I haven't bought an expensive car in years. My last car was a £160 Passat Estate 130bhp TDi with a blown head gasket. Fixed it for £300 and still have it 10 years later. Last year I bought a 2005 Passat 130 TDi Highline with full leather trim and black paint for £225. Just needed a full set of brakes and a few minor bits and pieces. I fixed it and stuck 2 wings on it too, as it only had 120k miles on it. Final cost was £675 and after a few days cleaning it's like a new car

I’ve been a car dealer for 13 dealers. Back then everyone sold the cheaper cars as part exchanges to clear, they were cheap and the majority of buyers were ok. They knew if the engine blew or of clutch went they’d get a refund. There’s no way we could do that now. Expectations are too high, you’d just be setting yourself up for trouble. The reality for most reputable dealers is there’s no love lost. A customer buying a 20k car is much easier to deal with than someone buying a 2k car.

Back in the early 2000's I was regularly buying circa 12 year old family cars such as Sierra's, Cavaliers etc for as little as £50 in the trade, they were usually with long MOT's fairly presentable and useable. This was back when we had to pay to have scrap cars removed because they were worthless. Then in about 2005 ish a scrap car was suddenly worth about £400. The very cheap end of the used market changed at this point and then again in 2009 when scrappage was introduced. Cars in general also started getting more expensive in the last recession and never really went back down. This coincided with many smaller family owned franchised dealers opting to sell up to the big corporates at this point. Most of the big corporates have an auction policy when getting rid of the older px's, or they run there own online auctions like Sytner. The fees that the likes of BCA then charge are insane and inflationary and has led to cheap cars being no longer cheap. The small used car dealer doesn't benefit from any of this and neither does the public.

I couldn’t afford to take it to a garage, so bought the Haynes manual and sorted it myself. I’ve never really got my head around VAT being included again on a used car? If I can explain. When new, the car would have been placed on the road and the VAT paid on the car to the government, from the first selling dealership. Then it’s traded in; the dealer then sells the car on to a new owner, as a used car, but the government has already been given the VAT when new, why do we need to be stung again for VAT on it’s used value ? All the duty for that car is been agreed and paid when it was new? You don’t go an sell a used television and charge VAT on a used item, again that would have been collected from new, by the selling retailer? Made this very point many times over the years since the inter net started. Now retired, used to be in the trade. The used car trading constraints designed to protect car consumers means that many car consumers pay more for their motoring than need be. "Sold as seen" worked well in the distant past for those who know what goes on under the bonnet. Real bargains to be had. There's other negatives as a result of those used car trading constraints. Dealers no longer see such part exchange nicer old cars taken in as "nice little earners" so off to the auctions or more likely straight round to the breakers and weighed in for scrap. Very wasteful and does precious little for the environment despite what some of the green meanies would have you believe. Think scrappage schemes. Even today, some of those P/Xs thrown away I see when visiting my favourite car breakers defies belief. Some with current MoT certificates in the Glove Box! Cars which would be both highly valued and even treasured in many other parts of the world. Wasteful throw away UK still excelling at getting far too many important things ... wrong. We've got Jo Swinson to thank for the current regulations, she was responsible for it when she was in the coalition govt. She can't make the distinction between buying a brand new pair of trainers online and buying a 15 year old used car! The reality is there needs to be separate legislation introduced for car sales, called something like 'The Sale & Supply of Motor Vehicles Act', that makes the distinction between brand new vehicles and much older used cars. But then that's too logical for UK politicians...
@wayland7150
@wayland7150 Год назад
It's not Whitehall being wrong, it's their agenda. Your car provides you freedom, that's far right and bad for the environment. You should be staying in your 15 minute city. In 2030 you'll only be able to buy expensive exploding electric cars new. The fairly decent £2000 cars will all have been scrapped and people will be spending fortunes to get the last of the petrol cars. We will be eating burgers made of meal worms too. If you complain too much they will close your bank account.

Not just because it saves you getting sued in court.. But because it could leave someone in a dangerous situation at the side of the road. Not for a vehicle but I do have a similar tale. As a family lawyer divorce was a big part of my work. My client was being divorced by his soon-to-be ex for reasons not concerning the audience here. Anyway, she wanted to keep the family home which had recently had a full roof of solar panels added. Her claim (through her solicitor) was that the panels were simply part of the value of the building. My claim was that there is also an ongoing income element which needs to be shared because my client would not get the enjoyment or benefit of that income stream. The judge having listened to arguments then stated that she had recently installed solar for the exact reasons I was asserting and deemed them an income stream for the occupant. A nice victory. 🙂

Too many things wrong with it and £150 tax on a car only worth about £2000 (if in good condition, full MOT obviously). The scrap guy assures me that it will be broken down and stripped of anything that could be reused on another car. I check the registration a couple of months later... new MOT and tax.

The Consumer Rights Act states that the goods must be of satisfactory quality in that they are of a standard that a REASONABLE PERSON would consider as satisfactory taking into account the description, the price paid and other relevant circumstances. The unfortunate thing is (no dig at chops here he does seem the exception) dealers have taken the Mickey for years, shifting scrap on to unsuspecting customers for inflated prices. It had to happen. The problem is the difference between a business that is set up as an 'expert' in its field in this case a car dealer, and a consumer whom the law believes has to have no expert knowledge. The law therefore generally supports it is unreasonable for a consumer to have the same knowledge as a dealer. There are many really conscientious and honest small dealers but there are sadly lots of dishonest ones.

Sales of goods includes private sales. Items mean nothing on age or price. Wear could be considered milage. But with cars designed for 3-4 years life. Or 100k miles. our car sales wouldn't consider older cars at all. I used to only sell cars that were in good condition and a MOT is only valid for two weeks from a legal/test point. Yes I know there a year. But that's the liability hence why minor or things that used to never be included are now mentioned.

Imagine how much tax in VAT one car can generate in it's lifetime for the government. It's insane that VAT is charged on a car sale every time it gets sold by a dealer, no matter how old it is or how many times it's been sold before. Add to that all the fuel duty, VAT on parts, car tax, insurance tax and parking charges. The government is just rinsing the motor industry and car owners.

My experience of car dealers is that none seem to have ever heard of a cam belt. Whenever I’ve mentioned cambelt change they look blank and then try and tell me a belt last for 1,000,0000 miles. For sake of argument I find dealers cannot not match trade in money from we buy any car by circa £200min. On the basis we buy any car and BCA all make money and dealers must be buying the cars as BCA is trade only, surely it’s costing more money than taking cars from the public on trade ins?? Or as James says are all car dealers are dodgy 😂 present company accepted. Ps is James the only person who still buys autoglym products. I bet he’s got some back to black and womderwheels somewhere.

as a customer id rather pay the £600 extra knowing the work had been done properly, trouble is how do we know that the whatever dealer we are using has really done the work and not just bumping up the price ? As a trades man I made a conscious decision to ONLY do repairs to other peoples items and warrantee the repairs ONLY for 2 full years, there is simply no way I would give a warrantee on something so old and TBH I can't get my head around the expectation that such an old car should have 6 months warrantee. If I could find a trustworthy dealer near me I would much rather they just walk me through what the risks of each item is and between us agree what should be changed before the sale and what to maybe just put off for later.
