Back in the 1990's on lake Wawasee a guy caught a 6' long sturgeon and it took him 3.5 hours to land it, he thought he would get to keep it, but the DNR came and took measurements, its weight and told him that he had to release it, since it was a protected species! This would be a lake to visit, I lived on it for years, it is a Glacial lake that turned into several lakes, that were dammed in the 1800's to restore Indiana's largest natural lake! The lake is about 1 mile by 3.5 miles in size and can get some 5' white caps on certain days, it is also home to tales of Capone and his Spink Arms hotel that was a casino during prohibition, it was also the place that Eli Lilly called home! I have caught perch in lake wawasee that measure nearly 15" easily and caught pike in 45' deep water both in johnsons bay, it is a crazy place and has quite a few large gars 40"+, some of them sun bathe on Syracuse just east of the train bridge channel passage entrance which connects to Wawasee via a long channel! The sturgeons were never stocked in the lake, most of what was stocked were pan fish, bass, walleye and others in the 1940's, but species like the long nose gar, pike, muskies and some of the cats were already there before it was dammed, just south of that location off state rd 13 is another lake I lived on, called Webster, it has state records for Muskies. It also has a monster that nobody has caught, that is a bottom feeder and might be another sturgeon, it has invoked tales of a mermaid in the lake for over 100 years, you will see plenty of mermaids around North Webster in relation to that folk lore, but just like on Wawasee my fish finder had to combine several sizes of fish to show the outline of the giant, I have witnessed this on both lakes and whatever it was had to be over 6' long! Normally Muskies would show up as the largest the finder had to offer, but in both cases at the deepest points in both lakes my finder had an issue showing the size and combined several fish into one giant fish. It could tell the difference between a school and a single fish. Webster also has a White Crappie population that averages 10-12" long and in my old channel on the south end of the lake 3 people could pull in their daily limits in less than an hour! Wawasee was formed during the same time the great lakes were formed, via glacier and is an anglers dream "I did not mention the bass, but they get huge as well" there are also large white bass in both lakes, but they are a little more rare!
