On today’s episode of DIYWILLY, I’ll do a compression test on Biggs the Briggs and Stratton 5hp snow blower engine. From what I've read the 5hp Briggs should have around 60-90psi compression and even up to 110psi on a fresh engine. Spoiler alert Biggs has nowhere near that but still runs very well. Is the gauge accurate? I can only hope and the readings are close to actual compression of my little Briggs 5hp. As I’ve mention before I have many new parts for Biggs and will be starting a rebuild soon on the engine… Stay tuned for more on Biggs the Briggs and Stratton 5hp Snow Blower engine.
So follow along as we continue to improve and build MAX my custom stretch Mega Moto Minibike.

Willy ain't lying! Trying to record and explain technical aspects is a struggle.....specially if you want people to understand it. I know if I was live you guys would see me lose my s**t on a regular. 😆.

Technical stuff is difficult but I have to try. Sometimes I don’t show it because I can do it so much fast not trying to explain it. There was a comment saying I did it wrong and after I read the comment he was right. I knew to open the throttle but overlooked that part. I’ll do it again off camera and see how the results will differ. Me too man I can get so frustrated at times with the work. When I first start the channel I wanted to make raw videos with no editing but that didn’t work out. 🤪 Everyone would have seen me pulling out my remaining hair…😂

Thats about right on compression remember it has a compression release in all likely hood. 50 would be outstanding with compression release,take out your cam and look for one

I have the engine apart right now. I’m sure there is a compression release.

Willy I noticed your flywheel is aluminum for a 3 horse are you sure it does not have magnets in the wrong place or 2 sets. I think your flywheel is keeping you from getting the rpms your looking for,try the cast iron 3.5 horse or the ARC billet flywheel.
@DIYWilly
@DIYWilly 4 месяца назад
The flywheel is the correct one for the engine. The engine is small for its size. It’s a bit confusing but I have purchased other 5hp billet parts but unfortunately they don’t fit. Everything about this engine is small.

hi willy you need to open the throttle and pull
@DIYWilly

Hello Dean64, Your right I didn’t think about that. Thank you for the tip and for watching!!

Remember, it could just be bad valve seat or a leak and a head gasket. Check the small stuff first.

Yes that’s the plan. I also have new rings and valves. So a near complete rebuild is coming soon.. Thanks for watching!!

We used to check compression on our cars back in the day, but our tester had a hex fitting that screwed into the spark plug hole and we could tighten it with a wrench to make sure no compression leaked out around the threads, noticed you were just hand tightening yours Willy? On some of our moto bikes we increased compression by removing the head and milled it down a little using a small flat glass plate window with grinding compound on it and took awhile with pressing down using circular motion, but did the trick, laborous though it was,lol. 🇺🇸👍

How you doing Lou-eye, Hope had a good holiday. Yes I did just hand tighten it. I suspected the compression was low. There a reason the original owner took it off the snow blower. However I think it still runs pretty good. I plan on sanding down both the block and head for flatness. Not trying to gain too much compression that way. Hoping new valves and a quick valve and new rings actually do the trick to gain the higher compression. I also thought about cutting the eye brows which will lower compression some. If I get the 60 or 90psi I’ll be happy. Thanks for always watching!!!

What did u think is the best motor for us I mean this ducar waaaaaay surpassed my expectations compared to my first 2stroke motor I put on my brother who passed away mountain bike Alpinestars had it going bout 40 for 3months 160 dollar motor kit lol then came the 212 ❤ 60 and 80psi will that be my compression I'm thinking 120 or so
@DIYWilly
@DIYWilly Год назад
There’s a huge support for all these clone engines. I’m sure your Ducar is still up to the task. The Tillies as you mentioned are great out of the box. From what I have read the clone compression is like 80-100psi. I would like to get my new 212 out and measure that.

I have 2ea 212’s, 1ea 79cc, 1ea 224, 1ea 420 and the Briggs. Oh and the LIFAN 80cc. I was going to use the 420 in my golf cart. I would like to build a V twin also. I guess I have too many project engines.. 😬

Wanting to do a Briggs build on a vintage MiniBike. I want to do a slide carburetor swap. I think my Briggs are 5 horse not to sure since i don’t work on B&S engines. Question is… where do I start?
@DIYWilly
@DIYWilly Год назад
Hello Elijah, The Briggs are fun and I’m surprised the power they have. Mine is a tired snow blower engine but still runs good. You could start by getting one of them to run. I know you got frames so that’s not a problem.

Doing that kind of compression testing does nothing

Hello jldwolfe, Can you explain what I did wrong and recommend the correct method to compression test a Briggs Flat head? I want to make sure I get accurate measurements before I take it apart. Thanks for watching!!
@jldwolfe
@jldwolfe Год назад
@@DIYWilly Take the blower housing off. Doing the flywheel by hand. If it bounces off compression it’s fine. Because of the cam grind, you can’t get reliable accuracy with a tester. Some claim spinning the engine backwards helps but I’ve not had a lot of luck doing that either
