Have you every been disappointed by a watch that you see in person for the first time? Has it been because the watch felt too small on wrist? In this video I talk about some options in the 3-5k price range for those of us who have larger watch preferences. Please sound off with your recommendations, and thanks for watching guys!

As I get older, I have a tendency to purchase big dial watches that are 40mm or bigger, not because I want to be a blinged out rapper or show off my impressive big dial watch.....it is so I can see the dang time without having to put my glasses on.

Its not as much wrist size as person size. If you are tall, chunky or have big hands, a small watch can just disappear. I’m 6.2, 200 pounds - just medium wrist of 7inch, but finding my Rolex Explorer 39 lacks presence. It has the right lug to lug but just isn’t chunky enough. A thicker watch with similar dial size might work better (eg air king or Milgaus). My 41 Tudor GMT is spot on for me. Get annoyed when watch “experts” claim over 39 or 13 thick is uncouth without acknowledging men come in different sizes. Nice vid.

Hey Bruce, great video. Personally, I have 8.5" wrists, and IMHO, I prefer watches less than 42mm and the sweet spot for me is 39-40mm. However, in terms of big watches that wear well, the Speedmaster Coaxial editions are 44.25mm and wear great. Also, the Planet Oceans, Grand Seiko Divers, IWC Big Pilots, Bretling Navitimers, Marinemaster, Rolex SD 43 or James Cameron, and Panerai wear great for large watches. Some of these are over his budget but some of them can be purchased preowned in his budget. Cheers

I have a 8" wrist and anything under 43 looks too small. I'm new to watches but I think its in the shape of the wrist and not just the circumference. My wrists are like rectangles, wider on the top where the watch sites but not very tall on the sides, so its the lug-to-lug width to look at here for fit.

Hey Bruce, thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question! You know what? You really did hit the nail on the head in this one, haha! I'm doing exactly what you suggested here. Im saving up for the Carl F, but I ended up buying the 43mm Longines Heritage Military 1938, just to keep me company while i'm saving up for the real gem. I'm really happy with the Longines, it's a beautiful watch. And i'm looking forward to the day when I enter my AD to buy that Carl F. Thanks again for a great video! Mats

Hey, 9" wrist here. I had a similar Tudor issue. I end up getting the 43mm black bay bronze that you can order the XL leather strap and it all fits beautifully. Sure, the bronze thing and it's patina is not for everybody.

I think it’s a great time to buy an older panerai. Right now they are so under appreciated. Panerai messed up with lack of water resistance in newer watches and brand received backlash.

At 7 3/4" wrists size, I love this . I got my first Vostok Komandirski yesterday and even at 41mm, it looks small onnmy wrists. The NATO strap helps with the rings on each side. I just subscribed after seeing your Vostok vlog. I have collected watches over the last 40 years since I was a kid, and spring cleaning made me realize I had almost a dozen watches that didn't work. Out of work on a injury, I bought a watch repair tool kit and fixed them all. As a car mechanic, it was easy. I had a Tag Huer my late in-laws got me, Fossil my late wife got me, a Timex Expedition and a Helsbro my parents got me when I was 10. I have bought in the last few months a Orient Bambino Gen 4 blue face, Casio Edifice efv-530d, and what started it off was a Diesel Rasp at the Fossil factory store. I bought 2 more Diesel watches, a Mega Chief and Mr Daddy 2.0 which is absurdly big, even for my almost 8" wrists. I just thought it was cool with 4 time zones. I think it looks good wearing long sleeved shirts with sleeves rolled up to my forearm. I also bought 2 Timex watches, a weekender and a Mod44 I put a brown alligator strap on with its white face, looks good. I have another Vostok tank watch from the Ru.store and also ordered from Meramon factory store for Vostok, a 650456 24hr watch and mesh band much cheaper than anywhere I could find. It shipped same day and should be here in a few weeks. My other 2 came from Amazon, which is where I got most of my other watches. Love the content

Great vid. I like your suggestion of maybe having a little budget friendly fun while you save. Like your recco for the big man as well. I'd like a Spitfire Chrono but ..... So, I'm thinking maybe a Longines Bigeye to hold me over. Seeing great deals. Soft brands can provide awesome opportunities. Id definitely go used on a Panerai. And I will someday on a pam 104 for sure.... hehe.. Cheers Bruce!

@aldojacobi6007

Hey Bruce - love your reviews man 🐸! Wow the wrist size vs watch size question. There have been many, many, many watches which have been disappointing and it could be the size, the design, the "feel" whatever it is, if it's not right, then it's not right. Generally the "small" size is the main issue but there are other factors which are important to me. I've been "spoilt" by my PANERAI 47mm pieces so have gotten used to a larger watch in this "sporty diver" genre (lol -it's late here). At the end of the day, you HAVE to try on the watch regardless of the brand as all watches wear differently (even different models within the same brand & which have some similar specs). Certain PAM 47mm watches wear larger (1940s RADIO) feels larger than LUMINOR (1950s) as an example & yet some 47 RADIOMIRS feel larger & some feel smaller.....all due to the case size/face size/bezel width ratio & lug length & shapes etc.... In my experience over the journey which started for me when I was about 5 years old ( that's another story 🐸), there have been many distractions, but the finish line is "never ending" as there's always something new which catches your eye.....so I'd keep saving like CRAZY for your dream diver & maybe for a distraction look at a SEIKO TURTLE as a 45mm really awesome daily watch with HUGE personality and they're only a bucks & buy something different (BLUE face PADI dial) or there's an ORANGE faced one which would be awesome. I bought a sunburst GREY dial version & fitted a lumed sapphire after-market bezel on it & have been enjoying it whilst I $ave & wait to see what the new GRAND SEIKO SPRING DRIVE Diver Ltd Edition : SLGA001 (46.9 - 47mm) diver looks like in person when it's released in Aug/Sep/Oct & hopefully it won't disappoint me (All my fingers & toes are crossed!) At the end of the day - I live by one mantra when it comes to watches, a piece of advice which was given to me many, many years ago from a much more experienced person who I was talking to about the amazing "high-top" plexi crystals found on late 70s/early 80s ROLEX SUBs & that is: "Buy a watch you love the look of regardless of the name on the dial. After all you'll be looking at it over 80 times a day....".

Not sure if the guy had some history, but I would be careful going too big and too expensive. Been there, even 45mm watches seemed small on my 8,25inch wrist, so ended up buying 47mm steinhart. And I'm going down in sizes ever since and I just thank myself that I haven't bought something expensive in this size. Don't get me wrong, still got a 44mm in collection, but that's pure tool. Looking outside of pure tool box currently and thinking if 41mm black bay isn't too big for me and seriously considering BB58. In fact, submariner (40mm) or explorer (39mm) is where my taste is right now, 41 is upper limit. So my advice, be really really sure that the big size is what your really want. There is buch of us who thought that at first too, but evolved over time to more common sizes. ;)

Check out the oris aquis big day date or the aquis small seconds. They are both 45.5 and wear like a true 43-44 because of the lugs. You can find these for insanely cheap on the used market allowing you to still save for something more significant down the road.

The Tudor black bay bronze is 43mm. I have a 8 inch wrist myself and i have bigger watches but i am used to 41 to 42mm watches now. It took a while but it is all ikn your head. Size is one thing but height and lug to lug width is also important. Some sizes wear bigger then actual size measured.

I rock a 50Mm watch. Yeah, it looks a big like the ben-10 omni watch. Do I care? No. It fits my style choice and looks nice. And people will hate me for it, but it's invicta too. Pro diver master of the oceans. Luckily I'm a big guy so the watch looks just a bit big on me. But for sure would look clownishly ridiculous on a guy who's got a smaller wrist. I think you can rock the oversized watch if you got the confidence. I had a co worker who was only around for like 3 months, he was a Rockstar type. Rocked a big watch. It's all about preference imo.

30% off Tudor?! I got 10% off with no sales tax from the AD and was told I did fantastically because Tudor ADs oftentimes wont even give discounts (at least not on their sports models). That's awesome! Wish mine would offer that, I'd be down there picking up a Pelagos right now.

Sorry I can’t relate. I have a 7.25 wrist and love my 44mm watches. They’re ever so slightly large on me but that’s exactly what I like. Large clean dials like the 2019 Breitling Superoceans look amazing even on smallish wrists. The smaller 40mm watches may be slightly more comfy but the wrist presence just isn’t there imo. I like to strike a nice balance between the two. Anything north of 44mm would be obnoxious imo, unless your wrists are 7.5” or wider.
