I've always counted gross not net carbs. Since 1995 when I was diagnosed with T2D. But 2017 changed everything for me when I cut out sugar and processed foods and started my low carb life. Before I just counted how many carbs I ate throughout the day. After I started looking at the kind of carbs. It had a huge impact in my health in a very good way. ❤
@@faithburns8379 As a retired family physician, I can tell you my wife and I got one hour nutritional education and all of it was wrong! The tragedy is that the vast majority of doctors are still ignorant and giving out deadly advice. I was one of them until 9-20 and have now studied nutrition and am on keto since then with massive health benefits!
I agree 💯 with you! Yet! I am soooo thankful for Dr.Westman, Amy Berger, and many others that are the voice in the wilderness for those that are awakening and learning we can change our life with our diets (with the scientific studies).
People can see the change in me (245 lbs - 180 lbs), 56 years old and no medications, no more hypothyroidism, halted my progressive blindness (pars planitis retinitis), still no grey hair, robust and physically active, etc. But they won't try a ketogenic diet because I am not a doctor, just a libertarian. 16 years ago, the specialist told me to go home and wait for total blindness because they had done all that they could do. That was when I became the CEO of my own health and wealth. I can't do much about anyone else other than advise when asked but I can pilot my own little boat the best that I can.
I’m going to be 76 on 11/5… I was vegetarian for 35 years.. then a blood test showed I was pre diabetic… now I’m on a meat diet… my blood sugar is normal now.. I have added very low glycemic vegetables.. like cucumbers, spaghetti squash, onion 🧅 and garlic.. I’m looking for low carb fruit but I can’t find many..I have blueberries in the fridge but I only eat a few with Greek yogurt and kefir…
I’m reading Dr Atkin New Revolution diet book… I knew a girl I worked with in the 90s. Who lost a lot of weight… I don’t really need to lose weight.. I just need to keep my blood 🩸 sugar down..
Thanks for another great video Dr Westman. This isn't just a USA problem, we are getting unhealthier every day here in Australia also. Keep up the great content.
@@lootiecruss There is more regulation in the UK and much less sugar in basic foodstuffs. But, there is an accelerating obesity/insulin resistance crisis. Mainly the effects of low wages and poverty are showing in a large section of the population.
The bakery is usually on the perimeter of the store. She talks about ultra processed grains. People don't know what that is. The problem is Carbs. If you don't start with eliminating carbs, you aren't doing it right.
Yes, I found that understanding that carbs are just linked glucose molecules which the body breaks down helped me. I learned which foods were higher in carbs and to read food labels.
I'm another story you can add. In the beginning of the year, I cut out all seed oils and anything processed. I also cut way back my intake of carbs. You could say I'm ketovore. I'm almost 56 years old and have been overweight or obese my entire adult life. I'm still eating three large meals per day but in a ketovore style. I never count calories. Incredibly the weight just started melting off. I went from 250lbs to 172lbs in 10 months and the funniest thing is that I'm never hungry. I never in my wildest dreams would have imagined that eating this way would melt away pounds while still eating three good sized meals per day. I also have definitely not loss any muscle mass either. In fact for the first time in my life I can really see muscle definition specially since I started going to the gym about 2 days per week for an hour. Also, like many other testimonials from people who have switched to this style of eating, I have experienced many of the same health benefits that others have seen. I am never ever going back to eating processed foods or heavy carb foods.
@@cynthiabahena9721 Yep it sure is. Neither of them are vegans though. They do eat meat but they absolultely love their starches and fruit too much to give any of it up. Whole foods may be better than ultra processed but still harmful to health
Grains, high starch veg, not just sugar and fruits upset our insulin. They can choose to remain ill knowing it will get worse Or they can change their diet. OR they can try things like intermittent fasting where they have breakfast later each day until they achieve their goal - starting with 12 hours of no food at all, no smoothies or milk drinks, etc. Because their diet is high in starch they probably won't be able to cope with the hunger they get (insulin resistance causes). Cheese. eggs, would be a good way to get enough good food so they don't get hungry so soon after eating. You will need to do your own research and many sources give incorrect advice. Insulin resistance can be corrected by not eating Grains, Sugars (includes fruit) or seed oils. Also no eating between meals No nutritious drinks between meals like smoothies, milk, etc. I have a friend who decided she would just continue on, eating the way she wants to, willing to face the consequences when they come. Not realising it is a long slow journey of deteriorating and having more illness., disability, pain. Go gently with them but be honest. Give them little steps to get going. Get them to tell you how they feel about meat production so you understand EXACTLY what is behind not eating meat. Then persuade them to do something about it. Support a good cause. Then find a source of meat which does not involve the items which cause them to shun meat. If they say Cruelty to animals, get them to state what that cruelty is exactly. How they treat the animals is not an exact answer, it is general. ❤
Not me! I do carnivore, and at 60, I'm in better shape than most people regardless of age. If I don't procure and cook it, I don't eat it. Food and eating is mere fuel for my body and 95% of the time I take no joy or pleasure in eating, I just eat what I need. I will have a good meal with my family every now and then, but I'm lucky as it doesn't derail my lifestyle. And that's what it is a lifestyle and not a diet. If you want results, you have to change you thinking on eating and how it will affect you. Remember, garbage in, garbage out!
Maybe the sugar, a six pack of Coke a day isn't easy to give up, that's on top of the carbs I ate, but the processed food, I'd say no. I never was much for that crap. Not a big junk food guy either. That's probably the only thing that kept me from weighing 590 pounds with my sugar intake. Honestly, the hardest part for me was overcoming the 50 years of food indoctrination. I now have reversed my thinking and look at sugar and sweets as poison and the enemy of a happy life. They're good at what they do with the dogma. Anyway, good luck with your journey and drown out the noise.
Sanity at last. I reversed all my bloods that were on the wrong side by simply changing my diet. I switched to the carnivore way of life, very strictly, and EVERYTHING got better. I was so thrilled I wanted to change the world by converting everyone I knew to this healthy lifestyle. My son very wisely pointed out” it’s not what you eat Pop but what you don’t eat” For 3 years I have gone from strength to strength but have been happy to eat certain vegetables but no processed anything. At 74 I am fitter and healthier than I was at 50. Apropos big Pharma, I recently amputated the end of my little finger. The reconstruction went well but a raging infection took hold and after three weeks I was back in hospital with a suspected heart attack. This was in part due to the infection overloading my heart. It took 10 courses of antibiotics to knock this horrible bug out. Without big Pharma where would I be. Unfortunately there is no balance in life today, always more, everything is supersized, and as a species we show no common sense, all we need to do to reverse this epidemic of mass suicidal tendencies is to take responsibility for OURSELVES. It is not up to the government’s to dictate policy. If you are happy to munch your way to a horrible death, it’s your choice. People are happy eating what they eat even if it is deleterious. Smoking, hardcore drugs , toxic chemicals on our skin are all accepted by those that will not see the light. Unfortunately only when it’s too late they may want to change. That’s my two bits worth. Inform but don’t enforce.
You are correct however at the root of it all is addiction. It's very very hard, if not impossible, to kick carb addiction without being aware of the issue. In fact carb addiction is the hardest addiction to kick, harder even than heroin or tobacco.
Dr W, you are fantastic, reasonable and calm. I saw a YT video about someone who pretty much eats only his own produce for vegetables. He does eat meat, but did an experiment in which he ate only potatoes for a couple of months. He pointed out that he lost muscle mass and felt better when he went back to meat. BTW, pork rinds are in the center of the grocery store, next to the potato chips. 😮
Autism - it's not just the USA . I worked in the UK NHS in medical imaging . In the last decade I was concerned that so many paediatric patients coming in were labelled autistic and / or ADHD . No one seemed concerned by this .
Dr. Westman is saying that new foods or highly processed foods are safe until proven to be harmful seems rather backwards. New foods and highly processed foods should have to be proven to be healthy before they are put on the market! They are obviously not needed by anyone, as they are not natural for us. Otherwise, I always enjoy these videos.
100% agree with you! Protect our children and the poor. I am not for big government either but that is what government is for to protect the innocents!
Basically, anything that comes in a package with a nutritional list, is a processed food. I think it makes sense to just try as much as possible to make your own meals from scratch ingredients, and avoid sugars as much as possible.
I agree with Dr. Westman. Eliminate carbs which includes ultra processed foods. But there are so called healthy carbs - ie fruit - people won't cut out if they're just told don't eat processed foods.
@@janicemorris1585 Indeed. Many whole fruit that have fiber are nutritious - avocados, olives, strawberries, blackberries. It’s when they’re juices and pulverized that fruits contribute to glucose spikes and advanced glycation end-products.
Have lowered my carbs by one half. Still another problem on the horizon is the FDA allowing food manufacturers to put in nano-particals in food if regular sized parts of the same food has been approved. Nano-particals can get through the brain blood barrier. Could result in new illnesses ??
Change is very disturbing for most people. They don't know how or where to start their journey of transformation. This "keto movement " started out strong. I see it devolving & getting weaker, giving in, and compromising in wrong ways. Stay strong & keep following the light especially sun light.
I agree, eating whole food is much healthier than junk food...HOwEvEr......if you want to lose weight, you can't do better than keto-carnivore. Since keeping my carb intake under 20g/day, I do not feel hungry or peckish at all!!!! Wish I knew this years ago!
IMO, the best recommendation to give someone who wants to become a more healthy eater would to tell them follow your low carb keto protocol and to direct them to your website and videos to learn how to do it.
Thank you Dr Westman. Yes, we need to eat protein, animal fat, and low carbs (less than 20 g per day). We also need to address carb addiction. Children developing T2D and fatty liver screams carb addiction. It’s needs to be discussed, just like alcoholism was finally openly discussed and managed. Sugar and drugs stimulate the pleasure centers of our brains in very similar ways. Carb addiction is a very serious problem, but folks think it’s a joke term. Thank you Dr Westman for your work. ❤ people have adopted keto eating and have vastly improved their health!! We have hope!!!
We need as many credible spokesperson's that we can muster so don't throw away a perceived former Democrat liberal who no longer has his head stuck in the sand. None of us got here without being fooled and eating wrong. We had to experience the pain and illnesses caused by the lies of our trusted scientist and government to awake and push back. When we see the bad results of that trust how can we not welcome any support to counter and change the course that we are on from a former enemy? This course of dietary suicide must be changed or we are heading to total collapse of our whole civilization. When half the children are born with major brain disorders will result in the collapse of everything around the world. This extinction is not long in the future if we do nothing.
MAHA- Focus on the big levers. 1. Pickup Germany’s drug prices and force them on the drug schedule. 2. Use the European list of approved ingredients. 3. Use the European lists of approved pesticides for food. 4. Ban all big food and Pharma donations to medical schools, government employees, politicians. 5. Start a new food panel for the pyramid. 1 year to recommend Whole Foods. 6. Onshore critical meds factories.
Dr Westman. I still need to get into your clinic; I'm local and would love the advice. Curious if I should go the Humana route or maybe even VA since they work with Duke. I kinda had a fresh food 4 months with fruit and veg and trying to get back to carnivore at least 30 days and move from there. Who does like RFK; he's about the people at least health wise. One thing people need to understand politics aren't completely agreeing 100% with someone but in big things like health and taking care of the people. I'm there with Lilly I don't think I'm a carnivore only for life but eating healthy paying attention to sugars and oxalates etc.
Diabetes rate in Northern Italy: 3.2%. Avg male lifespan in North Italy 80 years. Longest lived Provinces 1) Florence 2) Rimini 3) Monza. Most traditional recipes have 4 to 7 ingredients. People make them at home from Raw ingredients. Go to a bookstore open an Italian cookbook. Count number of ingredients in recipes. Compare with cookbooks from other cuisines and count their ingredients. If the light bulb does not light up in your head, go to a Northern Italian city and see how many morbidly obese people you see in the streets. Do this research on your own.
@@alessandrotestori5396 what you are saying is mostly true in principle. However Italy is not spared from the junk food tsunami, the wave is swelling there too. Large cities with busy people not taking the time to cook exist there too. You can't only use rural areas as examples.
I was at a grocery store the other day... dairy products had been moved to an *inside* oil, while bread, chips and junk foods had migrated to the outside. Better not say "shop the perimeter" any more.
Vast majority follows an authority consensus. Hard to blame them. Who has time or interest in investigating for themselves. Especially with sugar coated brain. But the most challenging or rather insurmountable challenge for the majority is to acknowledge that they have been lied to.
We know without a study that Ultra processed food should be avoided. Protein builds muscles so I make sure its what I eat most. Startch and sugar are not my friends. Avoid the carbs is right.
I've lost 49 kg (108 lb) by eating meats, fish, eggs, dairy (except milk) and a lot of fat. 22 kg (48 lb) to go. When I'm there I'm switching to keto for life. (Btw, cured my type 2 diabetes, HbA1c 37 mmol/mol (5.5%))
That’s good to know about the NMR test, that it’s overkill. I was talking to my new gynecologist yesterday and she scolded me about my high LDL but when I told her that I was on keto and had lost 49 pounds on it, and that, with all due respect my HDL and trigs are great, she backed off. I was so happy that I didn’t have to have yet another argument about cholesterol, especially since she’s a great doctor and I want to stay with her.
Notice if you sense any ill effects from a food...energy drops, sugar spikes/crashes, abdominal pains etc., you are your best source to know how you are feeling. In other words, listen to your body.
The bacon company made their product with extra sugar to attract folks hooked on sugars! Carb addiction is not discussed much, but it is a serious and real condition.
Lily is young so she has not seen the results of eating too many carbs and fruit. I am carb intolerant which I determined with a CGM after being diagnosed with prediabetes. I also cured my IBS/Gerd by removing grains and starch, doctors prescribed pharms not food education. I never stopped eating meat fortunately, I did succumb to ultra processed food for convenience years ago. While it is confusing with all the noise, critical thinking is key. Whole Foods, nothing processed and make sure they are not sprayed with pesticides. If your body is damaged you may have to go keto or carnivore with hope it will heal. My relatives and friends are shocked when I say, I do not have a disease nor do I take medication at 70.
Here I disagree with dr westman about not having proof that the industry is not being malicious . I talk to people constantly who consume the sad diet. They say that today's food is so bad and they acknowledge that the industry should do things differently, but they still continue eating these foods. Responsibility from the makers, enforcers, and consumers is sensible nowadays. It doesn't take a genius to understand these principles today.
I jus cry and cry knowing now that we poisoned my mum with bread and cake and sweet tea who had vascular dementia and sky high blood pressure and when we could no longer cope, the care home ( which broke the family bank) did the same 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Autism, obesity and malnutrition are huge problems not just in the US. The UK is also like this. Some kids you think their legs will snap this a gust of wind.
My wife has balance issues so saw a neurologist yesterday. Guy was late 40s insulin resistant pudgy belly. Was most concerned about her cholesterol even though her HDL and triglyceride both 72 and her A1C 5.2. This guy deals with AD and has no clue it is caused by a lifetime of blocking keytone production. So sad.
As far as I am concerned, all you need to do is look at the history of the rise of the current epidemics of diabetes, dementia, heart disease, cancers from the 1900's to today against the deceptions and conspiracies jointly employed by big food, big pharma, insurance, the owners of hospitals and medical boards/government, health organisations (diabetes, heart, cancer foundations etc) over the same time periods utilising the massive flows of cash and funding to enrich the people at the heads of those that put money and profit ahead of peoples lives and health and you'll know what they've done to the world's population. They control everything, including governments from lobbying and the power they have to make or break politicians. They've got the world addicted to sugars and sweet things so they can profit from people's suffering as a result of their unscientific lies they conned people to believe in. Cinnamon and added sugar to bacon is just one example of how they keep people ill
I classify foods in three ways: (1) unprocessed single ingredient foods (an apple or a roasted chicken, for instance); processed foods that are traditionally created in the kitchen (roasted coffee, bread, cheese, yogurt, jams and preserves, all foods that were originally made at home from scratch); and (3) ultra-processed, or foods with more than four ingredients that cannot be created at home because of the complexity of the food and the vast industrial equipment needed to process it. I can make granola or bread and brew refreshing iced tea or a drinkable beer, I can even whip up a close approximation of potato chips, but good luck creating Cheeto Cheeze Puffs, Count Chocula cereal, or Coca-Cola. I think that anything that I can't make at home from simple single ingredients constitutes "ultra processed." BTW, not to ramp up the paranoia even more, "Big Food" is now 100% owned by the tobacco companies. The tobacco companies did not go away when cigarettes were effectively banned from public spaces; they simply bought the food companies and applied the same tactics they used to stall cigarette legislation to food. William Morris buys and pays for junk science. Over40% of the funding for the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the national organization that issues the RD credentials, comes from the Coca Cola Company. The tobacco companies did not go away, they simply bought big food and are applying the same scurrilous tactics to junk food that they did to tobacco.
Not that I promote potato chips, but my granddaughter loves them with some guacamole so I buy the kind that are avocado oil, potatoes, and sea salt. For her because she has them at home. I went to look at the ones that have other taste of them like barbecue potato chips and they’re loaded with sugar now they add sugar to potato chips!!! How ridiculous is that that’s how far they’ll go to make us all diabetics. Of course you eat chips daily and all these process foods you will be anyway, but I just thought it was ludicrous!
I think all grains, starchy veggies, and high carb fruit need to go for someone metabolically unhealthy. Someone really sick may need to limit milk products, eggs, processed meats, drink only water.
@@JoanMcDermott-rj8vb I don’t buy apples from the store. I live in France, in a small village far away from everything. I know the difference so I have given up on most fruits unless I find them growing wild near by. I am also a handicap taking care of myself.
When the science (research grants) is controlled by food and pharma how can the science catch up? Throw in the lobbyist in DC and it is a monumental task to determine what health truly is.
RFK’s claims about increasing autism rates ignores the number of undiagnosed adults with autism. These people when accused of bad behavior were given a swat on the rear and devised coping methods.
Lol. If autism can be overcome with a swat on the rear, why is it now illegal basically to do it? Adults don't have undiagnosed autism. That's a straw man argument. People with autism cant function properly, there is no "coping" around it.

@@LauraB.335labeling is useful when it gives us information about how to understand someone. Most neurodivergence isn't treated with drugs, though sometimes they can help. I'm grateful we are now learning some of the ways diet and lifestyle can help too. I'd rather a human be labeled as autistic if that helps us understand their behavior in a compassionate and accommodating way. Especially since the alternative for so long was to "label" them as weirdo, freak, retard, etc and then proceed to treat them cruelly and exclude them from society. It's possible for 2 things to true at the same time. In this case, to acknowledge that neurodivergence (natural variations in the ways brains work) has always existed and probably at greater numbers than were previously understood. AND at the same time to acknowledge that certain factors about our modern environment seem to be making things worse for these specific people and their uniquely vulnerable brains.
You're wrong about the need for more studies to make a change. There should be an immediate reset back before the food perimid because there were no studies.
Many women discover that fat, not protein, comes first when it comes to health. Yes, avoid carbs. But a diet that has more protein than fat can also be problematic. Have you done studies comparing diets of women with hormonal issues such as PCOS in regards to protein/ fat ratios? Is your emphasis on protein a "scientific" statement?
Question: are we actually waiting for THOSE people to change their minds about killing all of us through food or we realised what's happening and eat food our ancestors called food??? I know that's what I do. I'm never handing over my life and my children's lives to cash hungry people
Where is the science that says "carbs" are bad. I seem to remember several people who have gone on a potato diet, lost a lot of weight, greatly improved their blood tests, and had no negative results. Maybe you remember the Duke Rice Diet. From the research I have done, the problem is eating too much fat and too many carbs together. People restricting fat, and people restricting carbs, can both be healthy options. I don't know of any culture that historically ate as much saturated fat as most people on a carnivore diet do.
You need to dig deeper on the benefits of saturated fat and how it is used to build every child and is now needed to maintain our mitochondria for every human. When our whole metabolism relies on fats with a much smaller amount of protein with no carbs needed or used why would you think that we need them? When our liver turns meat protein into glucose to maintain a steady amount in our blood at all times any amount of carbs raises the glucose above requirements and cause an insulin spike to lower it and when it can no longer lower it is when cellular damage impacts every major component of the body. Eyes, kidneys and extremities are destroyed. The condition we call diabetes is now an epidemic of greater proportions than the black plague, spanish flu or covid which is killing thousands a day around the world. There are other mitochondrial problems that are commonly known as Cancer's. Every diagnosis of cancer is largely a result of mitochondrial damage caused by carbs. When diagnosed patients stop eating the sugar and eat a lot of saturated fats the cancer is gone within a few months. Do a search on YT on cancer remissions on keto/carnivore to see lots of post from all around the world. Dr.Thomas Seyfried,Phd,Boston College professor who wrote a book on his research. Lots of studies proving cancer is metabolic and not genetic. He's still ignored by oncologist. When your paycheck relies on you not learning facts you will ignore those facts.

Dr Westman can you please explain BMI and ideal body weight and what a person should shoot for as far as body weight, based on height and age ect. Thank you
Don't fret too much about BMI. Rather, aim for a waist circumference that is half or less of your height. And if you do blood work, a TG to HDL ratio of 2 or less.
Do the research. RFK Jr. has Spasmodic Dysphonia, which affects his voice. I applaud him for fighting for what he believes in spite of the neurological condition he has, which could have easily dissuaded him from being in the public eye.

Not to mention, he’s endorsing a felon and the most inept, unqualified candidate in American history.
Picking up a dead bear cub in the woods and driving the carcas to NY to abandon near a bike in Central Park seems crazy. Also carrying the body of a large dead fish atop his car for miles seems a bit strange too.

How are we supposed to work toward the same goal if we keep dismissing people based on usually inconsequential things? Don’t need to keep making it into an attack on personalities.
I disagree. The idea that we should completely remove whole fruits, vegetables, and legumes from our diets is nonsense. Human beings evolved as omnivores - we benefit from a diversity of food sources. We benefit from the protein in meat. We benefit from the different mineral, nutrients, and fiber in fruits in vegetables.
Show me that balanced diet and I will show you 100 million diabetics. Diversity of your food source and suddenly there is no diversity of species across the whole world. Extinctions are continuing every moment that a farmer is hosing down the crops with poisons.
