The eyes. Where your dog looks during training tells a lot about the state of your dog's mind. Are they looking at you or their target? Can they effortlessly switch between the two? Do they target lock without glancing away. We discuss this and more!

I'm hoping a moderator will pick this message up. There's a young malinois female 1.5 years at the Houston SPCA. Her name is Lady. She looks really sweet and perhaps you know of someone who would give her a good home and adopt her ($55 fee). I would, but I'm disabled now and cant work a dog like a Mal, but perhaps you know someone who can. I'm sure Lady is in the shelter because someone could not meet her needs. Thank you for reading.

it is so sad that people will spend thousands on getting a purebred mal but then the shelters are full of them which you can get for free almost. Mals do not do well in shelters.

No dog does well in a shelter!!! Most of the working dogs in shelters haven't been bred by a real breeder, who takes into consideration all genetic traits and whatever is helpful to achieve a high quality breed in the future. Having dogs of the same or different breeds mate and selling the puppies 63 days + 4 - 5 weeks later to random people, that's not what a breeder does. That's what simple puppy production looks like. Dogs from such puppy mills have a really bad start already when mating is done. When I was breeding American Bulldogs here in Germany, I studied the pedigrees of all the AB's, who were at shows, and compared them also. You can't just get a champion stud and a champion female and have them mate. Puppy mills don't check pedigrees and not even health issues. This results mostly in quite unhealthy litters with genetic diseases. On top of health and pedigree knowledge, a breeder will also be well informed about genetics and the breed history. And when searching for the right stud for a certain female dog, a breeder will also take into consideration the personality traits of the dogs. For example, you wouldn't want to pair up two dogs, who both have a strong prey drive, or both with a weak drive, even if both dogs performed extremely good in shows or in dog sports. You would rather want to match a dog with extremely strong drive with a dog that is calm, because you will want to have a litter that is able to perform well in dog sport, but also be able to calm down as well. You wouldn't want to risk having a litter of overly nervous pups. Also puppies learn a lot from their moms. Therefore you would want to test your female dogs thoroughly, whether they may be good moms or not. If a mother dog turns out to be not a good mom, you wouldn't want to breed with her again, and you would have older female dogs, who had been good mothers in the past, take care of the current litter of the "bad" mom also, so the puppies would learn from these as well. A breeder also doesn't start breeding with a female dog before she is truly mature and has ended her puberty before mating. You would also not want to have a first time stud mating a female dog, who also has no experience with this. A breeder also prepares female dogs for their mating by having a vet do lab tests, give her certain supplements long before mating, etc. And during pregnancy, a breeder also has a vet check on the mother dog and her unborn puppies regularly, to be able to exclude as many problems as possible. If a female dog is quite small for the breed, you wouldn't want to choose an extremely huge stud, because this could cause problems during birth, if the puppies are too big to pass the birth canal. So while a breeder really considers many different things and compares all the possible options, the puppy mills don't care about any of these details. They just want many puppies with no or rather low costs, which also means that mother dogs won't get the vet care if needed before, during the birth or after birth. Also they usually don't keep the puppies safe and healthy and their birth room clean. They also don't care what the puppies learn while they are with them. And they want to sell the puppies as early as possible, which mostly is with about 4 to 5 weeks only, right after mom dog stops nursing the litter. So such puppies from puppy mills have a really bad start, which continues to be a whole bunch of bad experiences in life and the owners then of course have great problems to work them through. Health issues from unhygienic environment and weak immune system are just the beginning. Psychological problems need to be tackled as well. And of course personality problems due to not checking pedigree, genetics, the parents' personality traits, etc. If one chooses to have a true companion for up to about 15 years, this person had better not save money by not buying the puppy from a breeder. Puppies from puppy mills usually cost so much more than a breeder's puppy after the puppies have moved to their forever homes. Coping with a great number of difficulties, is hard work, and at some point some of the owners can't go on with this anymore, especially if their are children involved, or if it's the very first dog the owners have. In addition, I would like to say, that breeders usually take their own bred puppies back, if the owners want to give them up. This is usual in Europe, but I know breeders in Australia and the USA, who also include this in the contract when selling their puppies. @@monikakress3867

I follow a horse trainer named Warwick Schiller. He started out as a typical trainer, expecting obedience and compliance but has gone far beyond this into relationship goals first and then teaching the horse while still learning from the horse. You saying you are not "above" your dogs but partners is what Schiller is now aiming for all the time. It's neat to watch his horses come up to him when he's just hanging out with them. They're completely calm and relaxed, happy to work with him or just hang out while he talks to the camera. He's their boss but also their friend and companion, and he defers to them as much as they do to him. It's a partnership, not an owner/slave, alpha/beta relationship. I've used some of his techniques with horses to amazing effect. I've recently had a horse look at me in outright amazement when she expressed unwillingness to interact with me and I honored her desire immediately as another horse would have done. Her expression was both extremely funny to me and sad. The next time I saw her she and her companion came right up to me and took turns putting their heads against my chest in the gentlest way, taking deep breaths of me, and then happily following me to their stalls without halters or lead ropes. Just being respectful can have huge rewards. I'm not really a dog person (I admire and respect them as a species but don't understand them well at all) but I so appreciate your take on working with them! Again, the results speak for themselves: happy beings who know they are appreciated, respected and trained in a fun and exciting way to their highest levels of achievement without punishment or harshness.

Same. I was considering Ot Vitosha and honestly would rather save that money for my actual long-term goals which this type of training is geared more toward my relationships with my dogs and the relationships I’d like future owners to have with any dogs I place. I’ve seen a former Ot Vitosha get removed from his handler and shipped back to the breeder for not having the die hard drive they wanted. That’s just outrageous to me to have a dog for nearly a year and discard them. I can’t help but to question the ethics of that ‘trainer’ who’d get rid of their own dog. 😞

Your videos give me hope that I can (with the help of a reliable trainer) give her a good life. While shes not a working dog you give a lot of good tips to keep her healthy and inspiration for some activities we can do together. I especially appreciate your advice to watch out for injury as she will not stop playing or walking for anything. She was hit by a car 4 months before I adopted her and you would never know. Even the vet has been shocked at her recovery. All those videos out there encouraging the dominance training are not helpful at all! They are so confusing and she wasn't responding. I have had to increase my exercise quite a bit to match her but thats not a bad thing 😅 thank you so much for your content.

My husband I recently acquired a mixed Akita/Belgian Malinois/Red Healer puppy we’re calling Heinz and boy do we have our hands full. He’s very hyper, extremely strong willed, super smart (already knows sit and shake), and he chews and plays with everything. He is amazing at finding bones our older 2 dogs (8 and 10 years old) have left in the yard and there were at least a dozen in my bedroom 😂 by the third day he was here. He’s almost 3 months old and training him is a challenge for us in multiple ways. We know the basics of dog training but we aren’t able to work with him as much as he needs due to our health. We’re both on disability and my husband is going through cancer treatments so some days neither of us get far from the bed. On those days Heinz tries lying on my pillow above my head or next to my face. I only mind because I’m allergic to dogs. My meds keep it under control until a dog gets in my face or breaks skin. He also goes wild (as I call it) trying to play with me like he would other playful dogs. He minds my husband most of the time but my voice doesn’t get a “mind me” tone so slowing him down or getting him to do something is nearly impossible for me. We love 💗 him so much already. How do you recommend we handle him?
@deemdepot
@deemdepot 5 месяцев назад
Is there anyone (like a young person) nearby who could help out? You might be able to find someone who would walk him/play as an after school job for an hour, for a few dollars. You'd have to test out anyone so they would be doing the right things with him, but him getting a nice hour of attention & exercise would help him. (And make sure the length of a walk is appropriate for his age- walking a young dog too far isn't good.)
@Ribcrickett
@Ribcrickett 5 месяцев назад
@@deemdepot thank you for the suggestions. Sadly, there’s only 5 houses on my street and most of the people are elderly. We play with him as much as we can and we have 2 older big dogs that keep him busy on occasion. Our 10 year old male is starting to tolerate him. Caspar doesn’t take well to other beings. He never has. But our 8 year old female has adopted him as her pup 🐶. Caspar guards the house and yard from outsiders. We will be teaching Heinz to guard as well so he’s ready to take over when Caspar dies. Nikita is very in tune to our health and emotions. She will wake us if our breathing changes when we’re sleeping and she is right here with us when we’re feeling bad. She also never passes on a car ride. Heinz had his first vet visit and shots yesterday. Nikita had to go with him.

I recently found your videos, and I love them! While I don't want to start a whole "political" debate on which dog gear is good and not, I have to say that I appreciate you (seemingly) just using regular collars. Just goes to show that high level dog training is not about the gear as much as the techniques, and it's up to people what they want to use. I don't have the same ambition for high level dog training as my dog is "just" a companion, but being a working dog breed I can definitely use some of these tips! Especially the one about being locked on a target but still responding to commands. I really like how you don't put it into a specific method that you have to follow to achieve results, but more outline the topic so that it can be applied to various methods by people themselves! Makes for a truly versatile training. Thanks for putting these videos out there, they're great.

Hello matt! İ am fan of your videos and your dogs. İ am just wondering what certifications do you have to be qualified to be a trainer like you?

Im interested in learning working dog skills. I would love to get a Malnois but want to be a great handler like yourself. Any recommendations on learning other than RU-vid?

Dude this is amazing! Where is your training facility located? I’m getting a Malinois in a few months and I DREAM of having him this well trained!

I have question about Panosteitis "growing pains''! As a dog owner, I am concerned about my pet's health and well-being and would like to learn more about this condition. Specifically, I am curious to know if any of your dogs have suffered from Panosteitis, and if so, how you have managed this condition. If you have any information or advice that you could offer on this topic, I would be most grateful. I am eager to learn as much as I can about Panosteitis and how to support my dog's health.
