It's literally the plot of a game (Dark Souls clone) "The Surge" Climate change is really bad in the not so distant future, a plan to spread chemicals to help repair the atmosphere via rockets is in the works. Might work, might not, it gets delayed, expensive, but it's something, little silver of hope. THEN, secretly, a bunch of billionaires and tech CEOs decide, "Ehh, let's just sabotage that plan and make a new one that's more cost-effective and really only benefits us at the top %". What do they do? Replace the climate change (maybe) fixing chemicals in the rocket, with experimental AI parasitic nanomachines, that kill about 99% of all human AND animal AND plant life on the planet. Leaving only the billionaires and other global leaders as the only survivors, potentially as immortal half-machine monsters Now that isn't the literal plot of the game, but it's what the billionaires and elites in the game just decided to do on a whim, all on their own. Thank God that in that setting, the experimental nanomachines gain sentience and ruin the billionaires plans. That's probably going on in real life right now, but there ain't gonna be any magic nanomachines trying to save us like in the game. And even in that game, the nanomachines weren't trying to stop the billionaires, they just happened to do so when they woke up.

He needs to fix all the computers with screwed up updates and hard drives full of these updates that people DELIBERATELY switched off to get rid of them.

Apple does the same shit by the way. $1000 iphone stopped working after it installed a software update that I had clicked no on every day for months. Planned obsolescence.
