A compilation of the greatest NFL big hits of the 1980's ('80-'89), using actual broadcast footage. I watched nearly every teams' NFL Films yearbook and attempted to locate as many big hits shown in them as I could on RU-vid, Youku, dailymotion and with some very kind collectors. Obviously I couldn't find every single one, but I'm happy to say over the course of 3 months I found a whole hours worth of bone crunching hits for your viewing pleasure! A few hits in this video may not be considered to be very hard, but were put in due to the fact that they are used in almost every NFL Films big hit montage.
A special thanks to RU-vidrs, Beau Bear, Bujer's Sports Classics, Beaubby Vagnert, Maurence Shipley, Classic NFL and Richard Waldrup for their NFL Collections. And to Tim McMillen for his Steelers collection.
I'm still looking for many hits/games from the 1980's. If you happen to have any of these games, please don't hesitate to message me or leave a comment:
1981 Cardinals @ Giants
1983 Falcons @ Bears
1988 Browns @ Bengals
1986 49ers @ Saints

It's amazing more wide receivers weren't paralyzed back then. Probably an element of luck along with the great athleticism of the players to be able to fall as right as they could. Of course for young viewers keep in mind that not all hits were like this, but most of them were aspired to. A defensive player particularly those that covered receivers or rushed qbs motivation was to get the player to worry more about them than throwing or catching the football. Not every player was a tough guy even in the old days and if you could get in a really nasty hit you might benefit later on in the season when that guy was still remembering the bonecrushing he had suffered weeks earlier. We really had no idea about CTE then, some fans just were concerned about spinal injuries, but shaking off a concussion was considered toughness and expected when possible. We knew about the effects of taking hits in boxing, but for some reason didn't think that it translated into football, maybe because of the helmet.

keep in mind in the 80's the defense could still hit the QB after he threw the ball. They was given 2 steps hit the QB. Kinda like Basketball 2 steps when in motion before a travel (Modern basketball take more than two). They knew the defense couldn't just stop on a dime once the QB threw the ball, so allowed 2 steps

@emperorchad4492

Imagine saying the same thing about boxing or the UFC. Some sports are violent. Everyone who's played knew this when they volunteered to play. There was nothing wrong with football. Now there is.
@zroy9263
@zroy9263 8 месяцев назад
@emperorchad4492 I'm also a huge boxing fan, student, and historian as well. Football is still my first true love, however. I'm NOT a fan of UFC in any shape, way, or form! I think that it's barbaric, lacking in skill and talent, disgusting, classless, and gay! That Greco-Roman wrestling shit isn't for me! It's too close for comfort. I can still recall when I was a teenager wishing that my COWBOYS DOOMS DAY DEFENSE would break Terry Bradshaw's leg during the second Super Bowl that we played against them back in 1979. So believe me, I love the brutality of the NFL of the past! But, I would still rather not see any players seriously injured! That's not what the sport is about! I love watching and reading about brutal boxing matches as well. Boxing is a brutal and vicious sport that can kill and cripple a fighter! What happened to my childhood hero Muhammad Ali is sad. He was a true champion and gladiator and paid the price! When Mancini killed Kim back in 1983, I thought that it was sad. He fought like a gladiator and it cost him his life! His mom committed suicide shortly after. So I understand that this happens in these sports but I'd rather see athletes leave their respective professions healthy. And I'd rather NOT compromise the integrity of any sports! I believe that if you sign up for it, then you accept the consequences! .
@emperorchad4492
@emperorchad4492 8 месяцев назад
@@zroy9263 I totally agree. I NEVER want to see career ending injuries not to mention deaths. But I don't believe you have to change the whole game. Which is a moot point imo. I think the NFL changed the game to boost offensive numbers for views and ratings rather than player safety. That being said all these people chose their sports knowing the safety risks. I believe it is probably what attracted many to the game in the first place. I think deep down we men are hardwired for organized violence. And football satisfies that evolutionary instinct. And this is coming from a guy who chose to box and play football after my dad told me I could end up with crippled knees from football and a slow brain from boxing. Funny enough the only sport that's given me long-term problems was baseball. The game he wanted me to play solely. And I'm over here with a shot arm with no cartilage in my elbow since highschool. Lol Anyway. I just think it's sad what they've done to the sport. Ps. I thought the UFC was skill-less at one point too. Then I took up MMA for a few years. That Jiu-Jitsu takes a lot of skill. I've learned to respect the sport exponentially. I still don't watch it much though. Boxing is definitely by far more attractive.

i tuned in plannin on only watching 5-10 minutes, an all the sudden the clips are over! i love me some ole school football! honestly its not the same anymore, n i really dont watch, something that i never ever though i would ever say or not do up until bout 4 years ago. i traded my passion in for the ufc i guess, which may prove that i indeed do miss the real violence n rage that football was to me growing up! atleast i was able to grow up n play the sport it was meant to be played, playing my last game in 06, which sadly, i had no idea was my last, as i missed the last two games of the season due to a wicked bad concussion, that sent me to the er the next, due to a black out, n having spinal fluid coming out my noise. happened at a u of wyoming game, as we played the towns team on friday, stayed the night n went to the college game the next day, n as tcu was running out, watching from the endzone fence, i passed out, fell back, woke up to cop, n went to the hopital in the staduim. the then loaded me on our school bus, rushed me to the memorial hospital in laramie wyoming, n i got the whole gammit, an stayed there over night, getting a 5 hour ride home the next day via some kind parents whom had offered to stay with me n make sure i was alright.

That's why (and the only reason why) Lynn Swann made the HOF. His quarterback Always overthrown him or threw high. Most of his catches was just like that. He won Super Bowl MVP one year with only 4 catches!! It's bc all 4 catches was just like this one or better

At the 4 minute mark you’ll see DeBerg Qb for the Niners…he has a bulge in the back of his shoulder pads. That is the very first device used in the NFL for the QB and coach to communicate through the helmet and headset. Leave it up to silicon valley to give the Niners an edge. It would soon be commonplace throughout the league

the hit on 49ers Neihmiah (sp?) in 83 changed the game... It caused offenses around the league to teach their WR's to turn upfield after the catch when you see a zone to avoid that kind of hit... Passing changed after that to bias towards west coast/ sideline to sideline passing game

@@THEREALGATESin today's flag football league? In a heartbeat!!! You stand a bigger chance getting hurt by a hard throw than a tackle; that's why qbs play for a million years, they're throwing those passes and not allowed to even be looked at for too long without an automatic 15 yard penalty

@drizzle452

If you want to know why records are being broken and teams are scoring 75+ points in championship games-watch this. Wrs and QBs would get disemboweled for running around the middle of the field or tip-toeing down the sidelines. If a wr had to jump for a ball, his life was at risk.

Where there was a reason why a running back was essential back then. Having a Running back like Walter Payton, Bo Jackson, Marcus Allen, Eric Dickerson, and many other stud running backs in the old days was NESSESSARY. Throwing the football back in the days was nearly impossible because of how physical defenses where allowed to play in those days, so what they would do is run A LOT of play action because when you have a good run game, defenses where easier to open up in the pass game. Today's NFL is straight up garbage, QB's are treated like royalties. You might as well all the QB's in the NFL bitches because they aren't allowed to be hit without getting a flag. Not only that throwing for 5000 yards during the old days of football was a huge accomplishment and meant more because of how hard and physical defense where allowed to play. In today's NFL if you don't throw for 5,000 yards you are considered a wash up. This is why I stopped caring about the NFL since 2015. I grew up watching the 70's and 80's football where it was hard nose defenses, now you might as well just play 11 man flag football. Hence why the NFL is now called national Flagfootball League.
@kch7051

Only, NOBODY. Threw for 5,000 yards back then….4,000 was the benchmark and Fouts got that regularly, not many others though early in the 80’s. They werent going spread back then and they never threw enough on the average to approach 5,000. Marino came along and maybe he got close, but nobody else in the 80’s i dont think
