I rode the 161km BVRT from Yarraman to Wulkuraka - Australia's longest recreational rail trail.
I did this over 1.5 days and it took me 9.5hrs to ride, with a one-night stealth camp at Esk.
This was simply an amazing experience and I highly recommend it. This video will give you the information you need to know if you're thinking about doing it.

There’s a company based here in ipswich that will take you and your bike up to yarraman in a small bus. Think it’s a great service. I have recently started to get back into cycling after 20+ years of not being on a pushy and riding the Bvrt is on my bucket list.

Hi John, nice video and great show case of the trail. Like others have mentioned yes you need to get the weight off your back and onto the bike. I don’t carry anything on my back not even a camelback. There are heaps of options for bike packing bags out there. Also I only ever carry two water bottles so about 1.5 litres on a trail ride like this because you have a town every 20 to 30km so it’s easy to top up. Also there are actual camping spots along the way. Yarraman weir is beautiful, linville, Toogoolawah etc. You should also check out the stock route from Yarraman to Nanango it’s excellent. Anyway all the best with your next rail trail adventure and happy cycling.
@jelbuilderfilms

Thanks for the good advice. Yeah, I won't be doing the backpack gig again, but I do enjoy doing things the hard way first time around. Also, I'm a hiker, so I've not really really got the bike setup for this type of long term riding but was a good challenge to just up and ride. I'll check out that stock route... although I think my next run will be the Kilkivan to Wulkuraka length which incorporates that route I believe. Cheers.
@Jamie.S.
@Jamie.S. Год назад
Yep, absolutely the stock route forms part of the link between the KKRT and the BVRT so you’ll get to do it then. Just something to be aware of is that if it’s been raining you can get some small sections of sticky peanut butter mud on the stock route so it may take a little bit longer than you expect.
@jelbuilderfilms
@jelbuilderfilms Год назад
Peanut butter... Lol. I think I'm waiting for spring to roll around... So I can get challenged by magpies also🙌

Hey John, Fantastic Vid Mate, Music Bed is perfect, I lived at saddliers crossing form 83 to 93, we used to hear the trains and railmotors heading up the Esk line and hitting the steel bridge at wulkuraka, they used to stop at Thomas Street station, only a stones through form our house. There is a heap of old gold workings up that line as well, around Gregors Creek, near the Yimbun Tunnel. By the way, that was named after Andrew Gregor, he was gruesomely murdered by Native people at what became Caboolture in 1846, the creek was maned after him. His "Housekeeper" was murdered too, She didn't seem to get a creek named after her. - T-Rocks 😎

Yeah! You did it! Getting more weight off your back and onto the bike would save your butt a bit too. I think I'd be carrying very minimal food and definitely not a can of spaghetti as there are many grocery shops along the way to get supplies. There is a bus company that can transport you and your bike to Yaraman and there are limited train services from Wulkuraka train station. Otherwise it's not that far to ride to Ipswich Train Station. Great video by the way.
@jelbuilderfilms
@jelbuilderfilms Год назад
Yeah.... finally! Def looking to minimise my carrying for next time. Already got a much lighter 1 man tent. Next time I'll be starting at Wulkuraka and going to Yarraman and returning.

@@jelbuilderfilms I'd like to get the train to Gympie, ride to Kilkivan, do the Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail then link up with BVRT and finish at Ipswich. I like the idea of using the train to get to / from the start/ finish of the rail Trail. There's also lots of little side trips you can do or areas of forest trails and roads to explore. When they finish the Boyne and Bernett Rail Trail it will be possible to ride from Gladstone to Ipswich mostly on Rail Trails! One day, when I've got nothing else to do!!!

Love your vid about the BVRT! I'll admit I'm a really inexperienced rider, only having started riding a bike last year. I have been enjoying it so much though. I'd like to ask if you think the Wulkuraka - Fernvale - Lowood sections are okay for beginners like me? Thanks!
@jelbuilderfilms
@jelbuilderfilms Год назад
Thanks so much. Yes, I would recommend just starting at Wulkuraka and ride to Fernwood and then Lowood if you have enough energy, then ride back.... Then you'll have an idea of what it's like to ride. You can always come back to do a bigger distance another time. The sections from Yarraman are more beautiful in my opinion but further to drive to start from... So up to you. Either way, any part of the BVRT is wonderful, you'll love it if you're interested in some significant history here.

Thanks - I went from Yarraman to Blackbutt and incline is no problem going that direction in my opinion.... its the best direction to go. Hope you enjoy the ride!

I've got a 500w ebike (720wh battery) and can get from wulkuraka to moore in around 6 hours (around 115km roughly off a single charge) due to the mild grade. I'll charge at Moore overnight and then the next day the incline up the range to blackbutt will basically drain the battery and it's only about 30-40km. Going in the other direction will be a walk in the park.
