Thank you for posting this excellent product review. The testing is really thoroughly done and I agree with all your conclusions about this device.

I would love to see some more affordable options for internal 8TB m.2 drives. I just want some faster storage options, that don't need to be extremely fast, to make them a bit more affordable than the current price point of $1,000.

I'm still using Samsung sata 8tb drives for that reason. Affordable 8tb nvme drives will mark a good day
@crat82

@@kenwilliams3279 I have both 2.5 sata and u.2 8tb drives, but unfortunately it is an option for PCs only, not for laptops. Very few modern laptops allow sata 2.5" drives, not to mention that Samsung QVO is very slow even for sata SSDs, nvme should be a lot faster

Agreed. I like these because it’s a reliable long term storage that we won’t have to worry about drive failure. I’m in the same boat that I wish we had more affordability for larger capacity internal SSDs

The humidity specified as “non-condensing” brings me a chuckle as ambient temp will affect whether condensation occurs at a given humidity. Quite the notable qualifier.

Not a very technical review. Interested in knowing TBW, type of nand, how long it can maintain its stated write speed, cache memory if any, etc. Not at all a bad overview, but I notice the makers do not offer much information about these drives on their product pages which makes me very hesitant to buy one. The overall quality of the basic review though was phenomenal and I liked it for that. Please do not hate me for being honest here, but I transfer 4TB per day (use the drive to move large projects back and forth via sneaker net) and really interested to know how long this will last in TBW?

When filling the whole drive the speed drops after writing 5,9TB to a dawdling 33MB/s. A plain old harddisk would be at least 4 times faster.

In what test please?🤔 I saw @ Anandtech 5,25TB with 430-440 MB/s (took ~3,5h.)and after that ~60 MB/s, so it took 9h. to fill 90% of the 8TB T5 Evo.

Superb presentation. This SSD's appeal to me is it's capacity, the main downside for me is the speed. Given it's hefty pricetag, I'll probably wait and see if a faster 8TB comes along. That's the plan, but I am an impulse buyer so....🤔

Finally, an affordable (we hope) high capacity drive!! Took them long enough. That said, I bought a Cooler Master Oracle enclosure to quickly transfer data between multiple locations. But now that's done, it's just sitting there without a purpose. Any recommendations on m.2 drives that would pair nicely with it, to use as another external SSD?

I’ve been looking to back up all my files to keep in a lockbox at the bank that I update each year. All my family photos, documents, and person work files are mostly digital. I’ve been eyeing the 8tb Samsung 870 Sata so I’m curious how this compares in price. Thank you for you coverage of SSDs and storage in general.

Spec wise for me it's fantastic. Wish I could afford 4-5 of them or even one. No idea what the price will be, but I am guessing more than 0.60 cents that I currently have lol. But yes, it does look like a potentially a great drive not just for the specs, but perhaps hopefully to start a bigger push for larger capacity SSDs to finally replace (cost wise) larger hard drives.

Samsung will have to seriously push their prices to make it a compelling buy, if 4TB Samsung 990 Pro gives 7GB/s r/w, they gotta make this T5 Evo cost no more than 1/10 of the price/capacity, something like 40€ for 4TB T5 Evo doesn't sound likely at all though

Can someone explain to me the reason to have a high capacity storage drive so portable??? Why doesn't someone make an 8,10,or 20 tb ssd the size of a WD one book? (maybe 4"x8"x6" box). A high capacity external SSD would not have to be fast or portable if you just want to store thousands of files long term.
@StefanAlexandruGeogloman
@StefanAlexandruGeogloman 9 месяцев назад
A high capacity drive should be at least decently fast - you don't want to take 2 days off to transfer the data. Also, if your main drive has problems, you want to get the data transferred as fast as possible. Very small is not really necessary but of course nobody will make the drive bigger just to be bigger. People these days don't even have laptops, some just tablets or just phones - a small SSD means easier use when you're using other small devices. For desktop users of course it doesn't matter if they don't travel with it. But the main thing that's just unclear even after all those years is how secure is having data store on offline SSDs since they loose the capacity to store data after months/years depending on the temperature.

Big Capacity - Yes Please Small Performance - YES PLEASE Huge price tag - oh nvm I was hoping by now there would be some kind of ultra budget large capacity SSD to compete directly with HDDs - as bulk storage for less important data Even like 200MB/s would keep me happy at the right price, as it's basically what a HDD does but would have far better random I/O and be far less physically fragile But alas, per TB this is still around triple the price of budget SSDs, which are themselves between triple and quadruple the price of 3.5" HDDs

I would rather buy two cheap NVME SSD’s or even two 990Pro 4TB because they are verry cheap at the moment just bought one today for €249 and put them in a 40Gbps USB 4 enclosure or even a 10Gbps enclosure. Idk maybe just me but to me this speed isn’t acceptable anymore in 2023.
