Some time ago, Dave Houle posted a Brown County Jamboree show featuring Bill Monroe, from April 13, 1958. It's on RU-vid at:
• Bill Monroe 1958-04-13...
It turned out that that was only the EVENING show. With a good deal of help from former Blue Grass Boy Tom Ewing, I obtained a cassette copy that included the entire AFTERNOON show from the same day, and that's what I've now digitized and shared here on RU-vid as well. Both shows included a few of the same numbers, like "Panhandle Country," which the group had recorded for Decca only a week before this live show; and two gospel songs: "I've Found a Hiding Place" and "Lord, Build Me a Cabin in Glory."
Both shows that day featured Bill Monroe (mandolin); Edd Mayfield (guitar); Kenny Baker (fiddle); and Bob Johnson (banjo). No bass player! There were also peformances that day by Stonewall Jackson and Jimmy Newman, as well as by the Logston Sisters (a local duo who made fairly regular appearances at the Brown County Jamboree.
These shows were originally recorded on reel-to-reel tape by Monroe's friend Marvin Hedrick, whose large collection of recorded bluegrass and country music is now preserved digitally at Middle Tennessee State University. Explore the collection at: cdm15838.contentdm.oclc.org/d...
Unfortunately, the audio quality for the afternoon show -- certainly on the "cassette copy of a cassette" that was in Ewing's possession -- is poor, much inferior to the quality of the evening show. This was noted by Matteo Ringressi, who worked with an earlier generation of the taped show, and who speculated that it "must have been a real windy day, as you can tell by the fidelity." But the show was most likely held inside the Brown County Jamboree barn, so wind should not have been a factor. While Ringressi thought the recording was incomplete, the tape provided to me had the entire afternoon show on it, and that's what is presented here.
Still, while Monroe's own voice and vocals are reasonably strong, the others who were captured on tape that day (including Darvin Byrd, who booked some shows for Bill Monroe in those days, and who sings two numbers on this show) are sometimes hard to hear. Bad audio particularly marred the several comedy segments featuring Kenny Baker as "Sparkplug." I did a good deal of audio editing in an attempt to clean, "de-noise," and boost those segments, but it seems clear that Baker was often too far from the microphone used by Hedrick, so parts are nearly unintelligible. Sorry about that! Yet, as Matteo also noted, the presence of Edd Mayfield singing and playing guitar is "worth the price of admission alone!" Edd Mayfield died just months after this show...
Here one can also hear Monroe mentioning "Spurs" on this tape; that would be Denzel "Silver Spurs" Ragsdale, who often emceed Jamboree shows, and who frequently rang the very loud bell hung near the stage to add excitement for the audience (though some performers found it annoying)...
