked as shown. Thanks again.

Great video! Really inspired my unintentional fan swap. I mentioned you in my most recent video and shared a link to this one. Thanks again for your video.

Ok, just got a new cord at Harbor Freight and timidly cut a brand new cord. Thicker guage red, bare copper, green thin guage, and white thin guage. Guess i just wing it. Its low voltage and shouldnt have an issue

Neat idea. Worth mentioning you could add a cheap buck boost converter to up the voltage to the proper 6 volts if desired.

looks like you could put the power bank inside the battery area. Could be handy.

Ok in places like homer DEPO you can find big USB fans small table top with clip great for pushing the heat further with power pack or wall adapter great for daily use or power out if you got the little buddy or on with out fan.

I've seen a couple of these mods now and have one question, instead of modifying the heater why not just put the connector on the end of the USB cable to fit the 6 volt jack and plug it in there ?
@ReelLifeWithMike

I dident like the jack as I broke a couple of them as they stick out a bit. More of an opinion

Hi, does it matter which side of the heater you connect a 20lb tank on?
@ReelLifeWithMike
@ReelLifeWithMike 2 года назад
Not at all depending on the connector you use. I have the quick connect which is on the right side I believe.

Nice work! But isn't it possible that long term under voltage might shorten the life of this somewhat difficult to obtain fan motor?
@ReelLifeWithMike
@ReelLifeWithMike 2 года назад
From the model number on the fan that it has an operating voltage from 4.5-6.5 volts. So I assume it’s still in a normal operating range.

Why not just wire the usb to a male plug for the back jack?
@ReelLifeWithMike
@ReelLifeWithMike 2 года назад
Like the small headphone style jack at the back?
@gilg2560
@gilg2560 2 года назад
Wouldn't have been easier to find a male 6volt plug and wire it the USB? That way you can just plug it into 6 volt jack without having to open in all up?
@ReelLifeWithMike
@ReelLifeWithMike 2 года назад
yes I have done that before but you would be amazed at quickly the plug gets damaged or broken when sticking out the back. Also I am bad at remembering things and am sure I would forget it or drop it somewhere ha ha

I used a jump starter for a car mine’s didn’t work not sure what I’m doing wrong
@ReelLifeWithMike
@ReelLifeWithMike Год назад
The jump starters may not recognize a low power draw or may only go on for a min and turn off. May have to be a power bank

will the USB support 9 volts? Will fan run on 9 volts ?
@ReelLifeWithMike

The fan will work on a 9 volt but will burn out.

Why not just make an adapter from the USB cable to the factory power port on the back of heater? Much less work.
@ReelLifeWithMike

I did that a couple of times, but when moving around or forgetting to take the wire out the pin would break. So I wanted something permanently attached
