In May of 2023 I started on this epic journey that I had been planning for two years. I took a gamble and planned for July of 2022, but Japan was still closed due to Covid. I moved everything to 2023 and had another year for planning. One of the best experiences in my life so far.
Total of 726,4 Km and 9488 m of elevation.
I was on the road for 7 Days with 2 rest days.
Gear List
Bike: Canyon Grizl Al 6
Tyres: Pirelli gravel H 45mm
Rear rack: Topeak uni super tourist disc, fits well on the Bike, but I had to wrap tape on the tubes because they were too thin for my panniers. But not a real issue.
Panniers: Rockbros, I bought the triangle ones because they were cheaper, they pack fine, but wouldn't buy them again because you can't put them anywhere upright.
Fork Racks: Decathlon Riverside Aluminum fork Cages
Fork Bags: Ortlieb Dry Bags 7 Liter
Frame Bag: Also Rockbros, great bag, nothing to complain about
Top Tube Bag: nothing special, bit waterproof can't remember where I bought it and there is no brand name on it
Handlebar Bag: Brooks Scape Compact bag. I love the bag and use it even when not cycling, bit it barely fits and using the left shifter does not work great
Bottle Bags: just two cheap bottle holder bags from Amazon for snacks and additional drinks
Tent: Naturehike 1 up 1 person tent, there are two versions, polyester and nylon. I have the nylon version and I love it. Just large enough, light and waterproof
Tarp: Klymit Roamer Tarp, not too heavy and good rain performance. Does not come with lines or stakes.
Tarp Poles: LYGZTing from Amazon, one of the very few that is somewhat light and has not so super long segments.
Little table: iBaingo Titanium Grill Grate, I have it covered with aluminum foil and use it as a table for cooking or the oven
Oven: Lixada Titanium wood stove, I use it for heat. I stopped cooking over a fire because of the sut on the pot. For cooking I use a small gas canister stove.
Chair: Trekology Yizi Go, great value and I can totally relax in it. I weigh 85 kg and it feels very stable.
Sleeping mat: Big Agnes Rapide SL LW, a little heavier, but very, very comfortable and warm
Sleeping bag: Sea to Summit Spark 2, super light and warm, but not much under freezing point

Great video! I did a similar route but in reverse two years ago. If, when, you come back, try Cape Sata in Kagoshima to Cape Soya in Hokkaido via Shikoku and the Shimanami Kaido, around 2,600 km. I did it last summer.

So close to kamikochi but didn't go? I hope you will return. Hitching a ride or taking transit to avoid scary tunnels is okay! Good video.

I would have needed 1 more day to get there around Norikura and another day to get back on root. 2 days I unfortunately didn't have.

Scary tunnel indeed! I would like to do a similar trip. How much was it to bring a bike on the KLM flight?

KLM charged 100€ for each direction so 200€ Total.

Where do you keep your bike boxes?

@benjamincory7108 10 месяцев назад
I ditched the original box in Osaka and got a used one from a bike shop in Tokyo.

Die you "preordered" the Box or just asked arround? I guess you need some protection stuff too? @@benjamincory7108

How did you dispose the bike box? Just leave it in parking or hotel take care of it?

What app did you use for route planning and finding campsites?
@benjamincory7108
@benjamincory7108 10 месяцев назад
For the route planning I used komoot and then switched to Google maps to look for campsites within the radius of how far I wanted to go that day. In the mountains there were some but not many choices and 1or 2 routes were dictated by the location of the campsite.
