i saw the posters yesterday, but did not know about how they were released. this was a blast to watch, i love the riddles, and the "great hunt" for new clues! thanks for the great summery of this event :)
The Miner's Rest is the Inn in Baerlon where Min worked in the books. She mentions it once or twice in the books. It is not where she was working when we meet her it was a previous job I think.
It is what made her stop wearing dresses! Edit: it was where she swore to stop wearing dresses due to an incident that I don't think is ever really explained.
I actually think both are incorrect. **SPOILERS** You wont find it in the books either. The Inn she works at is when we meet her is called called the deer and lion; lion and stag or something. "The miner's rest" is not a real place but a metaphor for her. Raised by her single father a mine/metal worker and smithy, with whom she was close and similar in temperament; ie not a "proper lady." She and where she went to ride horses and simple metal crafting and the roots to her prolific knife affinity. When he died in a mining accident i.e. the name miners rest. She then grew up with her aunts who tried to make her into a "proper lady" before she ran away sometime between like 9 and 12 when her abilities started and spent several years independently making a life for herself until she drew the attention of the white tower who thought it was a wilder thing. That's a long way of saying the name Minor's Rest is where he hatred of dresses as an idea and literally began. Dresses incumber her combat and riding and ability to go unnoticed; you can't hide knives in skirts she says at some point. So weakness/helplessness and symbols 'being a proper lady." She wears a dress twice; once at the white tower, using her feminine Elmindrida name pretending to be a traveling women visiting the Tower for healing. The second time is against her well in Falme and a much more awful helplessness that kind of brings both her childhood and identity full circle in a way that helps her grow up very fast. She then is able to love the only other man in her life she has, and will ever love grow to love/trust since her father. the above is fun fellow nerds. TL/DR: Min was "dressed" in her identity by her father the minor's rest in death. Beautifully sad bit of text. That is the reason she is an essential piece of the Rand's connection to humanity.
@@zmccon "In Baerlon, after her father died, her aunts had tried to make her into what they called a decent proper woman, though maybe her Aunt Miren had understood that after ten years running about the mines in boys’ clothes, it might be too late to stuff her into dresses. They had tried, even so, and she had fought them as stubbornly as she refused to learn to wield a needle. Aside from that unfortunate episode serving tables at The Miners’ Rest-a rough place, but she had not stayed long; Rana, Jan and Miren had seen to that emphatically when they found out, and no matter that she was twenty then-aside from that one time, she had never worn a dress willingly."
"A Maiden of the Spear from Aiel" sounds funny because it's incorrect: The Aiel are a people, not a place. It should read either "A Maiden of the Spear from _the_ Aiel", or "A Maiden of the Spear from the Aiel Wastes".
The latter I think would be correct and probably the best way to word it, except perhaps to reword even more such as "A Maiden of the Spear, one of the Aiel." However, that sounds clunkier than your wording.
Maybe they are replacing the "Aiel Waste" with just "Aiel" has a location, and a people. I hope not, and I hope they also keep The Threefold Land but the background lore for that might be a hard to cram into a short section.
I'd not seen these posters before. Very intriguing way the PR department made you work to solve each clue. We are at the 2 week mark for the start of S2. Getting anxious
This is such a good video. My Twitter notifications were blowing up yesterday but I didn’t have the time to follow and track everything that was happening. Thank you for putting this all together in a nice package. My FOMO has been eased. 🍻
Wonderful summary, Lauren. I caught some of it on Twitter/X while the posts were popping up online but was working so I wasn't able to join in the Great Hunt actively when it happened. I love the way they are setting up the fanbase for S2. I am really excited for this and can't wait for the music to post! I was screaming internally with each poster reveal...not gonna lie, I wasn't happy that Nynaeve and Liandrin were paired together but I am sure there's a good reason that will reveal itself fully based on the trailers/media we've seen so far!
they are amazing posters and i love the interaction with the fans, i mean old tongue riddles for fans to solve? where else you going to get that kind of thing?? With all the refences in these posts although very little is in the same order i do get the feeling we are going to get more of the books than i expected this season, a feeling i also got form the trailer. And am pleasantly surprised!
Considering many of us are watching this tribute-band version of WoT with the mindset of Mystery Science 3000, with the plethora of "re-imaginings" they've shoe-horned in, who can even tell what they actually meant?
Thanks for the breakdown Lauren! Great as always! I like the idea of a Mat and Min teamup this season. They really don't have any page time together till the very end of the series that i can remember but in the show them serendipitously meeting up in an inn in TV makes a lot of sense. Interesting that Selene will be an innkeeper in Cairhein, i wonder if it's her inn that Rand is burning down in the trailer, or maybe he needs to find a new place to crash after the burning and that's how he runs into her.
I wonder if they will meet on the road, and she will just be posing as an innkeeper from Cairhein. In the books, she doesn't say much but just lets Rand assume a lot and doesn't correct him.
Yeah, could be. She could easily be lying, or, she could just be in disguise at an Inn briefly. Some people (not you) seem to be blowing this out of proportion. Lanfear loves disguises. She was a merchant for a while too.
@@UnravelingthePattern yeah at first I didn't like the idea of her hanging with the commoners so to speak ala her book two arc but she changes that up in book 4 so an innkeeper wouldn't be out of character for her.
Heron marked blade theory: Someone tells Rand in the show that the heron mark is not common, so he takes it off the handle to hide. When he’s going to face the Seanchan he doesn’t have / doesn’t want to hide anymore, so he added it back, to “show off” in a way.
I agree she was shielded , makes more sense . And as ishy said she could feel it there but not touch it . Besides it’s a great way of introducing the concept of tying off weaves earlier than the books and of course untying them
I'm concerned about how Moraine will be healed. Supposedly women CAN NOT SEE men's weaving. So how will the weave be undone? The Amyerlin Seat undid knots as a child without any training, but she SAW the knots. Just hope Rafe has a believable, logical method to free Moraine.
I think in one of the interviews Daniel or either Rafe in the video for comic con said that the testing room would be used this season and next. I doubt Rand will be using it, so maybe their test is next season
Book spoilers!!! I don't know about you, but when I found out that she was black ajah I was utterly shocked. Then she kept talking, and I loved her even more.
I am really hoping they spend time this season developing these characters. My wife, who hasn't read the books but watched the show with me, couldn't remember anything particular about any character other than Nynaeve and the healing scene from the cave in episode 4. And that the red head is the dragon. Great work, Lauren, as always. Keep it up.
Agree, they need to do way more character development. The "who is the Dragon" secret kind of backfired in that way. They didn't want to reveal it too soon so they seemed to intentionally withhold important character info.
@UnravelingthePattern It did bother me a bit that show spent an entire episode flushing out warders, who do play an important role, instead of putting more time into the EF5. I'm not giving up on the show, but it did curb my enthusiasm a bit. I'm sure the original script (before Barney left), non Covid restrictions, and more money/episodes alloted from Amazon would have made season 1 better. Just curious on your thoughts... Why didn't they just remove the dagger shot from the end? Like just have Fain stand up and walk away from Loial. It would have removed some plot holes right?
@@Zulverius it's not a plot hole if they plan on explaining it. We'll have to wait and see how they handle it. Also, they didn't spend a whole episode on Warders. It was a part of an episode with a lot of other stuff going on. I understand the criticism and do feel they should've spent more time with the main characters, but it wasn't even close to a whole episode.
@UnravelingthePattern I'm gearing up for a rewatch next week with my wife before season 2 drops. All I remember from that episode was Lan and Steffan. While there was other things happening, I don't remember it lol.
Did you see in an interview with Marcus Rutherford that he gave away that they are definitely on the search for the horn with the Shiarins? (I know I probably spelled that wrong lol) I figured that's what he would be doing but it's been confirmed!!! lol
@@UnravelingthePattern I saw the promo after your video, I didn't know if you had seen it yet. There are so many spoilers in the new interviews and they're all over the place!! lol
Awesome. It's almost enough to make me want to get back on twitter of time... almost, but not quite. 😅 the rest of the platform was always the issue for me.
I think the Child of the fruit of trees might a reference to the fact that Liandrin's father was a fruit seller. Only thing I can think of, and a few other people pointed it out as well.
7:38 I've seen this image so many times and this might be the first time I've noticed that Nynaeve has a great serpent ring (on the incorrect, by the book, finger).
@@UnravelingthePattern _Whaaaat?_ I've watched all of your videos and this is the first I've heard it --- I must click off right before the end, I'm very spastic that way ;)
I have fallen deeply in love with this show quite possibly like no other I have watched in my life. I'm a very eclectic person myself so it's been unreal. I have been able to research terms, Watched the Origin Stories and have learned as much as possible without ruining anything possibly too big for myself. I also assumed of course that no matter what the books say or do the Show could be completely different. It was fun learning some about the Aiel people, The terms for men & women's weaves, the different properties they can contain. The term for cutting off that power for each and when it was just one word used for both. Commiting to memory the different Ajah colors and what they represent, The 3 promises. I'm very happy with what I have been able to learn without giving myself too much because I want to know it all but I want the Show first, then I will read the books. Listening to the sneak peek of the Chosen/Forsaken etc scene added at the end of season 1 a couple weeks ago after watching it 5 times (I have watched season 1, 12 times now and I just can't get enough. I notice something different and new every time because there's so much detail. It's amazing). I'm probably shooting completely in the dark but the woman with the Aes Sedai ring almost sounded like Suanne to me. Then it clicked how much of a betrayal that would be if it was being the Amyrlin Seat, especially to Moiraine and although I understand why she would have been fully aware of Moiraine's intentions traveling yet had to humiliate her in the White Tower because of the politics, dark friends etc that Moiraine warns Nynaeve about but it would also be a good reason for her use Moiraine in keeping it quiet from everyone period. That would be a huge betrayal. I don't know. I'm also thinking it's not possible because of the promises but Moiraine made it clear to listen carefully because what you hear is not necessarily that blunted or what you may take from it. Frankly it's a feat just to remember the spelling of things, let alone so much else and it blows my mind I only know a fraction of it all still. Wonderful Wonderful show. Let's go Season 2!!!! So much I can't wait to find out. 🤍❤💙💚💛🤎🖤🤍
I am so disappointed that Amazon is going off script of the book series, I have been dreaming of this show since the Great Hunt first came out. My dreams have been shattered. They should of just named it something else... ugg
If you check Amazon Prime right now and look at the S2 channel it will tell you the time in your timezone. I believe it's releasing at midnight PT on Sep 1. That's 1am my time :(
I ask this sincerely. Are there actually any fans of the book still interested in this show? I couldn't get through the first season and have been shocked by what I read of the rest of it. I hope it turns things around, but I don't see it happening.
The fact that someone can watch this show after reading the books baffles me. They are more or less saying they can write a better story than RJ and I'm not here for it.
@@MrKlarc19Without question there were things that needed work, but not the things they have changed. Without question the world makes far less sense now than it did in the books.
@@Jerome616This is what I've been saying all along. Even if it's great, all it would mean is that these writers can tell a good story using the skin of WoT. They put the DR in a sanitarium FFS!
Lauren, I think you have become the most popular WoT RU-vid channel. I wonder if it's because you are evenhanded rather than total fanboying like most other channels.
I don’t think I'm the most popular, but that is my goal. Realistically it's probably because I've been more consistent with uploads and YT loves that. I'm hopeful that S2 will give me a bump.
@@UnravelingthePattern I've been looking at the viewship rates across the loudest channels since the trailer dropped (I know that's sad) to get a view of fan engagement. I don't see anyone near your numbers.
It's true! The algorithm is pushing me hard right now! I've worked very hard to that end. I just hope that my subscriber counts grow as well (which they are, but I want to surpass other creators selfishly).
@@UnravelingthePattern Keep at it. I know you mostly love the show while I mostly hate it but you've not call me a bookcloak or strawman my position and for that I'm grateful 👍
@@robinirie98 thank you. I genuinely love a good discussion, especially about WoT. And, to be honest, I don't love the show, I just like it. And sometimes I go as far as disliking it (not hate, haha). I want to love it. I do love the Wheel of Time and so I give the show the benefit of the doubt. I also have some experience with media and filmmaking and everything, and I tend to lean more pro-show. I don't often use the term bookcloak, even though I've met a few. Most people who react negatively about the show do it because they love the books so much. I just dislike comments that are mean and disrespectful. Everything else is great, even if I disagree. Thanks for always engaging!
Min's hair is not exactly shaved on the sides in season 2 pics, it is just buzzed very close to the skin. When you look at her hair in Season 1 ep 7 at time stamp 51:17 the sides are very much shorter than the rest of her hair there as well. I don't think she will be connected to the Seanchan in this season. I think we are going down a wrong path with this supposition.
Oh no really they have Selene as an innkeeper. I am sorry if they did not want to do the shadow world (people that read the books will know what I am meaning) they should still had like Selene been attacked by be it man or beast. Would still felt like the books even though not been books. Or maybe Selene was at a work sight of a big statue again if you know you know. Something from the books and could play an important part so showing in the show would had been the prefect time. Even having her maybe leading/telling Rand to where he checks in. They could had it like the first members for the other tower and that why the Amyrlin Seat and Logain are where they are. To see these people (I am guessing males and could have some females that gone crazy with power).
I just had a thought, what if the scene in the trailer where Rand is channeling and Selene is behind him is him looking at the statue? It's in Cairhien after all.
@@nadie9058 Really? Any why would that put them into a mental hospital rather than being sent to do penance on a farm somewhere? I know you're trying 🤣 but it doesn't work
I can't say I have faith in that yet, there were at least a couple really serious missteps in season one. Like really serious ones. But I am cautiously optimistic! It does look good.
@@aliomar2912 I keep going back to the first time Min met Rand. Where is that witty girl who loves to tease? She was always a breath of fresh air when she was on the page.
I agree she's different from the books, but don't forget there's such a thing as character growth. I'd be pretty jaded if I had to see people's deaths and violence all of the time too.
@@UnravelingthePattern so true. It feels like they are leaning into the slog early. Hopefully they get it out of the way now and get to the amazing adventures by the end of the season.
Ugh this show is borderline plagiarism. The writing feesl like they just stole someone else’s world map and character names then tried to make their own poorly thought out story.
@@UnravelingthePattern glad you agree obviously its a bit hyperbolic a statement but it’s clear they plan to change a great deal from the source material and not for the better unfortunately. Great video btw I hope more people find you.
