I think you will be sorry if you put speakers on the front. Just use wireless speakers when you need them up front. I am not the expert but I am a retired aerospace engineer with a couple of decades boating.

I'd have 4 speakers n the salon and 2 in the back. Don't bother up front. You can take a Bluetooth speaker up there. Traditionally you'd have them facing toward you not down. Otherwise you loose the stereo effect

If you find where you want to place exterior /camping blue tooth speakers you can fix magnetic attachments.. but beware tou dont mess up your compasses etc. The other option is H D velcro patches or tie downs .. dont want them dropping overboard or through the tramps.

for the front just get a Bluetooth speaker and hook it to your system, bring it out just when you need it. I am with you on your concerns, and think holes in the front and speaker that are always wet will be horrible. Keep up the good work, cant wait for you to be sailing again.

The fabric/replaceable faceplate speaker will probably be better in the sun (since it's replaceable) than the metal-grill ones, as metal grill is usually painted then cut, not the other way around, so in the internal hole ring it's often unpainted, and if so it start's rusting there in days. RIP that bluetooth speaker with the metal grill I once had.

Love the idea of the speakers for the foredeck, but agree wouldn't want to put holes in the deck where you are going to see greenwater over the bow. Suggest you buy/build speaker enclosures, and mount them under the dolphin seats facing backward. No holes, speakers face toward you when lounging, and away from the onrush of water. Should be off the shelf enclosures that are made for ski boats that mount speakers on the targa arch. You need to be careful though, some of those surface mount speakers are made to have a large volume of air behind them, if you put them in a small enclosure you could really change the response for the worse, e.g. much lower dampening factor. Check the specs on the minimum air volume for each driver, you may need different drivers. As for the Bluetooth idea others have suggested, I tried that on my last boat, and opted out of the factory-installed speakers. You need to have power where you plan to mount them, running wires or moving them to recharge was a pain. Also, they would turn themselves off to save battery, not a bad thing, but every time you want to turn on music you had to crawl over something to turn each speaker on. Then there is the occasional Bluetooth connectivity flakiness. Not a fan. Maybe for the foredeck, if there is no other option as you'll be carrying the bt speaker with you when you go forward, but for day-to-day sound, no thank you.

I wouldn't mount speakers on forward deck. Rather use portable wireless speakers. It avoids cutting into the deck and if weather gets rainy or waves high the speakers can be pulled inside.

You will get better performance and sound quality from the 6.5" speakers if they are mounted in a cabinet with some volume vs. the headliner. The flat mount speakers are fine on a bulk head or head liner.

Oh, and in general you'd be better putting speakers in walls rather than ceiling. Though with a surround setup, the back speakers aren't too bad in the ceiling. Definitely if you only have two in the salon, or for your two fronts with a surround setup, you want them in front of wherever you'll be the most, facing you. Stereo mixes are designed for two speakers left-front and right-front of you.

I wouldn’t install any speakers. I’d just get some killer Bluetooth system. As the tech improves easily upgraded. If they suffer water damage, easily replaced. Although it’s a bit different, my mum had an a,axing Bose system installed in her home when she did the renovation in the mid 90s. Speakers everywhere, sub woofers, in 1995 it was state of the art. Somewhere in the last 15 years the system sat dormant, while Sonos speakers popped up in every room. Better features, more easily operated. It changed my perspective on installing home sound, and it would certainly be the way I’d go if building a boat.

Two speakers front, two speakers back will work but I would put 4 speakers inside so the volume can be turned down for conversation but still get a good surround sound effect. If the sub is full range it can be mounted low pretty much any where inside.

I have a similar Fusion System on my power boat. I would not place any speakers as you indicated in the forward area. I agree with many of the others with no forward speakers. I would use wireless that you can put out when needed as mounted ones would probably not last long with sun and water from my experience with marine speakers. Use the extra set in your workshop or bedroom. Another option is to mount them inside close to the hatches on each side and open the hatch covers to listen to the music.

Sub woofer outside under the BBQ as the vibration will keep one of you up on a night passage and that will be the area that most times you and your other half will entertain, the other speakers two inside facing the rear of the hull for the same reason you could place two one each side of the top of the Bi Fold door. Bluetooth the front Speakers due to weather. ??? What i find funny is most sailors try to keep Vibration out of there Ships and here you are Adding it to your Hull :) lol.

On our 70' sailing trawler we just used Bose Bluetooth battery powered, portable speakers. We keep the speakers and our paired cell phones with us wherever we were on the boat. Honestly? After the initial novelty of the speakers, we rarely used them. Unless you are a music fanatic, I wouldn't even have a stereo onboard. Personally, I prefer to read quietly listening to the wind bend the sails and the water glide past the hull.

Put enclosed speakers up the mast facing downwards, don’t cut holes in your deck. Try to position the sub on deck but away from the bedrooms for nappers trying to sleep while any music is playing. Look at wake board speakers for the mast. Better sound but you may need another amp.

Regarding the front speakers: you have large cargo bins behind the seating area, just put them in there and open the lid when you want to hear music. Or mount them inside so they point outwards when the front windows are opened. If putting them inside, put them into a rotating box, so you can use them als inside speakers too.

Two at the front of the saloon, with the front windows open these can cover the front deck. Two at the rear of the saloon, with the rear windows open these can cover the front of the stern deck. Two at the rear of the hard top, covering the rear of the stern deck and sugar scoops. Tie your laptop into a portable projector at the front of the saloon and a screen at the tri-fold doors and have a movie nite over your stereo system. Maybe put the sub-woofer in the breakfast bar?

Nick, I believe your concern of the front speakers is justified, however, the placement you pointed out does not work for me either. What about mounting them on a gamble that folds down from underneath the front window brows? I would also not only recess the nav station components like in hull one, however, I would also add a slight swale to the left side allowing for a more wrap around Jaguar dashboard feel, and it would allow for a better angle towards the nav station’s chair.

As someone that has done maintenance and repair in the marine industry for decades I'm going to give you some critically important advice. As you were going along talking about esthetics and solid long panels, speaker and light installations and so on it dawned on me. You are going to want access via panel, hatch, or other means for all of the systems including lighting and speakers. Just something to keep in the forefront in all your design consideration.

Everyone has said not to put speakers up front. I agree completely as this is just a really good way to ruin expensive speakers and add more leak points to your boat. Buy a good quality portable speaker that fits nicely on the steps up to the roof and you'll be sorted. Secondly, under no circumstances would I fit main speakers in the ceiling or floor. You have no mass to prevent weird reflections as sound bounces up and down out of phase. Plus, they will blow out your eardrums every time you walk under them! I would place speakers high and low in the cockpit and just high in the salon. high = approx 5ft up and low = 1ft. Zone to allow low position only, for when you have company and want background music.

Hello, I am just in awe of your knowledge and energy. You are such an inspiration. Thank you so so very much. Such a nice and beautiful boat is about to take on the seas, congratulations!!!! My humble thought about the boat would be that I would most certainly have the interior walls around the windows in the main saloon in bright color or white. Currently, they are black and for me personally, if I look from the captain wheel position / helm to the way ahead, the black frames around the saloon windows are just so strongly visible that disturb the view of the sea and make the saloon smaller as well. Just my modest and humble opinion. Otherwise again, so very thankful for your sharing your passion, wisdom, and knowledge. Thank you so very much and I wish you all the best, hope to see you on the seas someday!

2 speakers in the salon where you sit, 2 speakers out the back where you bbq, 1 speaker in each hull / berth (for Barry white night 😉) and for up front buy a Bose wireless outdoor speaker and connect it to the fusion over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. You will likely only need it when sitting up there for a few sundowners in nice weather then take it back inside when not in use. No need for holes in the foredeck and Running wiring etc. Bluetooth range is 10m and with the salon front windows open I’m sure you won’t have any issue. I have one and I use it everywhere battery lasts several hours.

She is coming together. So excited for you. As others have said, I would not have speakers up front. I would put speakers in the just inside the windows (back side of the nav station perhaps so long as it does not cause interference) and when you want to listen to music open those beautiful windows and let the sound pour out. They will sound better than any salted over speaker. If you really need super high quality music upfront Bose and Sonos have some awesome wireless units that can also serve the dingy and the beach. Good luck!!

My biggest advice on the stereo system is to plan on replacing it in 3-5 years. Marine audio is WAY behind on the audio front but has really good distribution capabilities. So you can't go and put a consumer grade Sonos system on your boat but at some point soon the marine grade systems will catch up. If you just listen to music the Marine systems should be fine but you might want to upgrade to better speakers in the future. Maybe get two head units and put them in party bus mode with one inside the lounge and the other on the back somewhere so you don't have to go inside to use the physical screen. You probably already planned on this since most marine units only have power for 2 zones and you need external amplifiers for more and you're thinking of having 3. The biggest change on the amp end to look for will be Atmos support if you like to watch movies. Unlike the older surround tech, where you have to place the speakers carefully, with Atmos, the recording knows where all the sounds should exist in your room and it does the math to use whatever speakers you have to make it happen. Now it still helps to have speakers covering the room but it's MUCH less finicky about where. Generally somewhere near-ish the four corners at listening level and then 2-4 ceiling speakers. Given realistic constraints of your build, just make sure you can retro-fit at least two in the middle of the ceiling. If you can't have any wall speakers, push the speakers towards the walls without getting too close. Some speakers allow you to mount the speaker angled into the room rather than straight down. There are some great resources for Atmos out there you can read up on. The BIG deal is up-firing speakers don't work great and without wall speakers you would basically be doing the reverse with down-firing speakers.

I've built speakers and splitters and there isn't really something universally good that covers everything. But I would insulate the boxes with audio spesific wool whereever you decide to mount them. The sub (subs) should preferably be placed where it can resonate in the hull. You can always turn it down, also the sound is usually more intense away from the sub itself, the hull will decide where that might be, and for that reason this needs to be tried out before permanent install. I wouldn't mount anything through the hull outside, there is no way that will keep from leaking over time. You could also use a calibration unit to measure the sound in different areas to prevent unwanted acoustics and for optimal latency. As I said, there is no formula that covers everything and as you know a boat is a different beast all together. I wish you the best of luck in this truly important endeavour! 😊 /cheers

Don’t put the speakers outside on the front deck. Consider this, 2 speakers on rotating pedestals (like plotters are mounted on outremers) mounted on front to corners or saloon above/behind nav station and other front corner. They can direct sound back across the saloon when in inside mode and when you are lounging on the front deck, open the forward facing hatches ( weather will be good as you are on the front deck!) and rotate them facing out. Best of both worlds, weather protected, inside mode will have great sound as not projecting straight down to the floor if ceiling mounted. Cheers Tony

Low mounted speakers you are planning on the foredeck will not give a good stereo spread of sound, you well just hear the one you are closest to. Agree with other comments to use a Bluetooth portable speaker up front when you need it. The Fusion system can link to a bt speaker. Inside the saloon go for four speakers in the ceiling, or consider the reflective nature of the ceiling and fire the sound up from flat points around the perimeter where space exists.. zones, don’t do it unless you zone the cabins as seperate from the living areas. It will drive you mad. Put the ex-foredeck speakers in the rear roof above where you will spend most of your time there (or even use four of those flat speakers Love your work.

I concurr with many others: no holes in the forward section of the hull. So speakers only bluetooth for the foredeck. I also agree that you’d like to have some air volume behind the 6,5” speakers. I believe I heard you say that the sub-woofer should be combined with the 6,5”? But in the salon you’ll apply to small speakers in the headliner? I like the design of the nav station with the recessed instrument panels. That will much safer at sea. ⚫️ was better than ⏺️ but that’s a matter of taste. Can’t wait until S-day💦!

Being an audiophile myself. I have built several speakers and amps over the years and have a boat. Others suggest not having the speakers out front. I agree. You will probably just use those at anchor, so just open the windows or use bluetooth or install a plug upfront and bring speakers out when anchored. Doesn't look like those recessed speakers have a very wide dispersion. I assume this is a stereo system and not like a 5.1? Is it possible to do a temporary hookup of the system before the final install? If so, you can experiment with the placement, toe in etc. On a boat you don't have a lot of options on placement and with all the hard surfaces about reflections and standing waves can be a problem. So experiment as much as possible.

The speakers have a IP65 rating, (check the IP rating) the 5 meaning they can handle a 6.5mm 30kPa water jet at 3 meters (~4psi). A good petrol water blaster is about 14000kPa. I would think at the front they aren't rated high enough, at times I would think they could be fully submerged and suffer way higher water splashing pressure. Unless you have fully sealed covers.. Probably want IP67 rated speakers for the front location. A alternative location might be the soffit of the coach roof at the front, although with the front windows open the sound could be blocked.

I'm thinking of 3-D of Surround Sound. Aft outside speakers pointing down and a bit forward. Mid-Boat either inside or out, pointing down and a bit toward center and the forward interiors pointing aft and a bit down. The sub-woofer is good where it is. Outside forward have a sound bar pointing forward and they usually have a built-in sub. Water proof plugs makes the bar removable when needed. (Bluetooth?) A nice console to balance the speakers and sound just where it's needed. Cars and RV's have them so why not you ??????? .................... enjoy

I agree with most below .... 4 speakers inside (and Blue tooth for the tramp. area. Use the 4 alike and then the other 2 use in the headliner above the grill area . Now fo the most important part ---> "stereo imaging" is 10 feet apart. So place the right left pairs as close as you can get to 10 feet apart (and I would make the next pair inside 10 feet from those if you can , so the 4 corners of a 10foot square , I don't know the depth, bow to stern/frt to back, of your salon, but this would be ideal if it fits)

I very much enjoy your show, I believe you would be better off with portable Wi-Fi speaker for the front instead of putting holes in the boat.

Don't really understand why the Nav station is being changed to light grey colour, and even worse it looks like a gloss! You commented on the recess being added to stop light reflection, but this colour change will make it worse. That's the reason why most helms are matte black and flat. You don't want any distracting reflections when using the instruments. Imagine a night passage where even the most miniscule amount of ambient light is just going to hit that grey (gloss), surface and its accentuated curves to be effectively amplified back into your eyes. Agree that modern "glass bridges", dio radiate a lot of light but most have night-mode to reduce it. Like most have said - no holes for permanent speakers on the foredeck, just use a portable unit and bring out onto the deck when needed. There are so many waterproof bluetooth ones around these days. Just my two cents.

Regarding the foredeck speakers... I wouldn't. I agree with Brian C. I'd go wireless. Easy enough to take them up when you're on anchor. Maybe create a friction fit silicone base so they're secured in and not easy to knock lose. If they HAVE to be mounted, I'd suggest gasketed covers that can be locked down for passage and removed once you're on anchor or if you have really good sailing conditions with little spray. Salt water is insidious... even waterproof isn't so waterproof at sea. I'd recommend buying an extra couple pairs for stashing in the spares bin.

I would suggest 4 speakers in the saloon and 2 in the cockpit. You have opening windows, so if you are sat on the front the music will be audible through the windows?

Facing forward is likely to destroy the cone. I would recommend building boxes that can sit in a locker when moored. You pull them out. Far too likely for damage on the front. Even just water on them for extended periods of time. They could design the speaker box to fit in with the design.

Mount speakers on walls facing you, sound from above just sounds like a tannoy. When you walk under one your head will be too close. There will be no stereo effect. The enclosure is so important that you’d be better off just getting some quality bookshelf speakers and screwing them down.

Ditch the speakers in the front and just get a decent Bluetooth speaker for those times you want to hang out up there with your tunes. Fusion can work with Bluetooth. Two less holes where you don't really want them.

id have magnetic flipdown dark tinted glass or makrolon polycarbonate infront of instruments n switches in recessed areas of new nav station unit... look tidyer at anchor ⚓⛵ personally Id put All speakers inside or under canopy.. front 2 inside cockpit ceiling above each front opening windows.. (enough sound for outside front of boat when windows open on good days or at anchor.) 2 speakers in ceiling each corner just inside rear doors. 2 speakers at each side at rear of under canopy.. sub woofer in same position Nick proposed. 💿📻🎶🔊

On the blue tooth speakers there are several that are "water proof". I highly recommend the UE2 units. I have found them to amazingly durable however, note that most of my experience is fresh water. You can also hook as many as you want together and we have found that to be a lot of fun. They have gromit that is suitable for a carabiner. Have hooked 7 together at once in the past floating down the river. They will connect to anything bluetooth but I would check with Fusion....good luck

i'm not an audiophile like my brother but i have learnt some stuff. forget the speakers in the bow area, just open the cabin windows. i think the woofer should either be as far forward in the main cabin or situated in the stern facing forward. after all most of your time on board will be there. also you wont want to be playing music load unless you're out in the middle of the ocean :-)) p.s. after reading a few comments i agree with the portable wireless speaker ideas. i think rick moore might be a good reference(sailing sophisticated lady).

Can you fit a Speaker in the overhang where the front windows are? That's your safest option for front speakers, I would not put them on the foredeck. Presuming your only going to use them at anchor, as backup you can put them inside the main cabin and just open the windows.

On your speaker question, does the head unit you have do surround sound? I so, I think you may want to do 4 speakers in the cabin with the sub for the times you two want to watch movies or have TV night. Then when you are sitting on the bow of the boat you could open the front windows to listen to your music. I guess the downside to this would be if you were tying to conserve conditioned air inside the main upper living area. Then the two speakers on the back. I would worry about the speakers on the front unless maybe you could get them under the overhand of the front windows, but I would still think the amount of sea water that would splash in those areas even with marine grade speakers would cause issues quickly. This is just what I think, I'm in no way a marine audio or even an audio expert. Also enjoy seeing you and Teresa both in videos, if its all just from your point of view walking around then it loses some of the IDK feeling of authenticity to me.

I would consider putting speakers two at the aft saloon in ceiling and two by cockpits and then inside two and the sub. Depends if you the ceiling speakers outside will be enough for when you at the helm because that is when you will want some nice music outside I imagine. Saying that if you put them inside you could use them when watching netflix. I'd get an av receiver as well if I had a boat because I like to play films with the dolby digital sound. You can get small ones these days.

I would put bigger speakers further away from the tramps, it'll sound better and be more protected if they're further aft. Speakers pointing down from the mast would also make sense. Don't worry about water damage, it'll be the amplifier than blows up from a short not the speaker, and speakers are cheap enough. Only controversial opinion i'd put out there is putting the subwoofer in the ceiling cavity, not lower down. It will sound better, and I bet if you mount it right you'll even get bass outside as clear as inside, albeit quieter.

2at the back 2 mounted inside in the ceiling and the other 2 on swing arms inside at the windows ( swinging out through the windows when open). You will only be at the bow when the windows are open.

I agree with those who say skip the forward speakers. They WILL go bad and you'll have holes that will need to be filled with a different shape speaker with different mounting holes than whatever is currently available. I like the idea of indoor speakers near the window, or small bookshelf style speakers near the windows that can be rotated to face forward or in the cabin. Like the classic Bose systems. Your little speakers don't need to be in a big. They're just mid range and highs. You're going with a subwoofer to cover the lows.

Use the two forward speakers for a zone in the main cabin. Above the bed. Seems likely because they're fabric covered.

Rather than cutting holes for the speakers on the foredeck. Could you put two speakers in small boxes, that could then be swivelled to face the opening windows, when you are on the foredeck having sundowners

I think you need more speakers in the cockpit. You'll spend more time there and being outside subject to more noise, wind etc you'll want better coverage. I'd also suggest volume control for each zone. I assume that unit has Bluetooth which will be nice when one of you wants to jam the tunes thru the cans while the other is sleeping after a long night on watch.

As a 1260 owner who has been in some rough waters, I would NOT mount any speakers on the forward deck. Use a pair of Bluetooth battery powered waterproof speakers up there when you need them. There are gaps between the outer shell and the inside of the boat, and if water finds a way in through the hole cut for any reason, you are going to end up chasing a leak that goes between the shells. I developed a small crack in one of the forward lockers that ended up draining into the starboard storage cubbies next to the bed. Really unnerving to be at sea and find water in places it shouldn't be with no way to investigate in the given sea-state.
