Something a little different this time, a Tilley x246. Tilley made all sorts of different lanterns over the years but the x246 is the classic that most people think of when they think Tilley lantern.
This lantern was mostly complete so this was mostly just a cleanup although I did have to replace the pump cup.
The kit I use is from the Fettlebox: fettlebox.co.uk/stove-parts.html
I want to give special thanks to the folks over on the Classic Pressure Lamps forum classicpressurelamps.com for the help they gave me in identifying the approximate date of manufacture for this lamp. I also want to apologize for repeatedly calling it a lantern when I know Tilley's are properly referred to as lamps.

An excellent video, in fact, far better than some English fiddlers and "restorers" who seem incapable of understanding how a Tilley works; they are bent on exposing the brass and vandalising the enamel on the chimney with sand blasters. Liked your forensics, too. One point, loading the pre-heat torch is best done in a jar filled with meths (you may even buy copies of the 1950's jar at prices on eBay similar to the mentioned vapourisers!)). Well done.

I have a jar, I store the torch in the jar when I'm not using it but I usually don't keep any alcohol in the jar. I find my squirt bottle so handy for so many things. "Best" is a tough word, for what I'm doing the squirt bottle is just handy and I don't have to keep multiple containers filled. I too was a "brass exposer" at one point, I've learned the error of my ways now.

I just Googled it and the internets attribute "dooblydoo" in reference to the description to Wheezywaiter...

The thing I found with the Coleman 'Dual fuel' lamps is the mantle tends to get broken easier as it is only held at the top. Only managed to get 1-2 fishing trips from each mantle, whereas the Tilley Guardsman would last the whole season until it was stripped and serviced. But I did like the ability to use Unleaded fuel the Coleman, as it made less things to pack Plus less messing about to prime & light.

Thanks again Kurt. Now, can anyone tell me if the Austramax has the same size pip in its NRV as a Petromax? I was hoping it would share this with a Tilly since they use the same small pump cup but unfortunately I found this not to be true.

I just bought a Tilley and was looking for tips on how to restore it, which lead me to this video. It has no torch however, but I think mabe I could turn a cup from aluminum and use that for starting it, I have a lathe so it opens up some possibilities.

The torches are available, there are some on ebay right now. They're expensive but last and last. I've only ever had that one.

Hay Curt Nice work, I was under the impression that there is a brass washer after the pump washer and before the threaded collar.

If you say so. Who knows if this one had one and it got lost...

Great video, I noticed that the lamp was pulsing, I have just rebuilt 3 and they all do the same is this standard or is it a problem?

Tilley lanterns are fantastic, more forgiving than the germanic tribes of petromax, aida, etc> British export customs does not like the smell of kerosene, had several returned to sender in the UK as a Yank trying to buy from across the pond.

Where did you get the reproduction globe for the Tilley 246 lamp?

eBay, it's from South Korea and seems to be of very good quality.

What is a dooblydoo?

The description. Dooblydoo is a term I first heard John Green of vlogbrothers say. I don't know if he coined it but its a RU-vidr kinda thing. I had forgotten to add the link, thanks for reminding me.
