The NAB 2024 SHOW will be here in a matter of weeks and Blackmagic Design, Canon and Sony may just be poised to stun us all.
Last year saw huge improvements in cinema cameras, but left some of the major players without an announcement. This year will be different.
Red Digital Cinema will continue to reassure its users that its acquisition by Nikon is nothing to worry about.
Fujifilm will continue to raise up the camera ranks and could surprise everyone with a real cinema camera contender. Canon may release a new C200mkii, C500mkiii, C300mkiv, C70mkii or R5C mkii. Sony will no doubt undercut its new Burano owners with a FX6 mkii and Blackmagic Design will discontinue the much beloved Pocket Cinema Camera 4k in favourite of supporting its new super popular Apple Iphone camera APP.

PREDICTED and DELIVERED. ITS OFFICIAL BMD DESIGN launches Blackmagic CINE camera in URSA BODY today at 5-6pm. What cameras do you think will be released this year at NAB 2024? Heres what we have discussed in the comments over the last year…..cant wait to see how much comes to fruition and how much we got right and what we got wrong….

I've recently been wondering if BMD might use the tech they developed with the 12K to make an 8K MFT sensor--put that into a micro body and swap in a CfExpress slot where the HDBNC connectors are. IF they were to do a BMMCC G2--this is the only way I think it would work imo. I would be very surprised if they went down this path... but I also never expected them to bring back the micro to begin with. If they made that sensor, they could also put it in the Pocket 4K body as well--who knows!

There's no way blackmagic are giving us a full frame global shutter sensor, or even a global shutter smaller sensor. Sony is typically years ahead of the others in terms of sensor tech (because they make most of the sensors the others use) and they're only just getting full frame global shutters. I'm hoping for an L-mount ursa, ideally with a redesigned body shape, but Blackmagic haven't been predictable for some time. I'm interested in seeing what panasonic, blackmagic, sony, Nikon (because of RED) and Fujifilm come out with. Also, I asked Blazar if they're planning a wider Remus lens, and they said "watch out for us at NAB".
@cinechimp
@cinechimp 5 месяцев назад
L-mount Ursa I think will be a yes, but most likely to the 4.6 version as this is there oldest camera now, I think. Totally agree with you about sony sensors, I think the pocket 4k, 6k and 6k pro are all sony sensors in BMD bodies…People also forget that Nikon also own MRM and already have a foothold in the high end cinema and advertising space. Blazar have already announced the release of new s35mm lenses prior to NAB, so I am also super curious as to what they will be…maybe a super budget 2x lens set...

This is to add perspective for people who are complaining about the dynamic range of the pyxis. So here is cineD dynamic range test done to a signal to noise ration of 2. The new bmcc6k gets a score of 11.7 so the pyxis will be the same as it the same sensor. A $3000 camera can’t get much more DR. The bmpcc og had a score of 11.2 and it’s 10 years old. Sure a $25000-$80000 camera has it if you are willing to pay a whole lot more a true DR of 13-15. 1 ARRI ALEXA 35 15.3 2 ARRI ALEXA Classic 13.8 3 RED V-RAPTOR 8K VV 13.7 4 ARRI ALEXA Mini LF 13.5 5 Sony VENICE 2 8K. 13.2 6 Canon EOS C500 MII 13.1 7 Sony Alpha a7 IV 12.9 8 FUJIFILM GFX100 II 12.8 9 Canon EOS C300 MIII 12.8 10 Canon EOS C70 12.8 11 RED V-RAPTOR [X] 8K VV 12.8 12 Panasonic LUMIX S1H 12.7 13 Sony Alpha a1 12.7 14 Blackmagic Design URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 12.6 15 Blackmagic Design URSA Mini Pro 4.6K 12.6 16 RED KOMODO 6K 12.5 17 DJI Ronin 4D 6K 12.4 18 Sony Alpha a7S III 12.4 19 Sony ZV-E1 12.4 20 Sony Alpha a7CR 12.4

I tend to think the second iteration of the FX3 will likely just be a 6k version of it with a few other inconsequential updates i.e. no internal NDs, no global shutter etc. Judging by the impending shutter angle update later this year, the implication seems to be that they’re not looking to replace the FX3 anytime soon but to maybe create a 6k version for those who want the extra resolution. As for Blackmagic, they’re always the wild card. They either drop something completely groundbreaking or something underwhelming like the recent full frame no one asked for. They could release a sub-10k box camera that rivals the overpriced Burano but they likely won't.

I'm a noob when it comes down to cameras, but wouldn't a Full Frame 12k getting closer and closer from an Imax? I know there's a gap between 70mm, 65mm and a Full Frame, but from what I heard it seems like scanned 70mm film are in the 8k-11k ballpark. So a Full Frame 12k could have a resolution similar to a 70mm 11k... or am I completely wrong? As said, I'm a noob and I know there's more than just pixels, obviously... But somehow, I'm very pleased with what Blackmagic is doing and if there's one company that could come with an affordable alternative solution, that would be them... maybe even a dual 12k Full Frame censors as you're saying... I imagine that kind of system would be just as good (if not better) than imax...
@cinechimp
@cinechimp 5 месяцев назад
Absolutely great question….That would al depend on whether you are going to use the resolution to define it as Imax or the physical size of the sensor. Traditionally it would be measured in physical size, but today we have cameras like the 9x7 achtel and Ursa 12k which are s35mm sensors with super dense pixel counts and thus the resolution of much larger formats. I think the “digital” camera market is still a bit of a wild west as every sensor seems to be slightly different sizes. I wish it would be standardised….with film the true resolution of an image depends on how many (in layman's terms) step prints are made before the scan is done as each step in the process reduces resolution….affordable imax would do me...
@Spidouz
@Spidouz 5 месяцев назад
Yeah, I always have trouble to understand the correlation between film and digital… I tend to think that if the number of pixel and shape of the censor is the same, it wouldn’t matter if the censor is slightly smaller or not. But then I wonder about the amount of light that hit the censor, which means more information for a bigger censor. But then I release that digital can have higher fps too, or higher pixel density, etc… so I really wonder how much the amount of light really matters for “digital”? Because bigger censor will also mean that it’s gonna be tough to find lenses that even work for those censors… while we can find “affordable” solutions, even for Full Frame these days. So as said, many many questions that are pretty much never explained on any PR documents about a new camera. For very long time, we thought the number of pixels alone would make a “better image”, but it’s not…
@cinechimp
@cinechimp 5 месяцев назад
OG Blackmagic design Cinema cameras, pocket cinema camera, digital bolex, Arri Alexa, none of which are 4k native all product excellent images. Then theres the new true 16bit RAW cameras that are starting to emerge with potential price tags of around 1kUSD….think of a sensor as a canvas on which you are going to paint, some will resolve sharper details, others will offer greater tonality, some the ability to paint in the dark….
@Spidouz
@Spidouz 5 месяцев назад
@@cinechimpWell, I guess BMD listened to us… they made the Pyxis 6k Full Frame, the Ursa 12k Full Frame, and a future Ursa 65mm 17k… I guess, they aim at both entry level and top of the top…. Clearly trying to go after Arri/iMax with their 65mm 17k.

BM need to get into autofocus if there cameras had eye tracking they would crush most other camera brands in my opinion. I think BM need to reduce the weight of the URSA and make it a bit more power efficient so you can get around 3 hours from the small 99wh batterys that are now becoming common. When comparing the Sony FX6 to the URSA the URSA is a lump to cart around all day.

@cinechimp 6 месяцев назад
I totally agree with you. The weight and of my Ursa 12k + all the batteries was one of the main reasons I sold it and down graded to a older production 4k and couldn't be happier with the decision. One battery that would get me a couple of hours on the Ursa 12k can run for almost two days on the PROD4k. And with most deliveries still only in 4k or lower…save your back...And you are right if BMD could implement a reliable form of AF (red has done it) in a smaller maybe carbon fibre body that would be sweet. I don't know if you have had this problem with your Ursa, but Jesus mine ran hot…like super hot to the point where it was uncomfortable to have on the shoulder.

I haven't really used the 12k for prolonged periods but I have never noticed my original 4.6k running hot, however I am in the UK and most of the time its freezing so if it did get hot I would be grateful for the heat. 😂 I often get shot down on the BM forums when I suggest autofocus but honestly I use Sony stuff a lot and it makes them so much more versatile cameras especially when self shooting or in smaller crews, you can gimbal easily, use it on a slider or track as you push it it just makes the cameras so much more usable, and of corse you can always switch it off if you don't want or need to use it. I wonder if its because BM don't make there own lenses that its difficult to implement an AF system, or cost who knows but I personally think they are losing users because of it. @@cinechimp

20 years ago I would have shot AF down as well. I started as an AC and them worked my way up to being a focus puller before transitioning to DP. And nobody used AF and I value the skill of FP’ing. AF back then, it was laughed at. But now, even lidar is so good - how can you not use it. Its undeniable and a real tool. Its not right for everything, but I can tell you, some of the moves I have been able to pull of with AF would have taken 10 times longer with a AC. Times have changed, and you have to change with them….
@jamesalexanderbarnettdp9479
@jamesalexanderbarnettdp9479 6 месяцев назад
Absolutely 100% agree, on narrative a focus puller is obviously a must, but the amount of times takes have been wasted on a slow push in and the AC has lost focus for a second I can't tell you. Like you say there are many times where I would much prefer a human pulling focus to isolate a subject or shift focus on dialogue on a deep 2 shot for example. But on planned pushes in and pulls out I would pick eye tracking autofocus every time.@@cinechimp

@@jamesalexanderbarnettdp9479 oh you are speaking my language…I once was DPing a short film where the producer allocated me a focus puller that met the budget, 90% of the film (16mm) was out of focus or missed critical focus. You just gotta suck it up...

Yeah Pocket 4K was never aimed for the same markets as iphone. People doing serious shooting on 4K in Europe and Asia need new camera. I think blackamagic could keep the form factor but add 4K sensor with ability to add autofocus, 120fps full sensor, better dynamic range, builtin ND filters, CFexpress Type B, 1500 nits tilted screen, sony npf batteries. People keep forgetting that MFT means cheap and small lenses and for many people that's very important so MFT camera should stay in lineup.

These are all great product requests and I agree about the M4/3s lenses. I just bought my first one and have been using it on every recent video and nobody has noticed. Cost like 50 bucks or something...

@@cinechimp Also P4K is great for lightweight gimbal setup. You don't need external 5ich screen, you can record raw internally and zoom lenses are tiny. Only problem is really follow focus. Add autofocus and ND and BM can eat most aps-c/fullframe setups for breakfast.

@musar03580
@musar03580 6 месяцев назад
@@cinechimp Since my SIGMA fp arrived only a few days ago, it is too early for me to comment on how I am liking it. But, I can tell you some of the thinking behind my decision to switch from an original BMPCC to a SIGMA fp. My work does not require everyday use of a cinema camera, but I do need to document some of my activities for future reference and occasionally produce instructional content -- and I want to maintain fairly high production standards. For the sake of efficiency, I am investing in simple technology that I hope won't put me on a continual upgrade path and the constant learning curve that comes with every step along the way. So, stability. I am looking for tools that will last and remain useful even decades from now, things I can master, rather than always acquiring the latest and greatest, and forever needing to learn new technology. I bought into the original Pocket Cinema Camera in 2017. Since that time, however, Blackmagic seems to have moved on, replacing the original model with cameras no longer pocketable and constantly changing. And now, it is difficult even to find SD cards usable in the original camera. No longer in production and already obsolete. Time to abandon ship. Then I discovered that SIGMA is producing a small cinema camera I had somehow never noticed before, the SIGMA fp. (There is the SIGMA fp L, as well, but that model seems to be better suited to still photography.) Some have called SIGMA's fp the true successor to the BMPCC OG, and I think this may be right. It is small, easily expandable and rig-ready, full-frame (which is a noteworthy improvement over the BMPCC OG), and shoots in CinemaDNG raw. This is the reason I've migrated from BMD to SIGMA fp.
@cinechimp
@cinechimp 5 месяцев назад
These are all great reasons. I love the OG pocket, its a superb camera, but like you I have had my eye on the Sigma FP as well. Like you I also er towards simpler cameras and workflows, no matter how big or small the project. Theres a lot of bigger channels out there than mine pushing the narrative that you cant get work without the newest camera. For some this may be true and others, not so much. I love new tech and talking about it, but rarely buy unless its lenses, camera accessories and lights. All stuff that can make the cameras I already have perform better for longer.

RE Blackmagic, having owned the BMPCC4K I think they make great cameras. But, I think Blackmagic can still create cameras in box form without having to raise prices that much. The tech is there. Plus, I'd like to see a BM camera with PDAF that can still stay in the price range their current cameras are in.

A refresh of the Pocket 4k is absolutely needed and super necessary. I would easily argue more necessary than the full frame they gave us. A Pocket4k, micro 43rd sensor refreshed sensor, 4.6k resolution, faster readout speeds, a bump in dynamic range, lidar system with autofocus and tracking built into the camera, a vastly improved battery life, flip lcd, smaller, more compact format. Black magic should not be afraid to charge more for a better camera. People will buy them as long as they continue to punch way above their weight class. I think fuji going cinema is a great idea, but do they really need to? The XH2-S already does everything you mentioned. Has a great sensor, shoots braw, prores, prores raw and h265. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the discussion, your in depth knowledge of the industry, and great presentation. Thank you.
