It almost seems like you want to be so far back in the seat that you want to be riding a cruiser style bike. It'd be nice if you ever did a comparison between what diff bike styles do to stress different muscles especially in the legs. I notice the difference because I have all styles of bikes.

Interesting. I expected that you as a fitter would be better able to feel bike fit than most people. I am terrible at it. Once my GF borrowed my bike, reset it to fit her, and somehow "we" forgot to change it back. I didn't notice that the saddle was 1" too low and 1" too far back and started riding longer distances. Apart from slight stiffness as I dismounted at the end of a several hour ride, I didn't notice anything. A day or two later I would have terrible inner leg pain, which was initially difficult to associate with riding, due to the delay. I ended up with a strained psoas, months of rehab, and a fitting. But I'm still lousy at feeling the fit. The fitter says I'm flexible (which I didn't know) and that flexible people are less aware of fit because their body adapts to the fit more readily and compensates for any errors. All the more reason for all the electronics. And my poor fitter doesn't get much gratification because I can't truthfully say "wow that feels so much better!".

Paul Flory I notice I'm worse at it when I've ridden less -- like over the winter for instance. Normally I'm reasonably good at it, but right now I think I'm just out of practice.

Good Video. I think that fitting yourself by feel is possible, but: it takes a long time and may be very frustrating...

I rode with allen keys a lot doing big mileages: the things you don't notice start to bug you after 50+miles. A new seatpost and stem later and I have it dialled in as far as it can be done by feel and it is comfortable. Any further improvement would require consulting a bike fitter.

Always great videos and information! I am currently dealing with an imbalance right now, but will not change any fitment on the bike... this one is all me! I pulled a muscle in my lower right side of my back and now I have some not so nice right sit bone pressure. This has definitely affected how I now sit on the saddle! Would have love to know what your saddle height started at and what you ended on.

Angus Troutman It's always interesting to see when one imbalance works its way through the body...

Is it safe (in case of an accident) to keep those relatively "sharp" tools so close to the body tissue? 3:33

Hello! I recently bought a medium sized frame bike. It says it fits 5' 7"- 5'11" people. Im about 5'4," and I have my saddle slid all the way forward (which means nose towards the bars, and its just a couple mm past the line, which isnt marked MAX just 2 and -2). If I dont do this, I sit more on the nose, which I hate of course. If this method doesnt work, I could go from a 90 mm stem to an 80. All that to ask, at what point is the frame not the right size? I mean if you have to shove your seat all the way forward, and get a super short stem, is that a sign the bike is too big? Also, when I stand over the top tube, my crotch just barely touches the bar. Thanks!

The scenario you mention -- saddle slid forward and a very short stem -- is kind of textbook for the bike being too big. But if you have to go to the 80 mm stem, and it's more comfortable, then I'd still do it. Then when you're ready for a new bike, you'll have to pay particular attention to getting a shorter effective top tube (but keep track of the head tube length - you don't want a bar position that's too low) and a lower standover...

Bike Fit Adviser Thanks for the quick reply! Right now Im not planning on buying a new bike soon because Im 14 and just spent $340 on this one. So what you're saying is eventually when I do get a new one, make sure the bar position is about the same, and make sure I can stand over it without my crotch touching? One other question I have is, since I slid the saddle forward and may get a shorter stem, does that mean I may be able to take out a spacer from under my bars and get lower instead of being stretched out? Thanks again.

Well, your bike fit is going to be a moving target for the next few years since you're still growing at 14. It's possible (actually likely) that as you grow a bit more this bike will fit much better. To answer your second question, you can try to remove a spacer and test it for a while to make sure this is comfortable, but in general it's bet for simplicity's sake, to consider bar height and reach separately, even though they do have an effect on one another. What I mean is when possible, just change one (either height or reach) and see how you do. Best of luck Luke!
