Have you biked the Katy Trail? If yes, what was your experience with it? I'd love to hear about your trips on the Katy Trail:)

Ran it September 2020. 3 day 10 hours Clinton to Machens. Rain, stray dogs, great scenery and amazing people. Got the FKT at the time. Oh and no one in St Charles has ever heard of Machens 😆 I am attempting the self supported FKT on the C& O canal towpath starting June 3rd (2022) and have watched all your videos on that trail . They are great in helping me prepare. 😀🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

I love watching things like this, because I am an avid cyclist, and I like to go just about everywhere on or off road. The Katy Trail is definitely on my bucket list.

I went EB non stop some years ago, and then returned WB at a leisurly 3 day pace, in order to look at everything. I'm a train guy with train roots stretching back 130 years. I have to say that I've never been so entertained on a rail trail. Please take time to read the signage.. its highly relevant and accurate, and yes everyone should do this! Thanks for posting..

I traveled the KATY, for a short distance years ago and spotted wild turkeys and several deer. The experience was wonderful. Thanks for the video.

You're right, everyone should ride the Katy. My favorite memory of almost any bike ride, was riding into Boonville on a sultry Sunday evening, and upon hearing music, wandering off the trail to discover a bluegrass band playing right in the middle of the main street! I joined in, and then bought their CD, and continued on the next town.

I’ve ridden the trail all the way through on two occasions. Once from St. Charles headed west and once from Clinton headed east. Both times were amazing. Now that I’m older and have kids, I cannot wait until they’re old enough to ride the trail with me.

We rode it last year with pork belly ventures’ double cross ride. Highly recommend the ride and pork belly ventures. Did it in July and with all the shade it only felt hot on a few short sections. Nice towns to stay in and great places to eat, and drink, along the way.

This is awesome. I just happened to stumble upon the c&o canal on Google maps (because I'm a nerd and look at maps for fun). Never heard of it before today. Came to RU-vid and found your videos. Then low and behold after clicking on your channel your newest video is my local home state trail! I live in mid Missouri and have enjoyed the Katy Trail my whole life. Nice to see you got to enjoy it as well. My favorite spots as a kid were the bluff caves just south of Rocheport, and the mcbaine river bottoms. The largest oak tree in Missouri is just a mile or so off the trail near eagle bluffs conservation area. I visit that area a lot. The old tree is slowly dying out now so I want to experience it as much as possible in its last decades of life.

Side note, the grain elevator you showed at about 4 minutes into the video is one I know well. I'm sure you've heard of geocaching, and me and my grandpa had a cache at that elevator for many years before it was deemed unacceptable to have caches there for some reason. We placed many between Rocheport and Booneville

Looking to attempt this in November. The eastern terminus isn't far from where I live. Btw, the station and the town are pronounced "MOCK-ens," even though it's spelled Machens.

Thanks for the video. I love riding my bike and I just found out about this trail. I think I can complete the entire trail in about 2.5 days. Is there any service available to bring me back to the starting point once I complete the ride? The road looks like it is gravel......have you seen any recumbent bikes on the trail?
@NobleInventionBikeTouring
@NobleInventionBikeTouring 3 года назад
Katy Bike Rental and Bike Stop Cafe both offer shuttling the length of the trail. It is a packed gravel surface and well-ridden; yes recumbents are fine on the trail. So glad you found the video helpful!
@1LeggedAdventures
@1LeggedAdventures 3 года назад
how is the trail surface? my handcycle cannot accommodate very wide tires. could street tires navigate this? some sections look like pretty loose dirt.
@NobleInventionBikeTouring
@NobleInventionBikeTouring 3 года назад
It's a fairly packed crushed gravel for a rail trail. The section from Clinton to Booneville is sometimes a bit less packed and has more up and down elevation. From Rocheport to St Charles is more worn-in. After significant flooding you will also find the section between McBaine Trailhead and Jefferson City can be very sandy and potentially loose. In dry conditions most years, I would say the Katy is ok for road tires if you are ok with the bumps, but I would also suggest trying out a few sections in advance of a long trip if that is possible. I hope that helps?

So, taking a full-suspension 29er to Katy. I have two sets of wheels: Off-road 2" knobbies AND Maxxis Torch 2" urban-tread tires. Which is best? Thanks!
@NobleInventionBikeTouring
@NobleInventionBikeTouring 3 года назад
I'd go with the Maxxis, are you running them tubeless? Also, lock that suspension OUT:)
@zbillster
@zbillster 3 года назад
@@NobleInventionBikeTouring I'm running tubes (tubeless was a pain maintenance-wise). I'll bring both. The knobbies give a nice "float" over crushed rock, especially if there are deep spots. Full-suspension = less painful bum and hands = I can ride longer. :)
