I've owned boats for 20 years and still struggle with this to be honest. Thanks for the tip.

Lol. I understand. There are times when I think to myself, "How did that happen?" And of course someone was waiting for me.

As a 15 year old learning how to drive, this was very helpful. As a kid I always took for granted how easy it was for my dad to back up the boat and in hindsight I wish I wouldn’t have been so impatient. On another side note, I caught my pb largemouth out of a Wisconsin lake last weekend with a 6 pound 1 ounce tank on a mini dawg swim bait. We were fishing for pike and I was shocked when it came up out of the water.

Congrats on the new pb! That is always a big moment. I'm glad the video helped. Good luck!

Good advice , when I was 16 dad bought a 16 ft. Ski boat .he would let me pull the boat to the lake ,launch the boat and recover it when we were headed home . That led to a life of truck driving .

It is such great memories to look back at learning and how we learned. When I was a kid I wanted to drive a truck too!

Great video, love watching your videos. I am new at this and still learning. I have a 1/2 ton truck and 10 1/2 ft. Jet ski trailer for my kayak. My question for you is, how do you back up a small trailer where you can't even see the trailer behind your truck?
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors 3 месяца назад
That is a terrific question. Short tongued trailers behind a long wheel base are very hard to back up. Especially, like you said, when they are hidden. What I have seen people do in that situation is they have small brackets they put on each fender and then when they go to back in, the put a bike flag in each one. Seems to work pretty well because they can see the flags.

You missed the biggest aggravation at the boat ramp. But before I tell you what that is (IMHO), I gotta tell you, I never show impatience for someone backing down the ramp. Let's face it, some folks just aren't good at it. Heck, I can't remember the last time I drove the pontoon boat on/off the trailer, because my wife REFUSES to back the trailer 🤣🤣🤣. BUT THE BIGGEST AGGRAVATION is the owner that doesn't properly and completely prep the boat for launch. When you're backing the boat in, all that should be left is the winch hook (and I usually have that unhooked too). These people that get down to the water's edge and get out to load in supplies, load passengers, unstrap trailer tie-downs, put up the bimini...C'MON, MAN, do that stuff before you launch. And reverse for the end of the day. Backing a trailer is just hard for some people. I just smile and wait. They'll figure it out. But improper technique isn't half as bad as poor etiquette. Like when you're a single coming in and you tie up right in the middle of the courtesy dock while you run and get your trailer. C'MON, MAN, tie that ^%$#^^ up out at the end of the dock so people don't have to maneuver around you. 🙄🙄🙄

Very true. That is definitely aggravating. I forgot to mention that in this video and should have. Thank you for adding it! Have a wonderful day!

this helps but my boat barely has any weigh plus i'm using a stick shift with no brakes
@Tiresmoke7

I find it a little easier if I put the truck in neutral and let the weight of the boat and trailer roll me backwards into the water.

Honestly when I went to a boat ramp took me no time to back a loaded jet ski trailer into the water but when it came to loading it back up I couldn’t see the trailer or what I was doing the mirrors and looking back. I’ve been trying find tip for that situation but it don’t exist
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors Год назад
A jet ski trailer is super tough when it is empty for sure. I have seen a few people use something like a bike flag they mount to the trailer when it is empty so they can see it.

Same thing happened to me. I've gotten so used to backing up a utility trailer by only looking at the back window. But when it was time to back up my friend's empty boat trailer I couldn't see anything out the back. All skills and knowledge went out the window😂. Now I'm relearning it all by strictly watching the side mirrors only. I think my mistake was I was constantly switching my view to the back window then to the side mirrors then to the backup cam THEN to the REAR view mirror getting me all mixed up. Go to an empty parking lot and only use your side mirrors. Refrain from looking at the back window.

It definitely takes some practice for sure. I got a new tow vehicle that has a lot longer wheel base and that adds a whole new challenge.
