Today we address the age old question, can you use 500cp mantles in a 200cp lantern?
I like testing things like this, if you've been wondering about something and want me to try it out put a message down in the comments.

Oh it's been a long, long time since I lit a lantern. The other day I noticed some Peerless mantles on my bench. Maybe it's time to fire one up and take in some Coleman meditation. Thanks for another great, well thought out video!!

I stumbled upon an ebay listing for 100 of the chinese made "butterfly" brand mantles and put in a stupid low offer...like $12...and they accepted. I use them to do my test runs after rebuilding a lantern and I was blown away at how bright they are on my 300 series Colemans (335/321/325). Just blinding and actually better than the 99 they are supposed to use. But a 1111 or 11 just don't compare. I recently got a large lot of silk-lites in all sizes and I was shocked to find ones with brown tops instead of the blue or green all the other Coleman mantles have. They are in original silk-like packs (pre barcode era) and still sealed so I am confident they are genuine. What was even more amazing to me is that they are completely cold to my geiger counter. All the other silk-lites are "hot" but these ones do not register at all. They burn in like regular silk-lites but have the same yellow colour as modern yttrium mantles. I cannot find any info on when Coleman might have made these. They are definitely not the gold top ones either.

Seeing as Peerless 2CHG's are a little hard to come by at the moment,that's a great piece of advice! Thanks for your video's Kurt!

I did a little research on mantle prices and found that 111s are much easier to get right now and slightly cheaper...

I gambled and ordered a bunch of really cheap mantles from China. They looked to be 21 size in the listing, but turned out to be much larger, like 111 size. Good to know they might still work. I'll tie them high on the burner if I have to.
@LanternLabs

Have you tried yet? I've got some really large mantles that get really small when they're burned. They start like #111 but burn down to the size of a #20 which is smaller than a #21.

@@LanternLabs I burned a couple last night in a Unimet GL-3 (200a size lantern). Craziest thing I realized is the cheapo mantles vary slightly in size within the same batch! Looks like they work fine though. Slightly longer than a 21 when burned-in unless I tie high on the burner in which case I get a final size around that of a 21, but they work in either configuration. They don't form as nicely as my Coleman brand mantles, but they burn plenty bright. Couldn't see a difference in brightness side-by-side with my 200a with a #21.

I tried this on a propane fixture in my cabin and it failed. That lamp doesn't make enough heat for the job.

Propane has fewer BTUs than gas but with a proper gas jet should produce enough heat. The problem is also getting in enough air...

PS, i ran 111's all day on a 220, shrank up nice and have better output. It would be a little tight to service gen if need be though.

Good morning, I have a question, what other peerless mantle functions like a Lancaster ? Thank you . I appreciate all your helpful advice

As far as I know "Lancaster" mantles were made by Peerless when production was still in the Philippines.

I tried this a while back with Coleman 111 mantels on a 295. If anything I though it was dimmer. In the end I just ended up wasting two good 111's

So do you find that for a given 220/228 lantern that the 111’s are noticeably brighter than the standard size 2C-HG or Silk Lite 21’s? Cool video. Thx

should your coleman lantern lantern fount get hot
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 3 года назад
They all get warm to the touch after running for awhile. The newer lanterns with their plastic valve block have a heat shield to limit the temp the plastic gets to. The temp of the fount will vary on a lot of factors including how much fuel is in there. It shouldn't get too hot to touch although I've heard of some that do. I'd be nervous of a fount that was too hot to touch...

Are the larger mantels on the lantern in this video producing significantly more or brighter light?
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 2 года назад
Not significantly. It's more but not enough to be worth it. The larger mantles are more expensive and more delicate when attached to the small burners.

I have a Coleman 295 that uses #21 mantles. I have a lot of #20 mantles left from another lantern. Can I use the #20 mantles on the 295? It's rather confusing, but from what I understand the #20 will not be as bright, but will work. But as cheap as they are, should I just buy some #21s?
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 4 года назад
Its your lantern give it a try! #20s are only a little smaller than #21, they'll be fine. In fact I think I've got a 220 lantern with #20s on it. Check out "You CAN'T do that with a Coleman Lantern" where I run #21s in place of #111 mantles.

How do i identify the diff between a 200a gen and a 220 gen? i have a batch of the gens (all either 200a or 220), are the gen bodies the same dimensions?
@LanternLabs
@LanternLabs 5 лет назад
The 200a gen necks down at the gas tip. The tip is different too but I don't remember the markings.
@capcon6
@capcon6 4 года назад
I'm pretty sure that the 200a's are a bit smaller than the 220 generators.

I mostly use whatever mantle I can reach when I need one. I've got a mix around here.

@@LanternLabs I don't get why they stopped making the thorium mantles, unless someone is dumb enough to eat them, or directly inhale the exhaust that comes off the lit mantle it is harmless, but we got idiots that easy tide pods so I guess some people might try to eat them.
