Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

The one absolute thing Maher hit on the head that I agree with is cops, good or bad, always protect their own and that's where the distrust comes from. People have their rights violated every day in this country and they feel powerless. Even when a good cop with a conscience (Joe Crystal for example) reports the wrong doing of a bad cop the good cop is labeled a "rat", gets harrassed by his fellow officers and is run out of the department. Before anything changes cops need to start policing themselves better and holding themselves to a higher standard. They're supposed to be the professionals here.

I agree with him when he says "the police department cannot be revenge for high school"...the government should pay police officers more and increase testing/training so that less idiots get into positions of authority. I knew someone in high school that was schizophrenic, threatened to kill people, claimed to see angels etc, and today he's a police officer for one of the major departments in our city. The system has to improve so that we don't let morons into positions of authority - but I'll actually take it a step further....to be honest I don't think the system will ever work, because groups like black lives matter hold onto anger from over 150 years ago and don't allow us to create an unbiased system where race isn't an issue. We've had enough time as a country - the idea that different races and cultures can live together in peace is nonsense, black lives matter is basically the antithesis of the kkk, which like Maher says, isn't okay but does make sense - when you have a hate group associated with one race, you're going to get another hate group associated with another race.
@sdwhitesox8039
@sdwhitesox8039 7 лет назад
The ridiculous part is that they target white police officers that they don't even know, instead of actually targeting members of the KKK or the individual officers who actually killed the person, which creates a race war.

Did you see the first time BIll was on? Colbert trivialised a lot of points he was making with jokes and also interrupted him a lot. I get the feeling in this interview that Colbert was aware of that and was pulling back a lot in this interview to allow Maher more space. I think Colbert had a lot of responses whizzing around in his mind...but didn't voice them. I admire him for that and Maher was able to put his views across more completely here. Just my humble opinion.

@nonmagicmike723
@nonmagicmike723 6 лет назад
It's not the truth, it just *rings* true, because he talks in a solemn way and all. That's just Bill's schtick. But once you dissect it, his arguments have a lot of holes. First of all, no one should "understand" killing random cops. If Bill wanted to advocate vigilantism, then at least kill the cops you think got away with murder, not just random cops, that's just stupid. Second, there have two major studies done on the police killing unarmed arrestees. Both showed cops were no more likely to kill a black person than a white who resists arrest and get violent. Actually, they were slightly more likely to kill the white dude. Not only that, but the black cops are more likely to shoot black suspects than white cops are. Also, how would you expect a crowd to react to talks of shooting cops and death and all? Yes, those are sad and depressing subjects, so they'll remain silent. Doesn't make what he said true.
@leosonbentley2770
@leosonbentley2770 5 лет назад
@@nonmagicmike723 First of all. Bill doesn't say that we should "understand" the killing of police nor does he advocate for "vigilantiasm". He simply said that when you kill unnamed people, you shouldn't be surprise when people strike back. He was speaking from his point of view and not trying to make the killing of police something we all should understand. Secondly, what studies have shown that police doesn't kill more black people than white people?? If that was the case, black lives matter wouldn't exist nor would white people be quiet about it. And the whole point of police killing unarmed back people isn't bcuase they are necessarily resisting arrest, but about even when they cooperate, they still get shot and killed.
@danp1471
@danp1471 4 года назад
Leoson Bentley well I don't know what studies he's mentioning specifically, but too be fair he didn't say police kills less blacks than whites. He just said they are no more likely to kill a black person than a white when the suspect gets violent & resists arrest. Why does black life matters exist? Hmm let's see maybe because the media jumps on any story & runs with it before all the facts come out. If they know it will cause outrage that means more viewers. If it causes a protest all the better because that will give them something solid they can continue to report on. A perfect example was that whole hands up don't shoot. They took the word of the suspects friend over actually talking to the police to see if they can get the footage of the situation. The guy got into a struggle with an officer & went for his gun. The footage may not be the best but it made it clear it wasn't some innocent kid that was following the officers orders & still got shot. I'm not saying situations like that can't or haven't happened, but most of the stories they show on the news gets framed the way they want it. Since people are too lazy to look into the context of the situation & what actually happened. They see a 30 second clip with an officer who appears to cross the line & the comments & shares start flying. If you want to actually look into police encounters to see why the did what they did I recommend checking out the donut operators channel. He breaks down every police shooting that makes the news & some that dont. Also ASP, that channel is more about self protection, but you'll get a better idea of what the cops have to go through while making split life & death decisions. You'll see about that poor unarmed kid who was shot in his grandma's backyard. I'm sure you know that story from the news. They just knew it would be a headline & ran with it. Disregarding that the kid was fleeing from police so they had no idea that the fence he hopped led to his grandma's house. It's hard to see from the badge cam but when you slow it down you can clearly see the kid pull something out & get into a shooting stance. The officers had every right to assume it was a gun. After the shooting you can hear the two officers talking & it's pretty clear they really thought he had a gun. I'm not saying there aren't bad cops out there, just that the news needs to do a way better job reporting it. They have without a doubt made matters worse when they just run with a story like that.

@@leosonbentley2770 Black Lives Matters exist, because the white liberal oligarchs that control the movie, music, fashion, porn, late night talk shows, social media companies/silicon valley etc. ran out of CA, D.C, NY, Washington need to push narratives that victimize blacks for votes in order to win elections to further push their own agenda and sell themselves as a solution. It also pays quite well with the views that it generates so of course it's prioritized over other topics even if it means making the "story" into something it's not. Wealthy white liberals just use blacks for votes and money. Malcolm X said the same thing. Google it A lot of the individuals that fueled the movement also were resisting arrest. The guy selling cigarettes in NY. The unarmed teen that had just robbed a store, strangled the clerk, and then charged a cop that already had his gun drawn. The teen was also well over 6 foot and 225+ lbs. Trayvon that caused so much fuss got in his house and called his friend to explicitly tell him that he was going back outside to fight Zimmerman. He shouldn't have died, but how do justify intentionally going out of your way to fight a security guard that's trying to do their job when you know they're also armed? While he was a teen, I think Trayvon was also 6 foot so saying a cop killed a "kid" doesn't really hold a lot of weight. Blacks also have a tendency to claim something was done because of the individual's skin color even when it's not due to the past and their own paranoia. It's like the girl that gets cheated on and then has to have the password to every guy's phone that she dates afterwards The movement was more about unarmed individuals than necessarily "innocent" ones. You also make shit money to put your life on the line for people that you don't know. As someone that is related to a cop that now has PTSD from from an altercation that put him in the hospital in which an "unarmed" individual attempted to grab his gun from him, I don't blame cops for being arguably overly jumpy or paranoid. I've spoke to a cop that almost shot a child out of reaction walking around a corner due to the child pointing a toy gun at them, the child not immediately dropping it, and the cop not knowing that it was fake. Are you putting your life on the line everyday for $50,000 a year, because I doubt it? None of this argument acknowledges why these perceptions of blacks by police exist to begin with. Please explain why 54% of homicide offenders are black and 43% are white despite blacks only making up around ~20% of the population and whites making up ~%60 percent. This means a black person is 3-4 times more likely to kill someone. When cops are the ones that have to deal with these individuals, you don't think they're conscious of this? ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2017/crime-in-the-u.s.-2017/topic-pages/expanded-homicide

Maher could easily live a life of privilege insulated from the unpleasantness the rest of us have to face every day. After all that's what most other rich celebrities do and it doesn't seem to cost them anything, or affect their credibility. He could stay silent, not rock the boat, make token gestures to ease his conscience, but he doesn't. I have to respect that. As much as I disagree with him on certain things I respect that he obviously still cares enough to speak up.

I would disagree. The man is incredibly intellectually dishonest. He subscribes to honesty only until it doesn't work out in his way. Kind of like Trump. If you noticed on his shows, he has a disgusting tendency to quickly cut off people who're making more sense than him. I've seen enough episodes of him being outwitted and then proceeding to pander to his audience for half-witted laughter. Take this one episode with Dinesh D'Souza for example. He brought out D'Souza and decided to blame him for having a part in him getting fired off his show for his 9/11 comments. When D'Souza corrected him and declared that Bill's "coward" comments got him fired, Bill went on to do what he always does best - avoid actual discourse by pulling out the "comedy card". He's been doing this longer than either Jon or Stephen, and yet no one gives a crap about him. Why's that surprising?
@MikhailKalashnikovMiG
@MikhailKalashnikovMiG 7 лет назад
Kineridge I wasn't talking about D'Souza's disposition; I was talking about Bill's. Making sarcastic remarks after being called out on his own mistakes was just downright shameful. Being the host, trying to turn the audience against the guest is a tad bit shameful

I don't think it is all in anyone's head. There are enough commenters here remarking about Colbert's way toned down critiques on all areas of society he used to skewer on Colbert Report -- that where there's smoke, there must be some fire. Others point out Colbert can't be as free in expressing himself given this is now a huge CBS Entertainment show, and as such, he has many people to please, including CBS brass and sponsors. Bill doesn't have to censor himself - or rather, he COULD, but he's not an equivocating talking head like almost everyone in TV News at every network- and he chooses to not censor his honest thoughts. ... This in turn makes Colbert a little uncomfortable because he can't go mano a mano in an equally free way. He's filtering himself now in a a hundred ways. I'm not blaming him, mind you, it's a huge responsibility on Colbert's head. Nevertheless, it appears to me that, based on both that prior appearance and on this recent appearance that Maher has lost some respect for Colbert- keenly aware Colbert is doing some of this equivocating because of the demands on him to be "fair & balanced" so to speak for mainstream audiences, and keep sponsors happy. They are both exceedingly bright & observant. But Bill Maher remains the consistent Bill Maher of the past 25 years. Colbert is the inconsistent one now. He won't allow himself to be as outspoken as he was on The Report. That's kind of sad. An economic reality. But still sad nonetheless. Fallon's a light-weight, though a funny one. Kimmel's equally bright, but likes to keep things entertaining, so even though he CAN do a serious interview, he's more likely than not to wisecrack throughout it. FInally, my own thought: I was very curious how Colbert was going to be on his new show... Afterall, he's going up against two other funny hosts of late night TV. .... He's definitely softer now. I do like that he has onto his show more culturally important guests than just the usual fare. In that way he has distinguished himself.

It's not the truth. The two main studies done on police shootings show there's no bias on black men. Also, how would he know that cops go in as revenge for high school? That's just his opinion, not truth. And the whole "I understand you killing random cops" is dumb, if you want to go vigilante and exact revenge on those you think got away with murder, then kill the very cops who did it, not just random cops. Also, if any culture needs urgent change, it's anti-authority black culture. Bill has a way of saying things that's true-sounding, but not necessarily true. A lot of things can ring true when said in a certain tone, or you get edgy about them. Don't be so imperssionable.

All became 'honourary deputies' and had a spot in the force if they chose to seek police work after high school except for one kid. When they asked him why he wanted to be in the police force, he answered 'I want to have power over people.' He didn't say it as a joke either. I agree with Bill Maher 100% on this one! I don't agree with his views on Muslims, Israel, and the Middle East at all, but he definitely took off his blinders when it comes to all these police shootings. Everybody seems to want to change the subject. Police killings of unarmed people in America is a SERIOUS problem and we should stay on topic.

I totally agree. Has anyone bothered to analyze how the shootings of young black men is affecting them? When these incidents of police violence result in DAs not prosecuting, or police being found not guilty, I think it sends the message that the police can get away with these crimes. Everyone should be angry at that. What if we were to discover these shootings are radicalizing a large number of young black guys for an entire generation? How will the police feel if they have to deal with multiple shootings like this every week nationwide? What response will they be willing to make that will reassure the public that this behavior will stop immediately? Standing before the cameras and apologizing and promising to retrain cops and do better probably won't do it.

"When these incidents of police violence result in DAs not prosecuting, or police being found not guilty, I think it sends the message that the police can get away with these crimes. Everyone should be angry at that." Did the thought ever occur to you that some of those officers were rightfully found not guilty? That there was more to the situation that you didn't want to know? Y'know it would make your cause somewhat more legitimate if you lot didn't lie consistantly about police wrong doings. Does "hands up don't shoot" ring a bell? Did the thought also ever occur to you why African Americans frequently encounter the police as they do? It isn't because of some evil racist conspiracy by the police, its because African-Americans disproportionately commit more crimes. BTw you've asked "Has anyone bothered to analyze how the shootings of young black men is affecting them ", how about asking how black on black killings is affecting them? Considering its way higher than police killings.
@JamesHarris-
@JamesHarris- 7 лет назад
Did I write all police are guilty? No you just read that into my post. I suppose Freddie Gray broke his own neck, and Walter Scott shot himself in the back. What about the hundreds of other similar incidents where cops at least overreach their authority? Do you see nothing wrong with the behavior of these cops or do you give them all a pass?

.... I doubt that the police forces around America are playing Chris Rock videos when they are training their cops. The police have to be trained differently and not just shoot or beat up as the first option when a person has their hand up or is just laying on the ground like they did with Rodney King, Eric Garner, and Alton Sterling. Yes all the examples I just gave refused to cooperate. But, that does NOT justify the police killing 2 of the examples and almost killing Rodney. They even had to pay Rodney a ton of money because they were wrong in their actions. Now imagine what black people go through on an every day basis that is NOT recorded. Sometimes the people with the power refuse to see the injustice they and their people do because they figure that they can get away with it. So instead the blame is turned around back to black people or black celebrities. People that live in glass houses............

Have to agree with Bill. And yes...better screening for people who want to enter training in the criminal justice areas, especially for policemen (women) who carry a badge and a gun. Personality, mental health, aptitude and history is important to include in seeking police force. Persistent training in negotiations, gun handling, and so on...for everyone's protection .
