at 10:15 you can tell Steven Colbert sits there in silence not because he's awed by Jon Stewart's commentary but because he's too stupid to formulate an intelligible response.

The tension is because Stephen likely disagrees with this idea that we should let bigots and disinformants and hate-mongers have as much platform as they want for the sake of “debate.” And Stephen is right. And Jon is wrong. Responsibility exists in the world, and no one is obligated to platform violent and terrible ideas for the sake of “fairness.” Basic values have to exist, and one of our values is that ALL people have a right to security and dignity. Which means that a neo-fascist does not have a “right” to a microphone if they are going to use that “right” to implicitly or directly attack the rights of others.

John Stewart is a g. He has always kept it real. He is a genius. He showed the difference in who can talk. He joked. And he knew what he was doing. I love that he stated that he doesn’t necessarily agree with everything but agrees that a person should not be penalized for their opinion.

Each of us has the opportunity to speak like Jon Stewart (though, in all likelihood, not as well), and to choose "not to bury the nasty stuff" away in some corner. Of course, in order to speak like Jon, one needs to be well informed and current regarding the pressing issues of the day, and this takes some attention to detail, and requires effort. Most of all, we need to be civil to those who disagree with us, so that we can hear them through, and judge what it is they say, and not who they are solely based on what they say. Kudos to Colbert and Stewart for raising the issues that are raised here.

Not Colbert's bag, hard to sell a shit movie or album off nuance and genuine discussion. We should all be thankful Stewart came back and is injecting maturity into The Late Show in small doses.

Colbert was pretty much silent. He was not at the level of depth that Jon was. I think it was a terrible interview by Colbert. It was a fantastic monologue by Stewart.

yeah Stephen always lets the truly insightful ones talk freely without any speed pressures or random jokes. But it takes time to know someone on that level, and they go with their speed routine as a default with most their guests. One of the reasons why he at times interrupts the guest or only takes a one or two line answer to the questions instead of further explanation is to speed up the segment so as to get more things to talk about. But many people don't see Stephen from this perspective, they find it rude and such.

If you carefully watch the clip again, Stephen actually presses Jon to give an answer even after long non-answers until Jon finally answers him. Jon even realizes this means there's disagreement.

As pointed out at the end by stephen himself... he can't reveal his personal feelings about the issue because it's too dangerous and may get him canceled.

To actually bring people to your side, you have to be willing to understand the nuances of their criticisms and statements, then correct the points where they went astray. I think the real problem lies in the fact that most people don't actually know how to reasonably defend their own positions on either side, because they are dictated by society, rather then determined and learned for ones self. The more you push anything, no matter how evil it seems into a corner and forbid it, you've instantly given it credibility it never deserved. It's essentially the same as saying 'we don't have a legitimate answer to your question, so your no longer allowed to ask it.'

He has another show now, by the way! Not sure if you’re able to watch but it’s on Apple TV+ called “The Problem with John Stewart”. Doesn’t play anywhere near as regularly as The Daily show, unfortunately. Still pretty good though.

I often imagine them doing a kind of retirement show together after their kids are grown and flown where they just discuss and debate and make each other crack up laughing over whatever they find to disagree about.

At what point do you say, look, you are not discussing in good faith, you enjoy the controversy and seem to be enjoying the new fanbase you have gotten from attacking transgender people, and i no longer view an honest conversation possible. Do we extend this for trump supporters? I generally am good with writing some people off as lost, it saves wasting a lot of time on someone who does not want an honest conversation. its harsh, but its realistic.

Regressing to the mean sadly. Natural law is conflict and war. Peaceful coexistence is an agonizing, exhausting and ultimately futile struggle against our very nature. How do we convince people in this day and age to willingly and knowingly take up arms in a losing battle for the sake of only temporary escape? Its a tough sell.

Here Jon used the word both for it's definition--to spread or grow--as well as to evoke a metaphor. That metaphor being: that misinformation is akin to cancer in it how dangerous it is. I'm explaining this because I believe it's important to fully understand how loaded a word may be before using it. I think Jon is the type of comic who is quite purposeful in the words he chooses to use. Plus, using cancer as a metaphor is rather serious, and I think ought to be used sparingly, rather than "using [it] for days." -From a writer (who is 6 months in remission ;) )

Jon has much more control over his show, that he created, and he's in a position to not have to worry about advertisers, or studio executives and censors, or whether or not one of his guests ever agrees to return after he eviscerates them on camera. Steven, on the other hand, has an obligation to the legacy of the show's brand, the network, the studio, the advertisers, the writers, the guests, and all of the other people who make the show happen every night. The Late Show is a part of the state's tourism. Literally, hundreds of people's livelihoods depend on that show. It's not even a fair comparison. Is it not enough that Colbert gives Jon as much airtime as he possibly can, to talk about practically anything he wants, while promoting and supporting nearly every move he makes? He gives him network exposure to promote a show on a separate paid subscription network, all the time. He gives him a huge space to voice and share his message any time he wants. Do you honestly think he's not helping to promote and encourage discussion of important topics? Seriously? Did you even notice how quiet that audience was while Jon shared some wisdom on a deeply serious subject, on a nationally broadcast platform? WTF else do you expect the man to do?🤨

I thought that was great. Everyone praises Jon for his wit and humor, deservedly so. But Stephen's comedic genius is underrated. I'm not always a fan of his monologues, but there's no denying how quick and sharp he is in interviews. That's why it's always magic when they come together.
