Bloody hell, the landlord need her head testing, she is lucky anyone is leasing her units at all in this current climate, and she is lucky to have people like you running your business from there because the site always looks clean and tidy an a landlords these days would give the right arm to have tenants like you! The mind boggles but probably the push you need to better your business!
The point is that she has already let the unit. There is nothing in the car sales for her, as that element is effectively a sub-let between the tenant and chops. Seems like all parties are understanding of the situation, which is good, because after all, it's a little bit self inflicted as car sales are not allowed from the site, which was known beforehand. Good that she's giving some time to sort it out and relocate.
Other unit do the sales, and for very little cost that we will cover it could have change of use approved, but she does not want to. As you say though that is entirely her prerogative as the owner
There’s a unit going at chivenor, right at the back next door to propaints. It’s got an indoor unit and a lock up external space for approx 20-25 small cars. I got some bodywork done 2 weeks ago at pro paints and the other company were moving out that day. He said they didn’t have a new tenant but that was 2 weeks ago. Worth a look.
Found this video in the recommended section! This is exactly the kind of thing in my end goal plans! Just subscribed and will definitely be checking out previous videos :)
Two car sold..... goodwill. Hard luck about the sales but if their getting dirty from the yard next door may as well move. Or just store them there and sell from home. She can’t really complain about you storing them. Good vid. Thank for sharing.
Be careful with selling them from home, depending on how hot your council is you may have to get planning permission for change of use from residential to business or at least add it to your use. You may also have issues with your home insurance and you don't want to give them any excuse to have an easy out if you were to make a claim.
Hi James hope you are staying safe and well and sorry to hear about the problems with your landlord and hope you can find a new unit soon and good luck with finding a new unit
Came across your channel by chance and I must say your customer service is second to none. You take time and care about your customers and I wish you all the luck in the future and hope you find somewhere suitable. Your current landlord is losing a great tenant and probably won’t find another like you . Good luck.
Good luck, mate. might be the best thing moving on with your business. 👍 BTW You can apply those long decals wet, squeeze out ther water with a squeegee and they stick perfectly, you can move them about while they are wet. There is plenty on youtube about how to. Might be handy for the next time you have to so some.
A tip on the trim, tie a peice of string and pull it to the side out of the ,otherwise i love your channel always interesting, keep up you deserve to be rewarded for your hard work and dedication, hard work and honesty 👍speaking as a mechanic of 45 years +.
Think a free repair on the Corsa as it was basically a glue job is good business sense for goodwill especially as they've been good customers. You're being generous on that Alto putting a warranty on it...I'd expect the 30 day or 1000 miles if I bought that and the customer pays for anything beyond that. Shame the landlord has put the brakes on but to be fair I guess it wasn't in the terms of the rental, fair of them not to put an immediate stop. Guess it's just forced your hand to take the steps you were going to take anyway, wish you luck James on finding somewhere more suitable.
Good luck with finding a new unit. I really enjoy watching your videos. Your a really honest and kind dealer who go's out of his way to help people. Another good product for interior dressing is poorboys natural look dressing :)
White Vauxhall Corsa - definitely free of charge, repeated customer, word of mouth goes along way towards a good reputation. - But it wouldn’t hurt them to place a £10 note in your tea boat or supply you with a few packets of biscuits!! It’s a real shame about having to find another location ......but “every cloud has a silver lining” .... are there any petrol stations locally that have just closed down, they might make an ideal car sales area? You come across as being an extremely hard working person - and very determined to succeed, it could be the making of you! All the best! 👍🙏
Only just found your channel, so I’m playing catch up with your uploads.. Glad you did the expansion bottle fix with no charge. Given that they’ve bought previous cars.. putting out goodwill and positive karma will be reciprocated just when you need it 👍🏼 Appreciate the effort it takes to work on cars and film at the same time! 👊🏼
Goodwill, but I would give an advisory that if unfortunately the customer breaks it, they pay for it. They sound like good customers , so good customer service is 🔑
Kieran, don't know where in Sussex you are, but West Sussex I know there's lots of unused barns. Maybe worth looking down lanes and having a chat with farmers 🤷 As long as you're polite to them and not suspicious looking you should be alright lol 😂
Units that like the motor trade are rare, especially in Devon!, we are also trying to find storage (also in Devon)but unless you’re sat on a stack of cash pretty tough.
Onwards and upwards for yourself now. It may seem harsh she’s told you to wind down on car sales. But in truth you would be better off in a bigger unit where the cars can be kept inside. It would make viewing in winter more pleasurable for potential customers. I manage in a retail environment myself and find if items are displayed correctly, even things that sell in low volumes. They will sell if displayed and priced competitively. As for the header tank, do it in good will.
Good luck finding a new sales pitch, same happened to a local guy I know, he’d rented the same place for 20 yrs! He ended up buying an ex main dealer site - which included Eastern European car valets living on the premises. Worked out ok for him in the end!
Definitely do ot charge the customer for Fixing the knocking noise as they are regulars and will appreciate you fixed something outside the warranty period.
Next time the Autosmart guy comes around, order 5 litres of "FINISH" It's a great dressing for all your plastics, tyres engine bay plastics etc. Plus it smells nice. Squirts some on to a clean new sponge and wipe the dash/ plastics etc.
A mate of mine had same problem so he got a unit and sold car in the front part with some nice lights and did repairs at the back half and never looked back maybe it'll work for yourself .
Definitely good will on the white Vauxhall it was only a hour of time for a what seems a repeat customer. I’ve been to a lot garages and they are on farms where it is cheap and plenty of space and in Devon I would imagine you could pick and choose. As a customer going out a little way is not an issue as you about to spend £1,000’s. Anyway good luck in your search for new premises
Brilliant video. I like the way you present your videos. I have been watching for a few months now. All I can say absolutely brilliant. You need to show your face in the video. I am curious to know who is behind the camera. Regarding the land lady who does not want you to sell your out side the premises. What is her problem you are paying her rent for the premises you are working in.
You are such a nice guy, and I like your videos. I would like to give you some friendly advice: Appearance is everything. And to be honest, your shop doesn't look very professional and would probably not pass a fire inspection. In your next shop, throw some fresh paint on the walls and get some proper shelves, so you don't need to have everything on the floor, it doesn't look very good. And throw out the trash every day instead of collecting it in the corners. This will make a good impression on customers as well. I really hope you don't take this the wrong way, just trying to help. I used to have a shop for many years and in the beginning it looked a lot like your place, then I had some fire inspectors come visit me one day together with the land lord and they were not impressed to say the least. Oil, paper and sparks is a disaster waiting to happen. Put yourself in your landlords situation, would you like to be responsible for that? I cleaned up the place and did some investments, best thing I ever did, working in a clean and nice space is so much better for you. Good luck mate!
Cheers! Well one issue is the unit is not mine, its Stewarts and he won't mind me saying is not a tidy person, but his garage his decision. My own place would be very different yes
Perhaps a move will be the next big step. Be brave, it'll be hard but will pay off massively I'm sure. Good luck and we'll be with you all the way. 👍👍👍🏴🇬🇧
Perfectly acceptable to charge for it but I’d give it to them in good will. Especially they are repeat buyers. A few quid isn’t worth the word of mouth they will spread around and potential third car from you when needed.
In the current economic climate, that's a bit crap from the landlord. Hope you find the perfect place to build your business and channel soon. Only discovered your channel a couple of months ago but really enjoy the videos. Best of luck with finding a unit and the move.
The vast majority of Bona fide motor traders prep the cars properly. Gone are the days when you threw a bucket of water over it and put a bandage on the exhaust. It's went full circle where almost every niggle has to addressed whereas the private sellers are expecting retail money for a car that hasn't even been cleaned properly let alone mechanically inspected on a ramp.
Sometimes a change of location can give you a wider perspective of what you’re trying to achieve, if you’re new place is easy to find or in a place where people are passing them that has to be a good thing
Hi James,as for the corsa we would do it as good will.As for the car sales look at it as being positive,we found a pitch on a island in a medium size town with a four bay worksop,we never had to pay to advertise our cars, problem we had was finding stock and prepairing it quick enough, best of luck and hope you are sorted quickly, onwards and upwards.IT,s the same all over the country know one wants motor trade,to high a risk to much mess a lot of the time.
I just closed my small car dealership today .could not take the Mental abuse no more-money isn’t everything... used to b worries about selling cars .now worries about. Using them -that’s enough for me
Planning permission rules were recently changed - merging some categories and splitting others (though also depends what is in the lease agreement), Also I presume no sale prices are shown on the cars so its tricky to prove where advertising for and contract etc actually made. I guess what the use of the units is intended for is the mechanical workshop - which is what they are being used for bar the final five mins of cash changing hands !
A good boss of mine said you can provide free service but it has to have some value.. in your case provide it free but make sure you detail the cost on the invoice and that you have provided it free of charge out of warranty. Customer realises your a good guy and comes back
Totally get your point about losing the support network you've got at the current unit, but agree a larger site will give you more opportunities to build up stock. Onwards and upwards ☑️
Just come across your great channel, In the early 90s I used to buy and sell Audi coupe gt's, the 1982-91 models Ur 10 value and the later 20 valve turbo Quattro's. If only had known then because these cars are rare but worth a bloody fortune now. I have now bought an early low mileage Audi TT and one of the first generation of the Ford focus that I will store as an investment because they are going to be a future classics and worth good money within the next 10 or so years, its better than having the money in the bank. Keep up the good work and all the best for the future.
Crystal ball. I had 205gti would be worth 25k now! My friend has an Audi coupe '92 worth nothing (2k)! Chops little Rallye could be worth a bit in 10 years though...
@@rosbifsa660 I think most of the Audi coupes after 91 ant worth much because of the new body shape even though some had the pre 20v engine in them. I had an H reg metallic blue 1.9 gti pug wished I had kept that now. I think the 1.6 are worth more for some reason.
Rob mine was the 1.6 and ‘86. So ore facelift which was the better body too - lower, more squat. The 1.9 was a monster in comparison but I think a lot ended up wrapped around trees.
@@rosbifsa660 lol that's true my 1.9 was the very light but quick. Friend of mine had a 1.9 309 gti and that was much more stable not as scatty as the pug. We did have some good times though. I got interested in the Audi quattro and pugs way back in the early mid 80s watching the group B rally cars speed through Dalby forest UK 2am in the morning Best decade of true rally cars.
If it were me i would do the header tank as goodwill, repeat custom is a blessing and should be treasured. That one freebie could lead to plenty of sales. As for the premises, onwards and upwards. I hope you find something soon and it allows you to expand. The world needs a few more honest used car dealers.
Corsa expansion tank. I would actually charge but not much obviously but time did go into understanding the issue before fixing it. Fair play this is the 2nd car they purchased but customers should be expected to pay since it is out of warranty and their loyalty and repeat business should not be based upon you giving free work out of goodwill.
Hope you can find somewhere local, with the facilities you need. Shame the landlady feels that way, at least you know that you have people back at the current site. You can always go to, for Mots, parts an help etc..
If the Landlord knowingly accepts rent despite your infringement of the user clause then it could be seen as effective acceptance. Similarly, if you can show the premises are not used for the visiting public then one assumes you remain compliant with planning as well as the user clause. This could just be managing agents doing their duty? Maybe no further action?
No car sales on site and she doesn't even want car repairs on site didn't bode well for the future. I hope you find a larger unit that suits you, preferably somewhere with a bit of cover to keep sales cars clean.
Nosy and petty landlords always in their tenant's business are a serious headache. Dealt with a few myself unfortunately. She has a garage unit but she doesn't really want garages? No car sales? Why? I would understand things that affect the property negatively, but obviously car sales go along with running a garage, it's just ridiculous sometimes.
Just for your information the decals on the rear should be more in the middle of the rear light and rear screen. And the front decal does look too short their are loads of images online for you to look at.
You should add your labour/time, parts and rent to the costs. Brings your profit down = less VAT to pay. VAT is only on the profit on 2nd hand goods I believe.
@@ChopsGarage Oh that sucks if you buy a bad one that you need to put a lot of time and money in to, but at least it's only 16.67%, and not the full 20%.
What a stupid attitude from a landlord. You would think in the current climate with businesses failing they would be glad of the income. Very short sighted.
The issue is we don't know why the landlord doesn't want car sales there. There could be a very good reason or even a legal reason. Also she never hid the fact that she didn't want car sales from the premises and it is her property at the end of the day - however shortsighted it seems. That said for someone who doesn't want car sales or even a workshop she has done well to have four car related business on her land! Doesn't look ideal for tea rooms either...
lol, tea rooms! There is no legal issue other sell motorbikes and cars here. But she is being open that she does not like automotive and wants to reduce it, she has taken over from her father
I would not charge for that it's only cost your time , I would always say in these positions if customer buys the parts and you fit them both sides should be happy , you haven't spent any money and the customer has a cheeper bill
Worst comes to the worst sell from the Home mate for 2/3 months make sure the new place ticks a few of your boxes. But really think you have made a lot of connections where you are just now so they will always last but fingers crossed you find somewhere soon mate. Really wish you good luck! Tbf mate would do it for goodwill different if it was cost of a part or that but repeat customers/possible passing a good review worth its weight in gold. G101 is good and covers loads of cleaning wise with the car but I use Finish a product from AutoSmart for the Interiors or AeroSpace 303. Tyres I use Autosmarts Highstyle Dressing would highly recommend. Seat wise again buy just a 5l drum of solution from eBay with a nice scent and I use a Bissel Spot Clean Pro another little magic tool!
@@rezazare4591 I genuinely dont know, the chances of ever finding a place to set a garage up and get a mortgage on it are long gone (certainly where I'm living anyway), I looked at renting a railway arch on the outskirts of Manchester just big enough for 1 ramp, with all the costs involved it would easily be £20000 just for the rent and rates.
@@rezazare4591 I enquired and told them I would be running a well presented workshop/sales business but they just obviously class the car trade as all scrap yard/breaker type places, shame really as for the right rent and lease I would happily start my own business
