The buyer is in my opinion taking advantage of your good nature and honesty. Frankly after 7 months it’s even ridiculous he’s actually going to you for help, he took out the extended warranty it’s the warranty people he should’ve been dealing with not you James. Looks like a person that would complain if there was a stone in the tyre and say that’s your fault 🙄

Never do anyone a favour, they will never forgive you. Giving discounts never ends well . I had a transit with service history, the timing chain tensioner was failing and booked it into the dealers . They said it's not covered under warranty because ohe of the services was a 1000 miles late . So they are saying the oil turns to soup just after the service interval and ruins the engine. So warranties aren't worth a carrot .

If I were the customer I would be very grateful if you helped organize the repair. I would not expect you to pay a penny towards the repair. You can get repair work done far cheaper than most people could. Most BMWs require a major aircraft style going over at 80 to 100 k that should be regarded as a service that costs 2 or 3k to complete on a 4 cylinder model.

Sadly the timing chains are consumable parts. I believe they also have a service interval, similar to cam belts, although it is usually a longer intercal than the belts. I had to replace the timing chain on our 2009 Mini Cooper S. Wasn't under any kind of warranty and the garages round me either priced themselves out of the job or declined the opportunity. I spent 30 hours stripping it down and replacing it myself. Had to remove the sump to retrieve bits if the guide though. Runs like a dream now, but I can understand why the garages charge so much and are reluctant to do it.

The clutch on a mk1 focus diesel should have been fairly cheap. I had the slave cylinder go on my mk 1.5 1.8tddi they put a clutch in wile they had the engine and gearbox split. £55 for the clutch kit. I had the car from 2005 till 2016 started with 63k ended with 169k I didn't replace a single item, other than the clutch I didn't actually need. It never even had a cam belt.

@@chrishart8548 can’t remember the exact cost but it was around the £700 mark. I was saving for and iMac at the time and it completely wiped out my savings fund. I had a mk1.5 1.8 TDCi and with the clutch replacement I needed to change the DMF also. Then, about a year after that my injectors were showing signs of failure, so I just had to sell it for spares and repairs in the end as it was going to cost well over £1k to sort out the injectors. That’s the gamble you take though when buying a high mileage vehicle. Which is what some people don’t seem to grasp.

Purchased a 520d 2012 with the n47 few years back. First thing i did was have the chain and guides out as the motor had covered over 80k. Two types of people should buy beemers either the mechanically minded who does not mind and is able to diagnose , service, work on their own car, or the wealthy that can afford to keep them running well as they do get maintenance heavy with age and parts. It's just the way these cars are put together by design that contributes the extra expense in labor costs.

Adding a bit of information around BMW timing chains on the N47 because there's so much misinformation even in this video, such as having to remove the engine which is totally wrong. You don't have to remove the engine on any of the E or F generation cars 1, 2, 3 , 4 or 5 series - doesn't matter if it's a 3.0L or 2.0L no need to remove the engine, just take the gearbox off. There are multiple chain failures points, all caused by irregular oil changes. The guides can break apart but this is rarer than just the chain snapping usually caused by the oil spray becoming blocked. The camshaft chain usually goes first but it's not unusual for the middle chain to go. The lower oil pump chain never snap. From 2007 to March 2009 a design flaw in the crankshaft caused premature wear of the mmiddle chain, this was resolved in a newer revision but the issue remained for the top chain. This resulted in further changes to the top timing chain tensioner, making it a little longer and moving the oil supply hole to retain oil better when the engine is off. Shame I wasn't closer, I'd help ya out

Would a 525d m sport on 195k, with full bmw history likely have problems with the chain, its just had a gearbox, and i've been offered it by a family member cheap. Cars literally sat on the m6 for the passed 4 years
@nemz7505
@nemz7505 11 месяцев назад
@@stevenking2946Unfortunately Steven the primary factor many believe for premature timing chain wear are the extended service intervals. Personally I recommend every 8000 miles rather than the 18000 miles BMW specify although during R&D they say these engines are good for 1 million kilometers which they did achieve in lab testing but it's pretty obvious these extended service intervals haven't helped them achieve this in the real world. There are only tools available to check the top chain stretch without dismantling as the middle chain is behind the rear engine cover and the gearbox would have to come off for this. You could technically remove the valve cover and visually check for movement and wear on the sprocket on the top chain in around 3-4 hours and any BMW indy could do this, gaskets should be fine but they must replace the injector seals, once crushed they don't seal properly again.
@stevenking2946

@nemz7505 many thanks! Currently got a mondeo, that has variable servicing, sometimes the service indicator comes on at 12k miles other times 8k miles. Changed jobs recently and putting it down to sitting in traffic. That's a 2016 and coming up to 160k, bloke on here called Allan Howatt runs a fleet of them as cabs, runs them at 18k service intervals and finding the timing chains between inlet and exhaust cams are snapping at 250k ish miles, he is putting this down to the extended service intervals, as the mk4 used to be 12k miles, they would run to 400k miles without issues.

Avoid BMW's :) If this car was supplied by a typical Midlands dealer, the customer would not get any sympathy at all even after a few weeks from buying. The fact you are still willing to help is amazing. The chains are a known issue on these cars. I would not touch one with a bargepole even with decent history (they fail anyway). It made moresense to buy the older gen (front chain) version and bargain for the cost of replacing the chain as preventative.
@danmoney9932
@danmoney9932 11 месяцев назад
The problem is it's impossible to find one with truly decent service history. No one is going to have gone above and beyond BMWs ridiculous 18-20k miles intervals for the oil change so even "full" service history is not much good. Need to factor that the chains will need doing at 100-120k.

Used car warranties aren't up to much. Generally they say "breakdown" or "failure". This isn't the same as a new car warranty where parts are warranted to be "good". So a noisy part is covered under the new car warranty but the part often has to totally fail on an old car to be covered, which often is a much worse overall failure - and of course a warranty company is an insurance firm, the No 1 priority of which is to their shareholders and therefore to NOT pay out.

I had the timing chain done at a BMW specialist independent garage for £1.5k with genuine parts and 2 year guarantee. Problem is BMWs suggested service interval is 20k miles or 2 years which is ridiculous since having the timing chain done I'm servicing the car every 5k miles it's been running like new since on 110k miles today not going to the main dealer ever again.

@01matthewc German engineering is still better than British engineering! At least Germany still has a flourishing profitable locally owned auto industry. What is the biggest British-owned auto manufacturer?

Bmw have long service intervals upto 19000 for oil changes. I have a BMW and have oil changed every year, otherwise you are looking at trouble ahead. Also BMW recommend Castrol GTX oil only.

Surely if an engine has to be removed from any car, the bulk of the cost for a warranty company is in that. If that is covered, then shouldn’t the customer / dealer then only be liable for the cost of the repair itself. After all - without the engine being removed the fault can’t be diagnosed 🤷🏼‍♂️ Sounds like the warranty company wanting it both ways to me !

⚠️Rover 75 has the BMW M47 engine in straight out the 2000y 3 series. We've seen those chains exceed 500k miles plus. No engine since then has that sort of longevity. Modern BMW engines are pants. Some "friend" you have have there. Good luck with that 😂

Anyone buying one of these warranties wants their head testing especially if the vehicle has done over 100,000 miles,if you want a new car warranty then buy a new car. People want a new vehicle for secondhand money and then gripe about how much it’s going to cost to repair,it’s a wonder you’ve gone this long without a catastrophe,buying from BCA unseen is a recipe for disaster and buying dealers trade ins without trying them is suicide. If there was any money to be made from selling these high mileage vehicles retail then they would be sell them themselves not leave people like you to tart them up and sell on,it was only a matter of time before you got caught out,the motor trade is ruthless so if you can’t stand the heat then leave the kitchen and work for someone else. BMW know about the timing chain issues with their engines but let’s face it that motor has done over a hundred thousand miles so what did he expect.

in my opinion manufactures make cars to last 3years until they are out of warranty,my auto electrician bought a 520d touring his wife was driving it and the chain broke,4,500 to fix, he had paid 12.500 for the car then sold it to a friend for 1,000 just wanted to get rid of it.stupid idea to have chain on the back of the engine,this is a weak single chain, i very rarely see warranty firms paying out

Hard luck, he will just have to get the chains done. There are specialists who can so it for less than 1k. Some cars with cambelts that need doing looking at 600+ anyway so its not that much different.

If your friend bought a car from another dealer… drive that car for 7+ months with no issues, would said friend expect the dealer to pay?… you sold your friend a working car that was in good condition. You buy an old BMW, then you have to expect something is going to need fixed…

On the 1.6 you can do it on a lift without taking the engine out. With the gearbox out it’s not that bad a job. Day to strip day to put back together. £300 ish for the kit including oil and filters. Only worry you have is if the teeth are worn on the crank. Given it’s not yet jumped or snapped you’ll probably get away with it. I did one that had snapped that was probably 18 months ago and 12k miles it’s never skipped a beat again. Not the cheapest job but it’s an old car if you go 50/50 your being generous in my opinion?

As per my comments on another of your videos, the CRA does not require a fault to be present at the point of sale. If the failed part would reasonably be expected to last much longer then this falls within CRA legislation (satisfactory quality includes durability), especially after just a few months post sale. In this instance though, the timing chain on a 108K miles 2015 car would likely not be covered under the CRA "durability" as it is often considered a wear and tear item (that is unless it was already replaced fairly recently). Unfortunately business and friends often don't mix well 😉

I think you are being taken advantage of. 7 months! A friendship goes both ways. Offer to buy the car back with a reduction for time he had it, then sell the car on for spare or repair. I certainly would not give him a " curtesy " car to rag about in whilst it is being repaired. Don't sell him another car.
