Legend has it that Jeff Beck was amazed by Bolin’s guitar on this album and completely changed how he approached the instrument after that.

Yes it's a precursor to Blow by Blow, even though Jeff plays differently, but the overall mood is very much like Blow by Blow

This was one of the big fusion albums after the first Mahavishnu lineup broke up - former members drummer Cobham and Jan Hammer on minimoog, with Leland Sklar on bass and Tommy Bolin on guitar.

Let's not leave out Lee Sklar on bass... probably the most iconic bass groove of all time! I watched him talk about it and he said that he can't even play it in the studio because the moment he does it's the only thing anybody wants to jam to after that! It has a tendency to derail recording sessions.

This was a great album when it hit. Spectrum was an introduction album for many Cobham fans. Sadly there are not many Cobhan fans, most folks don't know him still. He is quietly known as The Drummers Drummer. Every tune on this LP starts with a Drum Solo. He does not quit and plays at 110% on many songs. His Best Album is Total Eclipse where he Totally Eclipses all other drummers. Must try: "Sea of Tranquility" from that album. Uses lots of Brass Instruments on a few of his Albums.. on his Cross Winds Album, he plays the drums like a Thunder Storm.

Billy Cobham/George Duke. Great band.

Massive Attack appropriated the groovy bass riff for their track 'Safe from Harm' some 20 years later. Shone new light on this magnificent fusion album.

My very first concert was John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchaestra (Billy was the drummer); this is mid 70s, Kate Wolman park in central park in NYC. Golden earring (radar love) was the opening act - they got BOOED off the stage with fireworks (July 4th) and then these guys came on. Billy was then, as on this album, unbelievable in his skills; and his fusion jazz sound carried ovee to these albums of his. BEST DRUMMER EVER.

Billy Cobham is one of my favorite drummers and is my favorite Jazz Fusion drummer. Lee Sklar's bass is nasty on this, and Jan Hammer killed on the synth and keys. You did a review of One Word from Mahavishnu Orchestra, where Billy kills it.

So glad my choice made it through to a reaction. Billy at this point was the finest drummer on the planet, bar none. Formerly with Miles Davis then Mahavishnu Orchestra, he tore this track up. Guitarist Tommy Bolin had just shown James Gang what a real guitarist was and was about to do the same with the purple helmuts. Jan Hammer was on keys and Sifa got it right, moog. He also was in Mahavishnu Orchestra and was under-rated by many. He moved into TV and did the music and soundtrack, Crockett's Theme, on Miami Vice. Last but not least, the legend that is Leland Sklar, beloved bassist. It's easier to list the artist he didn't play with than the ones he did, lol. Jeff Beck used this track for many years on his live sets. Billy plays drums and percussion. Great reaction guys.

If you look up Leland Sklar's channel on youtube (34. Billy Cobham / Stratus) you can see him playing along on his bass guitar.

billy is great,...and people have the hide to say Bonham is the greatest drummer at that time....and he is playing better at age 80 today...Jan Hammer on keys was musical director of the show ''miami vice'' This was a one take recording...or two at most...all tunes on album were recorded in one or two takes...The tracks were recorded live with no tricks after with edits...

Moog is pronounced like Vogue. Jan Hammer plays a Minimoog Model D and Fender Rhodes Piano.
